This is your chance to see the creators of two of Baltimore's Top 10 Albums of 2007 in one place. Here's hoping everyone had a good week and got some time off work. I'm enjoying some vacation myself, so I'll see you in a few days! Tags: any given tuesday , [...]

I've known about this record for a while, but haven't had a listen until it landed in the mailbox last week. Jason Dove is a mastermind of pop and indie rock. Hear for yourself by downloading We Should Be Together for free until December 31. With this little gift to you courtesy of Jason Dove, Any Given Tuesday is signing off until we approach the New Year, as I head into travel mode to visit the many roots in my family tree. Here's hoping all of you have a good week, and [...]

The stately Baltimore duo Monarch ( read AGT's review of this Top Ten Album of 2007, If Children (Morphius)) to Wye Oak . Why the change? It appears there are about a dozen other Monarchs out there, including a drone-metal variety that has played Supersonic Festival in Birmingham, UK. As we mourn the passing of this name, we celebrate the prettier, more Maryland-centric Wye Oak. In celebration, download today's free MP3, "Warning", from If Children . Just click the link above. So I did have a couple things for readers before I leave for the holiday: the long-lived Baltimore band The Jennifers want to wish you a happy holiday and offer you a free song, "Christmas In Reverse". If you're in the holiday spirit, this song is icing on the cake. If you're not, well, you can't avoid sugary pop like this. Listen to it and warm your Grinch-y little heart. After you finish opening presents, see The Jennifers at Talking Head Club on January 8. Joining them are Dead Mechanical, The Flukes, and The [...]

While the caravan rolled into town late for this show at the Ottobar , as the bands were driving in from Chicago, the brutality did not get cut short by any means. The show openers, Shat , come complete with a very apropos name. Covered in phallic novelty items like sexual warlords and wearing no clothing other than their Hanes, Shat intends to be funny and over-the-top, but falls short, managing to be nothing more than degrading to anyone with an iota of moral fiber. Genghis Tron from Philadelphia are a [...]

In any year, it's a real challenge to pick ten albums that mark the best of the year. Comparing lists, you'll find several here that make many critical lists. You will also see some questionable choices. Selections were made for musical talent, challenging compositions, catchiness, and buzz-worthiness. If there's one thing Any Given Tuesday has learned in 2007, it's that it doesn't matter who you are or who your label is, it's all about how much buzz you generate around your album. Since readers are likely to be soaking in lists from websites and magazines all over the [...]

It was made official late last week: Leonard Cohen , The Dave Clark Five , Madonna , John Mellencamp , and The Ventures are going to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. The induction ceremony takes place March 10 at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. AGT was so close! The predictions for 2008 were off by one, choosing Afrika Bambaataa over Leonard Cohen. Mostly because the Hall is unreasonably light on hip hop (in part because hip hop is relatively young in the [...]

The release last month of Nirvana Unplugged in New York on DVD was a great moment for Nirvana fans lucky enough to have captured the original airing on VHS. Unlucky was it that VHS tapes don't age all that well, and my copy has aged like it has Progeria syndrome . This DVD release presents the original performance, both as-aired and the unedited full recording, in 5.1 Surround. The full performance includes previously unreleased versions of "Something In The Way", "Oh, Me", and a deceptively credited 30-second joke of "Sweet Home Alabama". Two new songs isn't exactly [...]

Alright, Baltimore: Hip hop is woven into the fabric of this city. If you haven't already heard about Salim (www.salimmusic.com), you need to (a) check out his debut LP, Hip Hop Revisited ( read the Any Given Tuesday review ), one of the best Baltimore albums of 2007 and (b) head to Sonar on 12/28 to watch Salim as he and his band open up for Rakim . Yes, Rakim. One of the best emcees on the face of the Earth (running neck and neck with KRS-One in this writer's book) has asked [...]

This is the first year in a long time that this writer has felt let down, almost insulted by the "safe" choices and lack of artistically valuable nominees for Grammy awards. Going through the list and seeing the same pattern of (i) popular (that is to say superstar) performers (Jay-Z, Foo Fighters), (ii) classic and revered performers (Eagles, McCartney), (iii) wildly successful tracks ("What Goes Around ... Comes Around", "Umbrella") and (iv) recognizable names nominated in non-pop genres (Slayer for Best Metal Performance again? Last year's win was based on band name alone) for the nomination year, I cannot help [...]
Irrelevant, a popularity contest; see the Grammys as you will, but for Any Given Tuesday, it's like the Super Bowl: pure entertainment one night a year. Speaking of the Super Bowl, did you know Tom Petty will be playing the halftime show this year? Hopefully we won't see any wardrobe malfunctions. So, without further adieu, the nominees for the 50th annual Grammy Awards (selected categories only) follow below. We'll get into AGT's picks for the winners in another post. Kanye West leads the pack with eight nominations with Amy Winehouse following closely with six [...]

Afrika Bambaataa, the Beastie Boys , Chic, The Dave Clark Five , Donna Summer, John Mellencamp , Leonard Cohen , Madonna , and The Ventures (the group responsible for "Wipe Out") are the 2008 nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ( check out 2007's inductees here ). The nominees, not to mention the Hall itself, are often the subject of much controversy and debate. Artists are eligible for nomination 25 years after their first release, making the Beasties and Madge nominees in their first year of [...]

Everyone has been talking about the release of Radiohead 's In Rainbows in a pay-what-you-want digital-only format, and not many have talked about the music. The album opens up with a low-fi electronic beat a la Kid A , blending into an island guitar riff that leaves "15 Step" lazy and unassuming, contrasting starkly against the follow-up, "Bodysnatchers", a SNAFU of a jam, filtering around a mucky bog of noise and trading places with acoustic interlude. Moving in sequence, "Bodysnatchers" gives way to the well-known "Nude", rather apropos as this [...]

Lexie Mountain Boys [...]

We should have Rolling Stone 's list by then, as well as Any Given Tuesday's. It's always interesting to [...]
