Here is a man from Lisbon, Portugal, which is an artista de rua , this term is used to describe street performers in Portugal. This particular man uses a kalimba, a small piece of wood and rattles on his feet, he even uses a small piggy squeeze toy to accessorize his creative show, apparently there's no explanation of why he acts as a bird, anyway, enjoy this strange video.
This was a really hard thing to do for us, here at La Suite 303: to select from the huge music universe of this decade just a hundred of honorable representatives of the sonic dawn of the XXI century, the decade of the Euro, the iPod, global warming, energy crisis, the dependence on technology and social networks. We've surely left out some best-selling artists, like Linkin Park or Christina Aguilera, some indie wonders like Kings Of Convenience, CocoRosie, The Postal Service or MGMT or even some of our personal favorites like Björk or PJ Harvey. But we've selected [...]

If you happen to be in the Mayan Riviera this Saturday, November 27th, go to Mamita's Beach Club and you will see Brazilian legend Sérgio Mendes performing a free show (along with Jim Beard and Spyro Gyra ) thanks to the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival 2009 . You can stay at the Hotel RIU Lupita for $50 per night or the Hotel RIU Playacar for $77 per night. The beach, some drinks and excellent free live music, sounds like paradise to me.

After an extremely long pause in our blog, we're ready to bring you back some resources to enhance your musical experience, and this time we're going to give you our new podcast named Crystal Jazz. This particular selection was carefully designed to expose those artists who, I think, are some of the most prolific and underrated geniuses of jazz music, we've researched heavily to made this selection unique, neat and pure. I would like to give you a little brief on my music roots, when I was a child, I remember my grandfather playing the piano for many [...]

On my own perspective, I think that contemporary classical music is really misunderstood, because most people think that even though its contemporaneousness it is somehow outdated or boring, the truth is that there's a whole lot of musicians and artists contributing to reinvigorate classical music, in fact, most incidental movie soundtracks are composed of classical music because of its undeniable strenght to capture emotions, maybe it is too expensive to achieve a collaboration with some philharmonic ensemble and because of that there are less options. But continuing with the taste of our podcasts, this time [...]

This sunday, March 8, the International Women's Day is celebrated and it is the perfect excuse to drown yourself into a vast sea of music made by women, so we are sharing with you this astonishing blog: Guitarwomen , where you can find a huge amount of music from France, Iceland, USA, UK, Mexico, Spain, Brazil and many other places, it is a large catalogue of female related artists. Some of our favorites would be: Pee Shy , Vive la Fête , Camille , Róisín [...]

50 years ago today was the day the music died . On February 3, 1959, a small plane crashed in a corn field in Iowa, killing Buddy Holly , Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson . The influence of these musicians on contemporary music is undeniable, especially Holly who was a role model for the Beatles and everything that came after, he was the first one to configure the band with two guitars, bass and drums, and Valens a precursor of the Chicano Rock movement. La Suite [...]

This is the time of the year when we present to you the La Suite 303's Podcast about the best songs of the year, according to our personal taste and perception. Remeber that the tracks are listed alphabetically since we don't believe in assigning numbers to them (Who's to say which is the best overall track?). We have several choices this year but we sum it down to around 20, that's always our criteria, we always say "20 tracks, more or less", so some tracks didn't make it to the list, but it is worth to mention that this one [...]
Hi, first of all, I want to thank you for your support through 2008, and for continuing to read our reviews and listening to our podcasts . We know 2008 was not such a prolific year for music, compared with other years, anyway, soon we will have a Podcast with our own selection of the best tracks of the past year. Along with this post I want to share this video with you in which some guys play Jingle Bells using only microwave ovens and a lot of patience, it reminds me of that video we presented before named [...]
Recently I discovered an incredible documentary called: Touch the Sound: A Sound Journey With Evelyn Glennie , and one of the things that I've found so appealing about this film was the fact that Evelyn Glennie is deaf since her childhood, but she's also a remarkable percussionist. Through this documentary you can come to understand her silent life and her perspective on how she, literally, touches the vibrations of sound and how, despite her incompleteness, she has become a renowned musician nowadays. The director Thomas Riedelsheimer made a fantastic filmmaking work showing us her vision of this world in a [...]

On August 2006 we decided to make a meticulous research about the contemporary Mexican music scene to select some of the most interesting and remarkable tracks, the parameters were simple: at least one Mexican musician had to be directly involved in the project, at least one studio track should be recorded (but an album would be better), and it had to be done in this decade. More than 100 artists were picked, an MP3 compilation was made and it was distributed among close friends, the idea of a documentary film was even discussed (but, unfortunately, we all have [...]

The basic idea for this podcast came from a series of questions: how would it be if a band plays one genre and the next one plays this same genre combined with another and so on? would the change of rhythms be seamless and fluid? To answer those questions we've just put the concept into a playlist. Spectrum is a podcast that goes from one genre to another without any abrupt jump in music styles, this was made possible by a variety of genre daring artists that are the key to open new musical frontiers. Fortunately the resulting [...]

Recently I traveled for the first time to Newcastle and Gateshead and near the River Tyne, just in front of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art , you can find The Sage Gateshead which is an impressive edifice and a center for performances, musical education and conferences, built by Sir Norman Foster and Mott MacDonald . It has the best in acoustic performance, and sustainable architecture and besides the usual concert and conference activities, in this magnificent space you can also see soundchecks, rehearsals and workshops in progress. [...]

The story behind this podcast began last year, when I was planning a flight to the city of Guadalajara , Mexico to witness one of the most important music events of my lifetime: Björk's only performance in Mexico, the verminous organizers named that festival Sonofilia in which also played Ratatat , MSTRKRFT , Jay Jay Johanson and Claude Von Stroke . The odyssey to share with Björk , just a couple of hours was really an ordeal, at the end, through the poor organization and the fact that the [...]

Since such a long time I was planning to write a post about one of the most enigmatic voices of Latin America: Ymac Sumac . She was born on the 13th of September, 1922, in Peru. Apparently she was a direct descendant of Atahualpa , the the last emperor of the Incas . In her prolific singing career she had extensive achievements, including her performance at Carnegie Hall and other prominent efforts. I would suggest you to read her complete story or you can also watch this French documentary film and find out [...]

Rock is the term used to describe an extra wide category of music that has always been defined by energetic moods and appealing hooks. The genre is old enough to name one of its numerous divisions as Classic Rock, this subgroup may be one of the most eroded kind of music in recent history. A quite large but very limited playlist of songs ranging from the 60's through the early 80's can be heard over and over, leaving in obscurity some excellent cuts that sometimes are better than the A-list works by the same bands. Outside the Box [...]

Our monthly podcast saga continues, our issue for March is Caffeine and it could be quite different from our previous podcasts, but I think that it's intersting to find out great artists and offer you a huge range of genres, so this one is focused on dancefloors, is kind of our way of compiling tracks that you would listen on a crowded nightclub, in addition the tunes are mixed as a DJ set, so it is a great way to unceasingly wake you up or just make you dance furiously to get rid of your drowsiness. I would [...]
