Toro Y Moi is releasing his debut album - Causers Of This - February 23rd on the always cool Carpark Records . From Columbia, South Carolina, Toro Y Moi is the working name for Chaz Bundick who is busy creating his own new sonic thing. For me, the album recalls a patchwork synthesis of early Todd Rundgren, the dream pop of A.R. Kane, the more experimental side of Milton Nascimento & the psychedelic soul of Shugie Otis & the whimsical top 40 pop of The Association. Believe it. [...]

New Bloody Beetroots EP , Christmas Vendetta...Spares of Romborama Warp 1977 - Bloody Beetroots
It's hard to rank all of the songs that I think were the best for the year. I will say that there were a handful of songs that completely & consistently (repeated listenings) rocked my world from the first time I heard them. They were the songs I listened to the most; regardless of the mood I was in or what the time of day it was. Are they the "best" songs of 2009? For me they were; everything else was came in second. My top 5 songs of 2009 1 - "I [...]

Now that it's hip to say you've always been in to Peter Gabriel cause the hipster in you identifies with his choice of songs from Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, The Magnetic Fields & Regina Spektor that he's covering on his new record - Scratch My Back - due in February, I figured the hipster in me should share this amazing PG boot from a concert he did at the now defunct Spectrum in 1987. Thanks to the incredible Popdose and writer [...]
The new Midlake album, The Courage of Others is being released on February 1. I've had the pleasure of hearing it and was struck by the band's further forays into the sounds of classic British Folk music, specifically The Strawbs and Fairport Convention. Tim Smith of Midlake recently put together list of songs that served as inspiration for the new record. Check out the song below. Amazing stuff. The Songs Behind 'The Courage ...

After 18 years (18!) Martha & The Muffins return with a new album on February 2nd with Delicate, their first new studio album on their own Muffin Music label. The album was five years in the making and mixed by David Bottrill (who has worked with Peter Gabriel, David Sylvian, Robert Fripp). Martha and the Muffins emerged from the early punk/new wave/art pop scene in 1977 which was centered around various clubs along Toronto's Queen Street West and the Ontario College of Art. They catapulted into the spotlight with the song [...]

Dylan In The Movies is the working name of multi-instrumentalist, singer & songwriter Brian Sullivan. From Boston, DITM released their debut EP in 2006 and have a full length arriving in 2010 on American Laundromat Records with guests the Watson Twins and Tanya Donelly. File under moody orch-pop with a tip of the hat to The Smiths, American Music Club & The National. Nostalgia, loss, hopeless romanticism; it's all here inside some very melodic & yearning songs of desire. Here's a taste of the new record. [...]

Lupe's got a new mixed tape which he dropped on Thankgsiving; contains this hot track on which he lovingly wraps himself around a Radiohead classic. I think I really like this new Sia track. It says: Up With People! From her new album due next year called We Are Born produced by Greg Kurstin. Sort of reminds me of The Weather Girls meets Freeze (A-E-A-E-I-O-U) meets Deborah Harry's This Jam Was Moving. Or whatever that song was called. Bounce to this. You've Changed - Sia
Chris from Gorilla Vs Bear recently dropped a new song by Harlem , a cover of "Sometimes" written and originally recorded by Gene Thomas . The original (in the video below) was a smooth ballad that veered towards the more middle-of-the-road lillywhite pop sounds of the day. The song was then turned on its head by the Flamin' Groovies , covered by Dough Sahm (who gave it a Fats Domino "Blueberry Hill" vibe) and was also covered by [...]

Hard top believe but true. Gil Scott-Heron returns with a new album called I'm New Here on XL in January. Wow. And must say, this is a brilliant signing for XL. Check out this new tune. Where Did The Night Go - Gil Scott-Heron Required: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised Must watch:

The Montreal band CFCF have returned with just a great new album, Continent on Paper Bag Records . The album will be released on November 3rd. CFCF is the work of songwriter, producer, remixer/DJ Mike Silver and follows up an EP and his collaboration with Sally Shapiro he released earlier this year. File under atmospheric electronica that you can either shake your groove thang to or float off down the a lazy hallucinogenic river by. This stuff is in the pocket. [...]

SVB can almost always get into the groove and a quick intro to Nite Jewel by our pals over at Stones Throw saw some pretty quick disco dancing action happening. This song is sort a of twisted 80's Arthur Baker tribute on mushrooms - heard through the ears of Ciccone Youth's take on "Into The Groove(y) and Midnight Starr's "No Parking On The Dance Floor." Two words: Coo. El. Bonus video below. [...]
