I've been using Mog.com for a while now (ever since I joined their affiliate ad network that granted me free use of their streaming service) and the one biggest gripes I have with the service is its lack of music discovery tools. I plan on fleshing out this post into something longer with suggestions for improvements, but for now I'd like to just propose the simple use of of #hashtags for listening suggestions on Twitter. #MOG #RIYL and either some similar artists or a short description of the music sound. If anyone else [...]

If you haven't noticed things have gotten a little stale here on IFAN without any explanation, and that is because for the past few weeks I have been hard at work launching the website for the new project I am involved with with a couple of the fellows from LA Record , called White Noise . White Noise is a new LA-based record label working with mostly LA and Orange County-based bands ( Blue Jungle , Audacity , Jail Weddings , The Blank Tapes , Gangi and Tweak Bird ) and focusing [...]

You can listen to two new songs from the album, "Visitation" and "Devil Light", on Division Day's MySpace page and read a more in-depth write up on this morning's announcement over at Buzzbands.la .

VoicesVoices photo by Jesse Plume LA's VoicesVoices played their first show back in Los Angeles last night at Spaceland since returning from New York City where they spent two weeks recording with Guillermo Scott Herren a.k.a Prefuse 73. When I read that VoicesVoices recorded with Prefuse 73 in NYC, I got pretty excited, I can't think of a better combo. So to fulfill my own personal curiosity of how the recording went, I pushed the band for a comment. Recording was amazing! For two weeks Guillermo [...]

Eagle Rock, CA's Princeton have announced that they have signed with the NYC based label, Kanine Records , run by the husband-and-wife team, Kay Quartararo and Lio Cerezo. Kanine will release Princeton's debut full-length album, Cocoon of Love , later this fall. Catch Princeton opening for Au Revoir Simone this Thursday, June 11th, at the El Rey Theatre and check out their current EP, Bloomsbury , that Scott reviewed last year.

I'll be at a wedding, but really, one shouldn't typically pass on a Night Marchers gig...
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Desert Song This shit is like The Fountain , but set in the desert, and if you are like me couldn't follow that film or this video, the crib sheet is below. Part 1: "Desert Song" is about singer Alex Ebert's reckoning with the middle name his father secretly wrote on his birth certificate - a Native American name which means 'Devil' or 'Demon.' The opening footage is of his father chanting in Monument Valley - shot by his mother. [...]
I caught Band Of Skulls last night at a packed 3 of Clubs for Future Sounds "Rumble" night (Pete from Mad Men was there!). The band had played earlier in the evening at the Viper Room, but you wouldn't have noticed, as they delivered a finely tuned set that sounded as good as they do on their debut, Baby Darling Doll Face Honey . I just watched the tail end of Band Of Skulls live performance on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic , I think they are little tired now. You can watch it later [...]

More on both Band Of Skulls and Apteka later, but know this, both bands new albums are a great listen and both are playing tonight for free at the 3 of Clubs (1123 Vine St.), which is where you will find me tonight, hopefully celebrating a Lakers win. MP3: Band Of Skulls - Blood MP3: Apteka - The Sheet

If you thought you missed Magic Lantern's final show on Monday night at the Blue Monkey, don't worry, they did too, which is why they've scheduled this last minute show tonight (so last minute, they aren't even on the flyer) with Pocahaunted , Vibes, and Pizza! at the Museum of Neon Art in Downtown LA. Maybe you are wondering why the Lantern had to bail on Monday's show? Hey Friends Due to some babies about to be born, the MAGIC LANTERN show tonight is now canceled. So sorry, [...]

The Nashville duo Magic Wands have spent the last 6 months touring relentlessly, opening for Black Kids and the Virgins on the East Coast and supporting CSS in the UK, and tonight they wind down their current tour with The Kills and The Horrors at the Henry Fonda. This coming Tuesday, May 25th, will see the release of Magic Wands U.S. debut, an EP entitled, Magic Love & Dreams , recorded with John Hill (Santogold, Lykke Li, Nas) and released through Bright Antenna. I've had various versions of some of the songs on [...]

Extra Golden descend upon The Echo tonight in support of the legendary Meditations for a show presented by Dub Club . Extra Golden are touring the States right now behind their new album, Thank You Very Quickly , a six-song wonder of a record that was released back in March by Thrill Jockey. Extra Golden was formed in May of 2004 when Ian Eagleson went to Nairobi to do research on benga music , it was there in an apartment in the Buru Buru neighborhood of Nairobi with Alex Minoff and Otieno [...]

Just received word this morning that Sun Araw (the name Magic Lantern's Cameron Stallones uses for his solo work) will be doing an extensive European tour with Pocahaunted next month (routing here ). To coincide with the European tour Sun Araw will be releasing a new LP called Heavy Deeds , that is being prepared right now to be committed to wax (marbled baby-blue) and will be available on the tour and then online sometime after the tour has ended around July 5th. There will also be a CD version of Heavy Deeds [...]

Out next Tuesday (May 12th), Big Business are streaming their new album , Mind The Drift , in it's entirety, sans the commentary they posted prior to this. Big Business are out on a massive U.S. tour and return to Southern California later this month, playing the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa on May 28th, followed by the Troubadour on June 1st.

Folks like LA Underground and Rock Insider have been singing the praises of Avi Buffalo for months now, but in just the last few weeks, adoration for the band has begun to pour in from all the local LA blogs. What is mentioned everywhere is that three quarters of the Avi Buffalo are still in high school (for a couple more weeks at least) and Avi's seeming ability to write songs that feel years beyond than that of high schooler. For me it's Avi's voice, it's captivating, part Frank Black part Neil [...]

Long Beach's The Valley Arena will release their third full length album, We Died , on May 21st on the local label, JAXART Records . The full length release of We Died is being released as a 3-song 73 single featuring "Bait & Switch" & "Grayscale" and the exclusive B-side, a remix of "SOS4XOX" by Ikey Owens (Mars Volta, Free Moral Agents, Look Daggers), that comes with a digital download card for the entire album (10 songs). So buy the 73 and get the whole album digitally, or just by the whole [...]

I'll admit that before this year's SXSW I may have heard the name Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros a few times, but hadn't given them much of a thought. But when I returned from Texas they were unavoidable, everything was Edward Sharpe this, Magnetic Zeros that. NPR and KCRW had hard-ons for the band and when Buzz Bands took notice of their hour long set plus an encore in the midnight slot on Fool's Gold's first residency night, I figured it was high time I checked this shit out. Jeebus, thank [...]

Xu Xu Fang are the type of LA band that are going to get big somewhere else first, most likely on the other side of the pond. The band, featuring Bobby Tamkin (The Warlocks, Hovercraft), and Barbara Cohen, who sang with French band, Air, and has anywhere from six to ten members and up to four guitars, create a layered multi-dimensional psychedelic sound, that mags like MOJO and bands like Swervedriver adore, but is often lost on LA audiences. Seven Days Now came out this Tuesday and tonight's show at the Echo with VOICEsVOICEs, [...]
