I recently spoke with Steve Porter while he was making the round promoting his artist album "Homegrown." He's one of the most easy-going, funny guys you'll meet in dance music (or anywhere for that matter), and his club nights (banging a sound he calls "Porterhouse") are simply off the hook every time. Have you ever come home from the club or a concert with your ears ringing from the sonic assault they just endured? Of course you have. In fact, it might happen to you several times a week. If so, be warned that this movie is likely to scare the living piss out of you. I never have expectations about movies about the club/rave scene, because they are generally someone else's drug memoir or string of inside jokes. But even if you don't the difference between house and techno, you'll still enjoy this flick. It's appropriately billed as "The Legend of [...]
I found this guy ranting on Craigslist about DJs in general, and while I obviously don't necessariy agree with him, he definitely hits on some truisms about pretense. John Do and his partner Justin Gourley are the primary architects of Basic Promotions here in Los Angeles, and two of this town's slam-dunk tech-house DJs. I know there are a million Djs offering a million free mixes, but John Do's most recent "Tic Tech Toe" mix is continuing proof that you don't always have to actually visit your record store and drop twenty bones to enjoy the best a genre has to offer. Enjoy this. Set List: 1. Kaskade | Steppin Out | Om 2. Inland Knights | In Your Mind | [...]
Playing a guest DJ set on John Digweed's KISS FM show these days is a badge of credibility in dance music comparable to playing MTV's Unplugged for a rock act in the 90s. And being asked back time and again is an even bigger nod, and today the nod goes to San Francisco house DJs Jondi & Spesh. These guys are rising fast and that's not an accident. Their minimal-tinged house is driving, funky, and fiercely original. Check it out for yourself. Download the mix here . More info on their albums, more [...]
