http://www.flickr.com/photos/p aigekparsons/3449685408/ I'll admit straight up that I'm not a huge Leonard Cohen fan. This isn't to say I don't like him, just that I'm not the one who picked out this show to see and all things considered I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have bought a ticket to see this by myself. My girlfriend however is a pretty big fan, and I'm never one to say no to someone who's supposed to be one of the best songwriters on the planet ever, so why not right? I know that Leonard [...]
> <515;8 A>D8O omewhere in 2007 some bands started getting a weird idea to perform classic albums in a start-to-finish track order as their entire show. This is both a good thing and a bad thing all at the same time. On the good side, it's always nice to see how well an album holds up to the test of time. You get to see some songs performed perhaps for the first time ever, since not every artist has always thought all the songs on an album to be worth doing in a [...]
(my lovely zenphotopress plugin is behaving badly, no image right now, will fix eventually?) I know, I super slacked the last few months, so here's the first show of 2009. I'm not seeing a ton of shows lately, but this is something worth getting out of the house to see, for sure. Jonathan Coulton speaks to the soul of every nerd, geek, and anyone that comes in contact with anyone who considers themselves to be part of either sort of person. That's not to say the music can only be enjoyed by nerds and [...]
I haven't posted anything in a while. The reasons aren't great but are many. I haven't had time. When I've had time I haven't thought about it. When I've had time and I've thought about it, I've been sorta sick. I haven't seen a lot of shows lately, so I haven't made any recordings. I'll get over it sooner or later and I'll be back out there and I won't bail on shows anymore or whatever. Until then, here's a selection of the best stuff of 2008 [...]

I'm not real sure I can review this, even as badly as I review things in general, and do this sort of show any justice. It was loud, but I'm sure anyone even slightly familiar with MBV will already realize that it was going to be loud. If you've only ever heard their recorded music, you might not necessarily get the impression that they're the loudest band on the planet (no lie, this has been measured!). Yes there are vocals, no you really can't hear them. Yes everything sounds noisy and distorted, [...]

It'd been a while since I'd seen an mc chris show, I guess because he's been on other people's tours and warped (and I have nooooo desire to go to festivals) or just playing in non SF venues or whatever, so it was nice to finally see an mc chris show again. I was there at the start of his touring career in Nashville a few years ago and it's really good to see at least some refinement in his performances. At the time I think he was trying for some sort of half rap, half comedy [...]

5 Years ago (almost exactly) I had basically no idea what I was getting into when I saw Mogwai for the first time. I went expecting something vaguely Sigur Ros like, with some occasional bits of loudness but not "noise as an instrument" sort of loud. I left the show with some semi-permanent hearing damage in one ear (I was kinda halfway pointed towards a stack fairly close to the stage) and it was the loudest thing I'd ever heard, ever. I never knew who My Bloody Valentine was and I'd never looked them up, [...]

For me, Beck is a sort of nostalgia I think. Lots of his songs were big with me at pretty good times in my life. When I got the email last week at 3PM saying there was going to be a Beck show at a really tiny venue that went on sale in less than 2 hours, I kinda freaked out. It's not often you get that sort of opportunity. I was lucky enough to get tickets, judging by the angry people on craigslist, sonicliving and other websites tons of good fans were [...]
I've got a couple of shows I keep meaning to post but I can't ever remember to do it before I get distracted. I was going to post the Liz Phair show from a few weeks ago, but I screwed that one up. (typical story with my recording lately I guess) I'm going to see like 5 shows in the next few weeks, hopefully a few of them will turn out nice. I have two requests in the meantime: #1: please comment on this post if you're reading (it's quick and [...]

Full circle! For the first time, I get to post an artist for the second time. Tilly and the Wall was the first band I posted here a couple years ago when I got the urge to make a blog just for the stuff I record. I missed their show earlier this year at the Rickshaw Stop because I'd seen the British Sea Power show the night before and I didn't feel like going out again the next night since it was Noise Pop and inevitably they pack so many bands on the bill that you're soooo [...]
Okay, I originally wrote up a big negative thing about the show, because I honestly didn't enjoy it a lot. I thought the band looked bored, it seemed like they were legitimately pained to play some of their older songs, despite only having played a single show at a tiny club in San Francisco before... and the show was rather short for a headliner. The first time I saw them, I chalked everything up to it being their first US tour. This time, I don't really know. Maybe they were just tired and [...]
Quick and dirty, more detailed review coming soon. Just wanted to get this up before bed. The Dolls are my 2nd favorite band in the world, second only to Tori. (sorry!). Their live shows are without comparison, and should not be missed unless you just hate going to awesome shows that are worth every penny. I promise there's no way you can leave one without saying "that was fucking awesome". I'm not joking at all. I think I've seen them 20something times, I hope to see them 20something [...]

Elbow is sometimes a difficult band to see. They write great songs, and Guy Garvey has a great voice, there's no doubt. But, their songs are often slow ballads and not necessarily the stuff you can rock out with. This makes for a difficult live show I think, trying to keep the average crowd enthusiastic when for the most part if you give anyone a chance to hear themselves talk, they'll take it as an opportunity to do so, even if the band is still on the stage and trying to perform. I was plagued at [...]

I'll be honest, I'm not that familiar with anything but the most popular songs by The Verve. However, my girlfriend Danielle (who is also the one who recorded this fine show) is a big fan. I'm not real sure why I never got into them back when they were super popular for the first time, but I just didn't. Maybe it was because when they got popular in the US, I'd moved on from rock to electronic music for a while, I'm not sure. I'm not even going to try to write anything [...]
This was my favorite show of 2007, without a doubt. There's really no description I can muster that does it any justice at all. Beirut's albums may be done primarily by Zach Condon on his own, but the live shows are chock full of other people. Where a lot of artists might employ backing tracks of some sorts, loops, or other gimmicks to make the album sound in a live setting, Beirut is a fully live and stage-packed show. I was completely blown away. It's like the band geeks [...]

Again, sorry for not posting stuff in even semi-frequent amounts. I had a lot of plans for this thing back when I decided to put it up, and other things just get in the way. I've been broke as a joke lately, I just started a second job and I'm really just not seeing a ton of shows. (not because I don't want to!) I've got a handful of stuff just hanging around though, and I'm going to try and get to most of it in the next month or so. I've got [...]

I saw British Sea Power on their first US Tour (at least in the South) back in 2004. It was a really fantastic couple of weeks where I got to see Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Dresden Dolls and Vienna Teng all in 8 days. (lots and lots of driving happened). I saw them at a tiny place, my former favorite now long gone venue, Echo Lounge in Atlanta. Usually when you see a band 4 years later, they've moved up and on to bigger less intimate sorts of joints. [...]
