Holy cow, where have I been??!! Don't ask. Let's just stick to the music. This post brings together two of my favorite musical artists as of late. I have always thought these two guys should do something together and sure enough when they did it kills it. This track blends their individual styles perfectly while incorporating unique elements that I haven't heard much of in the current electronic dance genre. Anybody else hear the Ska? It sneaks up on you half through the song. Fucking ridiculous genius. Skrillex & Wolfgang Gartner - The Devil's Den [...]

New Order was a staple for me in the 802s and 902s. Their music output has been played more often in my life than any other artist. This track from their album "Brotherhood" is a break from their more commonly known stylings. Just guitar, bass, drums here; no keyboards or electronics. The simplicity of that mixed with the beauty of the lyrics has made this track one of my favorites of theirs. So much so that I made a music film for it when I was in film school. I will embed it here for viewing, but don't know how [...]

This is not how I intended on ending. I had another song planned but as the days went by I felt like I was missing the spirit of the holidays in the offerings. It has never really mattered, the Musical Fruitcake has never been meant to be a holiday themed collection, but for some reason it was nagging at me. But what song would work? Then my oldest son's teacher sent home a collection of holiday stuff with him and this was on it. My wife played it one day as we drove and it [...]
So, here we go...25 new songs in 25 days. (I know I have done Fruitcakes with more songs on them, but let me milk it for the dramatic effect) I'm going to have to call in all of my favors, pull a few all-nighters and dig deep into my own musical consciousness to pull this insane project off. This is going to be like when they shot Will & Grace live that one time. But I am not afraid. No, not when I have the two musical accomplices from last years MF, David Leary and Bill Ryan. The three of us [...]

Another cover: this Mission of Burma song has been covered numerous times: Catherine Wheel, Graham Coxon (Blur), and Moby have all taken a stab at it. I like this one the best. - Bill Ryan Moby - That's When I Reach For My Revolver Click the image below to get more Moby through Amazon!

This act actually did have a track that lead out the closing credits of an X-File movie. Originally a Trip-Hop act formed in London, UNKLE has been involved with or had guest appearances from members of numerous other acts such as The Beastie Boys, Queens of the Stone Age, The Verve, Ian Astbury of The Cult and Thom Yorke. At one time the core ranks included DJ Shadow and Toshio Nakanishi. I love the early Trip-Hop, 808 State feel of this track and it's very out of this world space traveler vibe. - David Leary [...]

I don't know how to properly describe what Future Islands are currently doing to my musical spirit. Not since I first heard Tim Tevelia playing Love & Rockets' Express at Erika Zeigler's house back in 198? have I been so shaken by the music that one band has put together. Listening to this song as I write this post I get the chills and my eyes tear over the fact that I have found such originality and passion in composition. Seriously, to be 42 and have music make you feel like the world has no limits and that life is just beginning.....it's unreal. [...]

Azure Ray is a band (duo?) consisting of two very lovely ladies. Oh, and they sing too. - Bill Ryan Azure Ray - Sleep Click the image below to get more Azure Ray through Amazon!

Noise Unit is an interesting side project from two of the founding members of Front Line Assembly. Categorized as "Electro-Industrial" they have 6 albums going as far back as 1989. "Voyeur" was the first album released from the band since 1996 (coming out in 2005) and the 9 year absence generated a deep, thoughtful and melodic release that is very easy to get lost in. "Seclusion" could easily show up in the end credits of an X-File movie or some other alien abduction mythology tale. I often throw on my headphones, kill the lights, and edit photos to these tracks. - [...]

It's been far too long since I have posted a quirky track and I am not perfectly clear on why. This one really digs into me more than most I have heard as of late, I guess. You have to understand that I have been through the throwbacks and this project of Nick's represents a dabbling into stuff that I heard explored in the 802s and again in the 902s, but he seems to do it with an aplomb and passion that I simply cannot deny. Take a listen! - Joseph Lacko Nick [...]

Joe Strummer always put everything he had emotionally into every song he did. Even when the song is a Bob Marley song…RIP Joe. - Bill Ryan Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Redemption Song Click the image below to get more of Joe Strummer through Amazon!

Sticking with the Goth club theme for a bit, I had to add this song which ended up back in my regular listening rotation again a few years ago. This group from the Netherlands was a favorite in the clubs and was a true Darkwave band through and through. Also known as just Xymox, they were one of the 4AD staple bands along with Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, and Bauhaus. For a Darkwave song, this one can be pretty catchy. - David Leary Clan of Xymox - Jasmine and Rose [...]

Found The Horrors through Spotify late this year. Launched the program and there they were on the front page. To be honest, the album art is what drew me in. I have no shame in that though as I have found a ton of my favorite artists by the look of their albums. Anyway, I started listening to the album and quickly was enchanted. The big sound of the oscillating strings/synths/guitars were haunting and reminiscent of bands I have long loved. In fact this track inspired me to put the Kitchens of Distinction track that was posted a little while [...]
