Coming on the heels of their much lauded album, Who Needs Who , Minneapolis' Dark Dark Dark will be getting involved in the Record Store Day festivities with the release of a new EP, What I Needed , featuring three new songs. Recorded during the sessions of their latest album and in the aftermath of a relationship breakdown between band co-founders Marshall LaCount and Nona Marie Invie, the band felt these songs deserved their own place seperate of the full-length. Listen to [...]
Wavves released their new album, Afraid of Heights , today via Mom + Pop / Warner Bros. To celebrate the occassion, the band released a new video for "Demon To Lean On", directed by BLACK // DOCTOR (Chris Black and MISTERDOCTOR). The video sees a car getting towed to a junkyard with a boy sleeping inside it. The boy ends up getting pulled into a whole society of people who are making the junkyard their home. Cinematic, gloomy, emotional could all be appropriate in describing the latest song, "Someone Else", from Austin, TX trio Pure X . The song will appear on their forthcoming album, Crawling Up The Stairs , slated for release on May 14th via Acéphale . The rawness of this track cuts to the bone with every screech and crack of the voice. Listen below. MP3: Pure X - Someone Else [...]
As we discussed last month, Kurt Vile will be releasing his new album, Wakin on a Pretty Daze , on April 9th via Matador . You've heard the excellent somewhat title track "Wakin on a Pretty Day", now we get another cut titled "Never Run Away". As always with Vile, there is no flash or unexpected trajectory in the sound, just good 'ol rock and roll. You can find the download below along with the introductory video he did for the song. [...]

Mt. Rainier, WA folk artist Blake Cowan, known under the stage name Wickerbird , will be releasing his new EP, The Westering , tomorrow. The EP follow-up his solid debut album, The Crow Mother , released in the fall of last year. All of his songs have a spiritual or hymnal quality about them that bridges the gap between humanity and God. His music couldn't be a more perfect soundtrack for the winter that just won't seem to go away at the [...]
White boys got soul. Had a couple friends bring St. Paul and the Broken Bones to my attention while I was down at SXSW this year. Glad I followed up. You now reap the rewards. St. Paul and crew are from Birmingham, Alabama, and make some beautiful, southern soul music. Paul was raised on southern church music and actually groomed to be a preacher. Lucky for all of us, we now get to be his congregation. St. Paul and the Broken Bones perform " Broken Bones and [...]

Everybody is waiting for the release of Phoenix's fifth studio album, Bankrupt! , on April 23rd via Glassnote . We already heard the upbeat lead single "Entertainment" and now indie-rock legends Dinosaur Jr. decided to put their own little spin on the song with amazing results. Their version takes the song to the other end of the spectrum with slow burn and wailing guitar solo only Dinosaur Jr. can provide. Dare we say this is better than the original. Find it below along with [...]
Vampire Weekend are returning with their third LP and follow-up to 2010's Contra . The album, titled Modern Vampires of the City , will be out May 7th via XL. To get the press rolling, the band released a double a-side single for the tracks "Diane Young" and "Step". Both are solid tracks, but "Step" has been seeing more listens to this point. Listen to both below and you can pre-order the LP here .
We know a good thing when we hear it, and now Lily & Madeleine are the talk of Indianapolis. After one look and listen at this gorgeous video, you'll soon agree, and they'll likely be the talk of far beyond. It's not often that any artist, local or not, enjoys this type of rise from obscurity. Since the digital release of their EP the sister duo is already receiving critical acclaim, Death +Taxes asserts, “It’s not just that their songs are instantly compelling and arranged and produced with impeccable taste, but that they project a wizened soulfulness that’s [...]
Frequently, people approach me on the street just to ask, "What's Waylon's kid up to these days?" Of course, the subject of their inquiry is none other than the man fiercely determined to put the 'O' back in country, the one and only Shooter Jennings . Now, unless you've been living under a rock, it's no secret that just last week, ol' Shooter dropped the follow up to last year's Family Man , a little platter goes by the name The Other [...]
Quite a few years back, wanderlust and general distaste for responsibility found me traipsing through Iceland. I had a great time exploring the island nation, its rugged coastline, seemingly eternal darkness (winter in Iceland is not for the seasonally affected) and Reykjavík's too cool for words clubs (as long as one remembered not to show up before midnight). Years later, the thing I remember most about my Icelandic pilgrimage is an incident involving the Blue Lagoon , a flybussen full of German tourists and a rented Speedo . Now [...]
Before their show at Old National Centre, Portland's Blitzen Trapper stopped by the Do317 Lounge for a great PBR Session featuring a couple of our favorite tunes. We had a packed house that day for what turned out to be on of our best Lounge Sessions yet. View the full photo set here (Photos by Jeff DuPont)
It has been a slow burn for LA's DWNTWN, the synth-pop trio comprised of Jamie Leffler (lead vocals), Robert Cepeda (guitar, backup vocals, keyboard), and Jerrod Bettis (drums), and their EP The Red Room released last year. However, it looks as though they are beginning to pick up steam in 2013. A couple of weeks ago, we posted the video to the synth-heavy "Stood Me Up" , now the band is streaming the electro-disco cut "Dark Transition". Listen below. For those of you heading down to SXSW next [...]
On March 18th, Chaz Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi ) will be releasing a new 123 of new music via Jiaolong. The release will be under his Les Sins moniker. Both "Prelims" and "Grind" are solid that would be a nice backdrop to any party. Just another day of releasing great music for Mr. Bundick. Listen below.
Brooklyn's Conveyor released a new video for "Woolgatherer", the latest single from their self-titled album from last year. The visual, directed by Matthew Thompson, showcases the male physique with some contortion from the subject and some odd peeling of the skin. It works for the eclectic song. Watch below.
Caveman dropped another track from their forthcoming self-titled album to be released on April 2nd via Fat Possum . We hae already heard "In The City" , now listen to the morose "Over My Head". I hear a little bit of John Lennon in this one, which is never a bad thing. Listen below.
Growing up in a small town, you had to be pretty creative in finding things to do to pass time as a teenager. Many of those ideas involved blowing things up and your occassional tag utilizing roman candles or bottle rockets. So when we watched Futurebirds' video for "Virginia Slims", we couldn't help feel a slight hint of nostalgia to our youth. We can't get enough of this song and the clip makes us love it that much more. Their new album, Baba Yaga , [...]
Volume 3 from She & Him will be out on May 7th via Merge Records . "Never Wanted Your Love" is the first song taken from the new LP. It almost has a Partridge Family theme song vibe about it. Sort of indifferent to it at the moment, but you know what they say about first impressions. Listen below.
