This week I was back with a punk rockin' show. I'm just going to mention a few thing's this week. First off I played a band called Tuff Darts. They were one of the lesser known bands from the CBGB punk music scene, in the late 70s. The band released their self titled debut in 1978 on Sire records (Ramones and a few other punk bands were also on that label). It was a mix of retro rock and pop. The band would not last long. After getting a new drummer, a new singer was brought in and a new [...]

Hey this week I did an entirely different show, one that was all surf rock and garage rock instead of good old punk rock. Why? for some variety, also because I've been collecting and listening to surf rock and garage rock for quite some time. I had so much of it I figured I'd play some it on CJAM for some variety. I'd also like to point out that this show was just a mix of bands I thought sounded surfish or garageish. I played The Who and The Kinks. These guys are kinda garagey at times, they influenced early [...]

The White Stripes come from Detroit. They formed in 1997 with only two members, Jack White on vocals/guitar and Meg White on Drums. The White Stripes have a variety of influences but mainly they are in blues, punk, and folk. The White Stripes apply a simplistic nature to their songs, it's just good rock or blues inspired rock. Originally Jack White (real name Jack Gillis) wanted to be a priest, but changed his mind. He was also an upholsterer. The group also has a gimmick, red and white peppermint colours. They are usually dressed in a variety of red, black, [...]

This week I'm gonna talk a bit about The Strokes. Julian Casablancas (Vocals), Nick Valensi (guitar), and Fab Moretti (drums), played together in 1998 while at a private school in Manhattan. Then they met Nikolai Fraiture (bass) who would lead them to Albert Hammond Jr. (guitar) and The Strokes were born. The bands influences range from Television and Velvet Underground , to bands such as The Clash, Ramones, and Guided By Voices. A three song demo The Modern Age EP was released in 2001, which generated huge interest in the band. The EP contained three songs [...]
Hey just a short post this week (I'll make up for it next week). I played some more obscure stuff this week. First off the song "Simple Love" is a song by The Saints, but not the normal Saints I usually play on my show. This song was taken from their 1981 album Monkey Puzzle . This album is NOT like the other Saints albums, Chris Bailey (the lead singer) took the band in a different direction, but all the other band members were different. Ed Keupper (original guitar player) left to pursue a career in Laughing Clowns, a [...]

This week I'll be discussing the band Wire. Wire is a band that is came out at the time of punk, but were a little different than the other punk bands. They were more of an art-rock band that the others. They formed in 1976 in England while at art college. Like the majority of the punk bands at that time, they came from art school; other bands that formed from art school include the Clash. Wire consisted of four members, Bruce Gilbert (guitar),Colin Newman (guitar, vocals), Graham Lewis (Bass, vocals), and Robert Gotobed (drums). The band had different methods [...]

Hey, this week I returned to my regular format of old fashioned punk and punk inspired rock music. This week I thought I'd mention some info on the band Public Image Limited. First of all, PiL formed after the demise of Sex Pistols by Johnny Rotten (real name John Lydon). They were an important post-punk/new wave band of the 80s. The original line up was John Lydon (Vocals), Keith Levene (Guitars), Jah Wobble (Bass), and Jim Walker (Drums). It is important to mention that PiL was mainly a trio (Lydon, Wobble, and Levene) before the line-up changes occurred. [...]

Hey I just thought I'd make a post about the Sloan show from Saturday January 20th. First off a band from Toronto called Spiral Beach, opened the show. They are a weird mix of music. They are quite an odd little band from Toronto. Before Sloan came on stage, the music that was playing through the speakers was mostly old punk music, that I regularly play on my radio show I Heard MC5 "American Ruse", The Clash "Drug Stabbing Time", Buzzcocks, and Ramones. Sloan came on stage around 10-ish. They played a total of 30 songs. Most [...]

Hey this week I did a show devoted entirely to the band Sloan. Why? Well one reason is because Sloan is an awesome rock band, the other is simple. Sloan is playing a concert at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit this Saturday, January 20th. I played at least one song from every Sloan album and one rare track. Sloan formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1991. Jay Ferguson and Chris Murphy initially played in a local band that was called Kearney Lake Rd. The other members (Patrick Pentland, and Andrew Scott) met and came together while at [...]

Hey on this weeks show I played a variety of Canadian bands that I've never played before; I'll just mention a few of them. The Marble Index are a three-piece from Hamilton, Ontario. They first started in 2001, the band some say sound garage rock. They are just a good fashioned rock n' roll band, some of their influences range from The Clash, The Jam, The Who, and many other Canadian artists. Their most current release is Watch Your Candles, Watch Your Knives . I played the song "All That I Know" from this album. [...]

As my first show of the year 2007 I played a couple of bands I've never played on my show before. First was The Scavengers. The Scavengers were a band from Auckland, New Zealand in 1977. They were influenced by bands such as Sex Pistols, The Stooges, and The New York Dolls. They broke up around 1978/79, and never had any album released officially. They did record a 12 song demo, that finally saw the light of day in 2003 (they have had various songs released on compilations before hand). The band split up and would go onto other bands, [...]

Hey, for my last show of 2006, I decided to do a best releases of 2006 show. I played new albums, reissues/remasters, and box sets. The order of the songs somewhat constitues a list of the order of my favourite releases from 2006. There were some that didn't make the list, as far as overall releases which includes remasters, box sets, and new albums, this is what I thought of the music of 2006. I just wanted to mention my favourite release of 2006 is the doors of perception box set. [...]

Hey, on this weeks show since we are in the holiday season, I thought I'd play some Christmas-themed songs. I played a total of seven Christmas songs. "Don't Believe in Christmas" was from one of Pearl Jam's Christmas singles. It is a live version of a song originally done by the Sonics. The next song, "Someday at Christmas" was Pearl Jam yet again, from the 2004 Christmas single. That song is actually a cover of a song originally done by The Jackson Five. The Sonics song was "Santa Claus", a garage-ish [...]

Hey, this week i'll be talking a bit aobut the singles box set from The Clash. on October 30th, The Clash released a 19-CD limited edition box set. On this box set are all the Clash's singles packaged individually as the original singles were but in CD form. The CD's contain a black surface on the back, as did The Rolling Stones, The Who's, and The Buzzcocks singles box sets. ON these CDS you also get bonus tracks. Some are dub versions/remixes of songs, [...]

What can you say about the Ramones? They have influenced so many bands, it is ridiculous. The Ramones came out of the New York punk scene that started out in the late 70's. They would play at the club CBGB's along with other New York acts like, Blondie, Talking Heads, and Television. They were a pop band with songs played incredibly fast. They were influenced by The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, The Beach Boys, and many other bands. [...]

Generation X, is a punkish type band that formed in 1976 around the same time as the UK punk scene. The name came from a book of the same title, which was about the mod scene in Britain. The band consisted of Billy Idol (vocals), Tony James (Bass), Bob Andrews (guitar), Mark Laff (drums). The songs were written by both Billy Idol and Tony James (Billy providing the music, Tony the lyrics most of the time). Their first self titled album came out in 1978. It is a harsh sounding album that fits in well [...]

Hey this week I had a really loud show, anyways, I'll be talking about The Damned this week. The Damned started off in a pool of musicians, in the late 70's among the musicians in this circle was Mick Jones (The Clash), Billy Idol (Generation X), and Chrisie Hynde (The Pretenders),and many others. The Damned formed just as punk was starting to pick up and scare people in the late 70's in the UK, in fact they were the first UK punk band that got a single released (it was "New Rose" in 1976). The band is influenced [...]

Hey this week I will be talking about The D4. The D4 are a band from New Zealand, most people haven't heard of this band. The band formed in 1998, by friends Jimmy Christmas and Dion (not much is known of the members names, except their first name). The D4 formed and started doing live shows in the New Zealand area. There isn't that much info about the band out there, the answer is in their music. Their first release was and EP, The D4 EP in 2002. In 2003 they released [...]

Hey, this week i'll be talking a bit about The Police. Most of you probably remember this band because of two reasons: that rich rock star Sting and the song "Every Breath You take". That's obvious, but what most of you may not know was that The Police started off as a punk rock band and formed just after the 1977 punk rock explosion in London, England. In fact, if you listen to the their early work and first couple of albums, Outlandos D'Amour and Regatta De Blanc , you'll still hear the influence [...]

This week was CJAM's annual pledge drive, so I did a show to try and raise some money for the station. If you still wanna help out and make a pledge visit www.cjam.ca for more information. Below is a play list of what I played and some links to download the show. 1. Pointed Sticks – waiting for the real thing 2. MC5 – American ruse 3. Sex Pistols – EMI 4. Buzzcocks – sixteen again 5.
