Well, old man Carnell is heading out the praire provinces this week, so it's just gonna be me and you for the next few days. So, despite the impending lack of content on obscure UK rock and Justin Timberlake's sex life, I'm sure we'll just have a swell time.... There's an odd scene that starts to congeal when you look back at the 90's alt-rock scene. It's made up of great, forward thinking bands that released hit singles only to see themselves quickly disappear from the commercial map. Tripping Daisy and The Flaming Lips are my two [...]
I'm a junky. I usually try and get a fix every night before I go to bed, again when I get up if I can. Most of the time I can get through the rest of the morning okay, but then at around 1pm...maybe 2, the itch sets in. First come the cold sweats, then the shakes, until, before I know it, the withdrawl is eating me alive. Sometimes it helps to manically tap along to what ever music I'm listening to...other times I know that if I don't get a plastic guitar in my hands and [...]

We're not gonna be seeing that smile much anymore. I'm not one to say "I Told You So", but....I Told You So. I knew TFD was getting huge numbers these days, but I didn't really expect people like Justin Timberlake to be reading it yet. But apparently he is, and he took the advice I gave him awhile back in October. He finally ditched Cameron Diaz. He really did it. Finally. Phew. And I thought 2007 was going to be an eventful year for me. Imagine how eventful its gonna be for a newly single Justin Timberlake. [...]

Some artists just seem to show up with a certain chemistry in their aura. It's the kind of "it" that can make critics everywhere thumb their thesaurus to "awesome" after only hearing the opening notes of an album's first song. Cuff the Duke have always had this ability and now Jon-Rae Fletcher and The River seem to be drawing similar praise for their more soulful take on old time country. Alot of this has come in response to their recently released Jon-Rae and the River Knows What You Need , but I'm a bigger fan of 2003's The [...]

2007 is going to be an eventful year for sure. It's only the second day and I've already had the worst experience of my life. And that includes the time some big dumb thugged out moron smashed my head into the gym floor at a school dance when I was in grade 10. How is it that Air Canada can suck so bad at what they do? Haven't they figured out how to run the business at all over the years? I had yet another horrible experience with AC last night. Not that I'm surprised, because it [...]
We're still taking our time getting back to our regular schedule on TFD after the holiday break, but I wanted to quickly throw up this video by The National for their track "Abel." The band has been criminally overlooked by the mainstream, the underground, the hipsters, the indie kids and even the all-knowing bloggers. In fact the only two people I have heard really come out to vocally support this stellar act are Bruce Springsteen and In-Flight Safety's John "Hoop Dreams" Mullane. Check out this video and track down their latest album Alligator wherever fine music is sold.

Is anyone else following the Miss USA story? Wow. If you aren't, I suggest you start right now. Google her. Tara Connor. I have been searching for the new love of my life for a long time. And I think I just found her. I mean c'mon. Late night partying, girl on girl action in public... And she was able to look smoking hot the whole time. Now that is good hard work. This girl just may be the full package. I mean, she probably has a hard time spelling words like responsibility, but who cares, did [...]
I'm sick, I'm tired, here's a short Wintersleep tour video.
Much like Sonic Youth recently pulled off with their stellar Rather Ripped , Low's 2005 release Great Destroyer was an accessible update of a well-established band's sound. With six studio albums proper already under their belts, few expected the release to be such a focused step forward in pop writing, especially after 2002's excellent but brooding Trust . Again, like Rather Ripped , the disc acts like a greatest hits album for people who hate greatest hits albums. It's all the best elements of Low's sound harnessed into a concentrated collection of songs that never [...]

There has been some shit going on in the world lately that is even weirder than the time I walked in on the Carnell brothers trying to replicate the Hilton sister's latest "photo shoot." Most of the time I'm pretty busy writing literary criticism (on R.L. Stine's body of work mainly) so I don't pay much mind to low brow gossip, but here are a few things that have caught my eye lately: Watch this, and then we'll catch up: [...]

I love the Dirty Pretty Things . And I don't mean the slutty HILTON SISTERS . (Is that picture supposed to be hot? Or is it just weird? And, is it weird that I still think Paris Hilton is hot?) Anyway, the Dirty Pretty Things are a fantastic rock band that was formed by lesser known ex-Libertine Carl Barat when the overrated better known Pete Doherty quit the young band to pursue his love of sticking dirty needles into his arm. Doherty was still getting all the press, as he was hailed as the [...]
Lucero's name has been coming up more and more lately. The band, whose rawkous brand of country rock isn't exactly the stuff of indie darlings, has been turning up all over the internet to glowing reviews. While much of this is due to the recent release of the excellent Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers , the group also seems to have become champions of the current urban cowboy movement. While most of this scene involves city kids all over North America adopting a southern twang to celebrate their country roots (i.e. hearing Johnny Cash's greatest hits once when they [...]
Wanna hear the most exciting news I've heard in a long time? Of course you do. And no, it's not that Rachel Bilson is single again. Although that is pretty exciting. Radiohead is back in the studio. Like actually recording music again, and trying to piece it together in the form of a full album. Wow. Just wow. They started recording a few months ago but then took a bit of a break. I am happy to report that the most important band of all time is now back in the studio, working hard on what will no doubt become the best album ever [...]
The Salad Fingers cartoons have been making the rounds on the internet for awhile now. The series is a bizarre mixture of macabre and humor that isn't exactly something everyone's gonna dig, but it turns me into a giggling Moses every time I watch an episode. The show's main character, Salad Fingers, is somewhat of a gender confused geriatric zombie. He lives alone in an old shack in the middle of a wasteland, occasionally taking high tea with child demons and holding dinner parties for corpses. His hobbies including rubbing rusty metal and making himself bleed. [...]
