It was strange to see so many familiar faces at Trees of all places last night. Some people say it felt like 2003, but it was a lot more like the 90's or 2000 at the most to me. I say that with no opinion on whether or not that's a good thing, as I have no love or nostalgia for said decade other than a few selfish memories that I would never wish to impact the lives of anyone other than myself. In other words, just because I may find "Dreams" by The Cranberries [...]

Last night was pretty chaotic. I arrived at Mabel Peabody's to find a disheveled Pocket Change outside the club sitting atop their equipment. Turns out that the band was not allowed inside of the club due to a member being underage, an issue the band believed was not going to be an issue. It looked like there might be some hope after the band spoke with some people familiar with the logistics of matters such as these. Lawyers were consulted, law books checked but the manager just wasn't having any of it. So no Pocket Change. Bummer? [...]

There are some great shows this weekend, especially on Saturday. The show at Mabel's and the show at Pastime really stand out, as well as the usual excellent and unfortunately overlooked events at The Phoenix Project and 1919 Hemphill. 1919 Hemphill recently released their second compilation, entitled How Ya'll Doin' Tonight? , and perhaps we can get an unbiased review soon. Some brief notes for the weekend's shows: Austin's Silent Diane is one of many great bands from the Central Texas' very rich synth-heavy scene, and it's always great to hear music from [...]

I sat down with The Cuckoo Byrds - one of the newest and more exciting acts on the Denton scene - to ask them a few questions about their burgeoning career as rock stars. The Cuckoo Byrds, made up of David and Lisa from the fantastic Denton vintage store Time Bandits, will be playing their second show together this Saturday at Mabel Peabody's. As one who bore witness to their first performance, I highly recommended you check these folks out. How long have [...]

Hole (House of Blues) Whether or not Love's personal life is in complete shambles is a case for TMZ and not WSJR. I can tell you that her latest record is DOA. I'm not a huge Hole fan but Live Through This is a pretty great album that showed me at young age, along with Liz Phair , that women could indeed rock. I gave the new album a listen through this morning and it is pretty terrible. Not as terrible as the new Liz Phair album, but [...]

Soular Power is the crate digging DJ duo Mwanz Dover (Blixaboy, Black Dotz) and Gabe (Smoke, Lollipop Shop). The guys were nice enough to send over this eclectically groovy mix ready made for pool side relaxing. You can catch Soular Power tomorrow night at the Cavern. Here is what Mwanz had to say about the mix... A pretty decent mix and a good representation of what happens when Gabe and I get together to DJ. A real diggers delight. pay special attention to the NF Porter,Joy Division and Grace Jones tunes. Gabe makes a little connection [...]

Singles Going Steady with Chris Pickering / Adam Cahoon (Rubber Gloves): If you have ever wanted to attend a DJ event with DJ's that have spent many, many hours making fun of DJ's, then this is the DJ night for you. I mean, when it comes to this sort of "45's only" or "vinyl only" punk DJ events, you'll always hear how it's not really a DJ night, because it's punk, or Ye Ye, or garage, or other things that aren't dance music, or used to be dance music, or could never be dance [...]

Psychedelic Furs / She Wants Revenge (Granada): Richard Butler's vocals have always killed me, and not in a good way, so I'm not exactly the guy that should or can write a nostalgic paragraph about tonight's show. In fact, the only nostalgia I have for the group is the fact that I associate it with "soundtrack dorks," or the certain kind of individual that works at video stores and only listens to soundtracks. I saw a couple of these narrow-visioned record hounds at Half Price Books on Northwest Highway the [...]

Sextape | FUR | Fizzy Dino Pop | Hai Hello | Lovelife (Hailey's) As resident pop music defender around here I am going to reserve any final judgment toward Sextape until after tonight's performance. I know SR totally shat on them and my initial listen didn't blow me away but sometimes this stuff works better live anyway. I will admit this style of electro-pop seems to have hit a [...]

After all the talk about Denton's Sextape in the comments section the other day, as well as a discussion I had with another WSJR writer today at our virtual HQ, I felt like I had to take a listen so that I could tell all you people what to think about them before you catch one of the many shows they'll be playing around town over the next few weeks. It makes perfect sense that Sextape features one of the founders of the once infamous (and now dormant) We Made Out Once , because their music can [...]
