Goals

El Libro I have a confession to make. I think I've read the Book of Mormon in Spanish...maybe once, and I'm not sure if I actually have read it in spanish all the way through. I believe I did on my mission, but even then I'm not sure if that's correct. The past couple of months I'd been thinking of reading el libro de mormon in spanish as soon as I finish my latest goal of reading the old and new [...]

Mrs. O'Leary

Mrs. O'Leary This morning I exited our elevators and immediately noticed my supervisor walking by down the hall, wearing stretch pants and a denim shirt with embroidery on the back. I immediately thought to myself, that's odd, as I work in an office with an extremely conservative dress code (suits etc). Well, I turned the hallway and noticed that the hallway carpet was missing and the checkered tile was showing (On Friday we had a carpeted hallway). I walked into my office which was open (also odd since I'm almost always at work before my officemate) and noticed a table [...]

Karl Rove Rapping It Up
Carol Burnett etc One of my favorite things to do on Youtube is to enter the name of a favorite comedian/actor/actress/singer (especially if they've been around for a while) and see what I come up. Tonight I did Carol Burnett, a favorite since I was a small child. Enjoy. Carol Burnett and the incomparable Sammy Davis Jr. singing "every showtune ever" [...]

Round-up

Cool things friends and strangers are talking about online: Dainon Dainon declares his love and then curses Jack White—all in the same post. Confused? Well, let me give you a hint—it has to do with Elvis. I clicked on the link where it reports that Jack White is going to play Elvis in a movie and realized Matt Besser and Chris Parnell (two of my boyfriends) are also cast. I get to see both in the same movie? God does love me. John C. Reilly as a Roy Orbison/Johnny [...]

Bill and Brit--Now that's what I'm talking about--

Bill and Brit--Now that's what I'm talking about-- Darrell Hammond's impressionation of Bill Clinton has been an all-time fave of mine since he started doing it way back last decade. Seeing him do it live before the dress rehearsal of SNL? A moment that still brings a tear to my eye. The Bill Clinton at Spring Break sketch ? I start giggling just thinking about Darrell as Bill talking about co-eds. So, when I read that Bill Clinton gave Britney Spears a shout-out and said he was thinking of her (I imagined him giving the crowd a big thumbs up [...]

Boston? Sounds about right...

I've been asked if I'm from the East Coast (or in a few cases, Eastern Europe) all my life. Once, a linguist was very confused when I told her I wasn't from the East Coast, but from Eastern Utah (this is when I was living in Utah). I was the only person she ever got the accent wrong apparently. In other words, this quiz came as no surprise. What American accent do you have? Your Result: Boston [...]

Dinner...brought to you by butter.

Dinner...brought to you by butter. Let's play the imagine game for a sec. Imagine you're rushing home from work but have to stop by the grocery store for a quick dinner. You glance and see Side Dishes by Country Crock. The people who make margarine and butter spreads. If you're thinking you want convenience but healthy choices--do you reach for a side dish made by the people who sell butter? Then there's the fact that the tubs look very similar to their spread tubs. I have a sneaking suspicion that the crowd they are going for with their side dishes of Macaroni and Cheese,Garlic Mashed [...]

Memorable Quotes from the latest episode of My Name is Earl on nbc.com

I could've talked about my latest adventure with a dentist, the total "small world" experience my roommate and I had talking with the sister missionaries over dinner concerning Cindy or blogged about the Magnolia Bakery banana pudding that I made tonight for dinner or shared the recipe. Instead, I'm giving y'all memorable lines from the latest My Name is Earl. Enjoy. Oh, and if they are silly or dumb... I'm on full strength Tylenol 3. Good times. [...]

Ultimate Pistol Pete Maravich MIX
The Electric Slide So, the creator of the electric slide was featured on Morning Edition last month. He's considering a suit to protect the artistic integrity of the dance. I think I listened to this story at least twice. If you want to smile and shake your head--just check it out. A favorite highlight is when the interviewer from Morning Edition is asking an attorney about the prospects of the suit. http://www.npr.org/templates/s tory/story.php?storyId=7492263 Indigo Girls I've been a fan [...]

Illustrated Vignette

Illustrated Vignette Nathan Cunningham illustrated this little vignette that Mark Twain wrote about Jane Austen--with Legos. Pretty sweet eh? I haven't any right to criticise books, and I don't do it except when I hate them. I often want to criticise Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can't conceal my frenzy from the reader; and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. Everytime I read Pride and Prejudice I want to dig her up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone.--Mark [...]

Consumed

First in an occasional series of what I've consumed. Books: She Got Off the Couch: For the first third of this memoirs about growing up in a tiny town in Indiana--I was amused but didn't think it was anything special as far as memoirs go. I read the last 100 pages on Wednesday evening and now I think it may be just as good as "the glass castle," the best memoir I've read in a year. The subtle shift in the book and the story that [...]

Spotlight Music

Spotlight Music Brendan Benson By late last year, it was apparent that this year was going to be a crazy-good year for rock-indy-alternative-folk (what have you) music. Then a few weeks ago the Stripes announced that they'd have a new album out, probably by summer. Predictably, my boyfriend Brendan Benson announced a new album and a demo to download. Although several music bloggers have said its a departure from his usual stuff. However, I think its not too different from a couple of tracks on "Alternative to Love." Either way, new Brendan? Cool! [...]

Craftster Swap

Craftster Swap I signed up for a swap on Craftster a couple of months ago. It was a reading rainbow swap, and since I'm always being told that I read too much (only by my grandmother), I signed up. I sent off some needlework and the book "birdsong" and received these lovely gifts from "skitterflex." She sent me the book "A streetcar named desire," which I've wanted to read for a while--an ascot and two little knitted characters that have lavender and spices in their bottoms and can be heated up in the microwave. Anyway, it was a [...]

There's always someone worse off than you

This weekend I spent most of the time cleaning and organizing my room and hiding inside since I can't take my allergy medicine until I'm over this sinus infection (I was instructed not to give myself a medicine cocktail). This morning talked to my roommate who got back from Utah late last night. I was slammed to the wall from this sinus infection and wheezy lungs--but she revealed that the rash she had on her back was shingles. She had to travel, spend her vacation time etc in Utah with a new case of shingles. Yup, there's always someone in [...]

Show and Tell

Show and Tell I've had these pillowcases for a while, and I finally decided to embroider them over Christmas. I usually do projects for others, so it was a little weird coming up with something just for me. I was going for a seventies retro look--in redwork . I thought about doing the ladybug (the insect the turtle is looking at in pink and red, but ended up doing it in red too.)The light green matches one of the main art pieces in my room and the red matches my white duvet cover which has one red embroidered flower on it. They [...]
