and now, an editorial: has anyone else noticed the over-use which verges on abuse of the glockenspiel? for those unfamiliar, the glockenspiel is like a little xylophone which is often the instrument behind the high-pitched twinkling sounds in tunes throughout time. the glockenspiel has made its presence known in loads of pop songs over the decades ranging from Jimi Hendrix to The Velvet Underground to The Beatles to Radiohead and even to, yes, The Backstreet Boys. Not to mention a tour de force performance in The Boy Least Likely To's The Best Party Ever and numerous [...]

Well folks, I'm procrastinating, as any college student is apt to do. Can you blame me though, when I have to write a 15 page paper on Seabiscuit? So let's play a fun-filled game of what am I listening to (aka wow I'm so scene). Last 5 Tracks Played on Shuffle 5. "When It Started" The Strokes 4. "Avenues and Alleyways" Rancid 3. "Static on Channel 4" Elefant 2. "Saeglopur" Sigur Ros 1. "Anna (Go To Him)" The Beatles Gee that was fun. Okay back to the paper I suppose.
Sorry there hasn't been a post in awhile, but as a consolation, it's spring! "Seasons Change" Corinne Bailey Rae "The Coming of Spring" The Rapture
Smoosh opened the show and were well received by the audience. They played some of their hits, like "Find a Way" and "Le Pump" and also showcased some new songs that featured Asya branching from the keyboard to the guitar, and the newest addendum to Smoosh, 9-year-old Maia on bass. The girls were so cute and the audience loved them and showed their support after every song. The next band was Final Fantasy , which is basically this guy, Owen Pallet, looping violin and singing along to images on an overhead projector. I can't say I was [...]

What did I tell you, Al Gore is everywhere. Not only presenting an award and being lauded by actors and actresses left and right, but also winning for best documentary. I think the biggest snub was on Dreamgirls for best song. The movie was nominated for three songs, and none of them one. Instead the winner was "I Need to Wake Up" by Melissa Etheridge for An Inconvenient Truth. Best Supporting Actor Alan Arkin / Little Miss Sunshine Best Supporting Actress Jennifer Hudson / [...]

They don't bring anything new to the table with their second album, Neon Bible. "Ocean of Noise" was exactly that, a slow, painful cacophony of high-pitched twitter. [...]
Al Gore's most recent contribution to the global war on climate change is 7 concerts in 7 countries on 7/7/07. The global project, called Live Earth, has over 100 artists from Bon Jovi to Ray LaMontagne to Snoop Dogg to Kelly Clarkson on the bill already, with more sure to join. While not all of the cities have been named yet, Sydney, London, Shanghai, and Johannesburg are already pinned. The US city is still TBD (as is Antarctica) so cross your fingers and hold your breath and hope its one near you. Gore anticipates that the [...]
Ben and Jerry of Vermont ice cream fame have added a new flavor to their lineup. The flavor, called Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream, is vanilla ice cream with bits of fudge-coated waffle cone swirled with caramel. Colbert's take? "I'm not afraid to say it. Dessert has a well-known liberal agenda. What I hope to do with this ice cream is bring some balance back to the freezer case."

Sorry for the lateness of this post, but last week one of Motown's brightest passed away. Joe Hunter was the first keyboardist for the Funk Brothers, Motown Records universal backing band and the subject of book and later film Standing in the Shadows of Motown . Read more about him in the NYTimes article from last Thursday Hunter in the NYTimes
The 49th annual Grammy Awards opened with the reuniting of the Police. They brought their A game, rocking to "Roxanne", though I think Sting's choice of a sleeveless black shirt was a tad overzealous. I don't usually watch the Grammys because I am always disappointed by the fakeness of the show and this time was no different. Case in point: they have this thing, "My Grammy Moment" where three girls vie for the chance to perform with Justin Timberlake at the Grammys. It is pretty much the fakest thing I've ever seen. They apparently traveled around the [...]

Apples, Beatles settle trademark dispute "Try to see it my way, do I have to keep on talking till I can't go on" sang Paul McCartney forty years ago, never knowing that these words would be so pertinent today. Unfortunately, he can't go on. Last week, Apple Computer and Apple Corps, the Beatles publishing company, ended litigation concerning the trademark dispute between the two companies. The settlement grants Apple Computer ownership of the name and logo as long as they agree to let the Beatles keep using the trademarks for their Apple Corps. The decision [...]
Okay you have to admit, JT is pretty talented. This song has the sitar! Last big artist to do that was George Harrison! And besides, Scarlett Johansson is really hot. I want to be her.
