Dr. Kelly Renee Showalter With her husband by her side, Dr. Kelly Renee Showalter, 32, of Lewisburg, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, October 2, 2011, at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. Born April 30, 1979 in Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of Richard L. Showalter and the late, Mary Elizabeth "Susie" Showalter. Kelly was a devoted wife, friend and doctor. She graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA with her brother in May 2001. She later graduated from WVU's medical school and [...]

It's been nearly twelve years since the Athens, GA experimental, psych-pop band, Olivia Tremor Control released a full-length album. 19992s musical collage, Black Foilage: Animation Music Volume One incorporated nearly every instrument possible, or so it seems and loads of overdubbing and cutting & pasting. The band announced a U.S. tour early this month and here is a portion of an interview with Cullen Hart, Eric Harris and Bill Doss of Olivia Tremor Control. This interview was printed in James Madison University's student newspaper, The Breeze in late 1999. [...]
Seattle's The Head and the Heart continue to build momentum. According to a new "On the Verge" article posted at USAToday.com , the band is working towards a fall headlining tour. After supporting talent such as Iron & Wine and the Decemberists and performing at Bonnaroo, the band will take part in the Austin City Limits Festival and the Newport Folk Festival. For those of you who haven't experienced The Head and the Heart's blend of pop, rock and americana, you can purhcase their self-titled SubPop Records album at Amazon.com [...]
"Yes, Republican base you are just like that jury. It is pathetically clear who is killing the middle class, but you (Republican voters) keep letting them get away with murder."
One of my favorite albums of the year so far is AWOLNATION's Megalithic Symphony . "Sail" is the obvious hit song from the album but one underappreciated song is "Wake Up." The song is a dancey, upbeat, bass-driven song that follows "Sail" and propels the album to its close. See for yourself: AWOLNATION: "Wake Up" Then there is the tried and true "Wake Up" from that band called, Rage Against the Machine. Their "Wake Up" is [...]
Here is a fascinating video from indie singer/songwriter, Josh Garrels of Portland, OR. The video is for the lead track, "White Owl" from his recently released album, Love & War & the Sea in Between. The album is available as a free download at NoiseTrade. The animation was created by Daniel and Arien Armstrong. Josh Garrels is a Chrisian musician but not in the obvious sense of the word. His songwriting is pensive, engaging and [...]

Barton Hollow , the first full length album from The Civil Wars is available for a mere $5 at Amazon as an MP3 download. Since it's release in February, Barton Hollow has peaked at #1 on the iTunes album charts, #1 on the Billboard Digital Albums chart and #2 on the Billboard Folk Albums chart. The band has performed twice on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in the last year. In addition, the Civil Wars have been nominated for Best Emerging Artist by the Americana Music Association [...]

"Win or lose, you know that you've been here before. Keep your eyes fixed up high on the blood above your door. It's a promise to you that will always be true, the sun is gonna rise. So don't be afraid of the place where you lay, just close your eyes." When I first heard this song by the Los Angeles based, Jason Heath & the Greedy Souls I knew they were [...]

After I scored Radiohead tickets for their show in Charlotte, I was browsing the usual websites for concerts nearby: Pollstar , Mountain Stage and the Satellite Ballroom. When I came across Feist's date at the Charlottesville Pavillion, I blurted out a gargantuan, 'Holy Shit!" The show will take place April 26 at 7pm and it is presented by a solid AAA radio station, 106.1FM The Corner. I've been a fan of Feist since I heard "Mushaboom" from her 2005 album, Let it Die. [...]

In conjunction with this music blog, today I started the Our Shadows Will Remain Internet radio station . The station will feature songs that have resonated with me recently. In addition, future programming on the station will feature interviews from performers such as Josh Ritter, an unsigned show and a local WV music show with concert listings. Any interested in bands and musicians can submit material for consideration by contacting me via nicedreaminc@yahoo.com. One of the bands I am currently featuring on the OSWR Internet radio station is What Made Milwaukee Famous [...]

Sometimes you discover sounds that deserve an instant replay. I've been spinning these songs on my iPod and in my time travel vessel for the last few days. Yesterday I shared "Turn Into" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with my good friend M/p. After listening to the song she wrote, "I've got it on repeat now." "Turn Into" is one of the best album closers I've heard in a while and the most emotive YYY song that's entered my ears. It's in the acoustic backbone of the song, the shifting, piano-punctuation 90 seconds [...]

With 2007 behind us, here's a my favorite sounds and moving images from the previous year: Sounds of the Year (5) Radiohead -- In Rainbows Undoubtedly, the most hyped release of the year finds Radiohead returning to form.. sort of. The album contains the breath-taking, "Nude" and "Videotape" from their 2006 mini-tour. In Rainbows also includes the most conventional rock song the band [...]

Our Shadows Will Remain blog would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas today. We hope you get to spend the holiday with your family and friends instead of being an instrument of greed for the corporation. Here's a song by Real World Records recording artists, The Blind Boys of Alabama. Peter Gabriel's Real World Records is the same label that houses Joseph Arthur's first few musical releases. The Blind Boys of Alabama have been touring and making music for over 60 years. They have collaborated with [...]

I couldn't resist being another minute outlet for the new Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It's not an everyday occurrence that agents of the media go ga ga ga over a movie poster. Today is an exception. You can also get an insight into the background of the film and how Harrison Ford has been fending off jokes about being a motion picture superhero senior citizen here. Cate Blanchett and Shia LeBouf will be supporting Harrison Ford for this installment [...]

It's been 8 days since WVU's unfortunate loss to the Pitt Panthers. It was an untimely missed opportunity for the Mountaineers to play for their first national championship in the Sugar Bowl. For WVU fans, the loss still stings but it's time to look forward to team's last game of this season: The Fiesta Bowl on January 2nd against the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners will be looking to avenge their loss in same bowl to Fresno State in what was one of the most memorable bowl games ever played. WVU will be playing for their second [...]
"WVU's main weakness is their defense." "Pat White is one-dimensional quarterback." "The way to beat WVU is to force Pat White to throw the ball down field." We've heard the criticisms all year about West Virginia's football team. Almost every critic from ESPN to Sports Illustrated to USA Today wrote WVU off after their disappointing loss to South Florida. WVU was a preseason top 10 team despite the criticisms. But following their loss to USF, most analysts and fans figured WVU was reading into the Radiohead song, "How to Disappear Completely (And Never [...]
A rescheduled date and a serious illness were not able to keep Regina Spektor from performing at Mountain Stage last Sunday evening. She cancelled three straight headlining shows so she would be rested for her set on the internationally broadcasted radio show from Charleston, WV. She was greeted by a raucous but respectable crowd who patiently digested her syncopations. Per her special request, the lights were lowered to near darkness due to an unspecified illness. Here's Regina performing "Sailor Song" at Mountain Stage: [...]
