Sorry for the lack of posts this week, it's been a bit too busy around here with non blog related things. Better late than never, or so the saying goes, so a bit late today, here's this week's 5 On A Friday for you. 1 : World Party - Is It Too Late ? Buy Best In Show 2 : Lindsey Buckingham - Not Too Late [...]

Austin, TX ,The Bellfuries started out as three piece roots rock trio, and like many of their predecessors before them, began to feel stylistically confined by the limitations of the genre music they were playing. Branching out to a more melodic pop sound was their obvious next step. Reworking their songwriting style and band lineup seems to have done the trick. The end result is Palmyra , a dozen songs that follow closely in the power pop tradition of bands like NRBQ , Rockpile with Nick Lowe [...]

I try not to repeat the themes here on 5 On A Friday but today's an exception. I originally posted this back in August of 2007 as ABBA-cadABBrA so the links are long since dead. That old post has been so popular as of late however I thought it deserved re-up for you all. Enjoy. Mamma Mia ! Why ABBA ? Why not ? 1 : ABBA - Dancing Queen Buy Arrival [...]
Click on the picture to get the full size cover art Back in March Sweden's racingpaperplanes put out a free digital single for their song In And Out Of Coma , an insanely catchy slice of alt country pop that has securely cemented itself as one of my favorite songs of the year. A week or so ago they released a new single for The Oars b/w How Did This Ocean Get So Vast . This time around they've chosen a [...]

A handful of my blurry photos from this past Sunday's Bag Of Songs Night at the M Room in Philadelphia with Upsincefriday , Beaten By Them , JP05 and Cedarwell . Big,big thanks to all of the bands for an excellent night of music. I'd attempt to write you a longer review but Jessica over at Popwreck(oning) has already done a superlative job, along with some much better photos [...]

I was never a huge Of Montreal fan, I liked a couple songs here and there, but the new one, Skeletal Lamping has me hooked. It is an amazing blend of 70's rock, soul and disco and current electronic dance sounds all melded together with an editing style that sounds like a combination of White Album era Beatles and Girl Talk . It's obvious all those nights of hosting live karaoke shows have seeped into their musical consciousness. Chock full of NSFW [...]

A few photos from this past Thursday night's Roomtone Cd Release Party @ Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia with Jukebox The Ghost , Roomtone , and The Future Tips . Jukebox The Ghost kicked it off to an excellent running start with their Ben Folds -esque blend of piano based pop. Roomtone was up next celebrating the release of their fine new cd Hits & Mrs . Alex Yaker took the stage with what is essentially an all star six piece backup band which included Catherine [...]

An amazing and diverse lineup coming up for you this Sunday August 31st at the M Room in Philadelphia. First up is the musical muse of Sheboygan Wisconsin's Erik Neave, Cedarwell, whose powerful, darkly intense acoustic based songs will have you mesmerized. If you like artists like Bon Iver , Fleet Foxes or Jose Gonzales you need to hear Cedarwell . Cedarwell - Home [...]

I took a lot of photos and pretty much they all tirned out like crap but here's few anyway from last night's joyous reunion show with Philadelphia's The Friggs at the Tritone on South Street. Part girl group, part sixties style garage rockers, they had the packed house dancing from the word go like they'd never been gone. The Friggs - Shake Buy Today Is Tomorrow's Yesterday

To quote the inimitable Led Zeppelin, Dancing days are here again, as the summer evenings grow... (Have you heard the rumor ? Hey Philadelphia music fans you'll want to be sure not to miss this week's Wednesday Night's FREE Concert In The Park at Rittenhouse Square with Gildon Works and Capitol Years . Gildon Works just released an amazing new CD called Artful Rifle and also turned in one of the best sets at this year's Philly Popped! Festival. Capitol Years are a long time Philly favorite and recently backed up Daniel Johnston on a number of his tour dates. Should be a fantastic night of music for a [...]

Some pictures from last Friday night's amazing show at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia. Greyhounds kicked off the night in true rock and roll style opening their set with a snippet of Bruce Springsteen's Darkness On The Edge of Town which they seamlessy segued into their first song of the night. Drink Up Buttercup were up next, delivering a set of the psychedelic tinged rock circus that has been garnering them numerous accolades as of late. They ended their set by doing their last [...]

My last post about the new DVD inspired some extended James Brown listening on my part so I thought I'd throw up a couple live tunes from the 1963 Live At The Apollo album for you all to listen to as well. Here's Night Train and the single mix of Think which has a bit more of the horns than on the album version. James Brown - Night Train James Brown - Think (single mix) [...]
If you're a James Brown fan, I highly recommend this new 3 dvd set that was released about a week ago. Two amazing performances from 1968. I mostly know James for his music, but the Live At Boston Garden show from April 1968, the Night after Martin Luther King was shot, shows just how much power James also weilds as a proponent of civil rights. The documentary disc really puts the show in its historical context. The third disc is James live from his now legendary run of live shows at the Apollo in Harlem in [...]

The Olympics are dominating most of the headlines the past few days, but yesterday also marks the kickoff of an annual event back here in the states. August 9 was the official start of this year's Elvis Week in Memphis which runs until the 17th and is comprised of a multitiude of daily events to commemorate Elvis Presley 's death in 1977. The pinnacle of the week is an all night candlelight vigil where thousands of devotees from around the world gather to file solemnly past the gravesite at Graceland . I [...]
