45's of the week: Giorgio Moroder, pre-disco

Giorgio "Looky Looky" (1969) Musicolor
Giorgio Moroder became known worldwide not only as one of the pioneering disco producers, but also one of the most important producers to use and adapt synthesisers and sequencers; Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" was released only one year before "Moonshiner", but the two tracks come from different sides of a similar coin. Using the pseudonym Tracey Dean (along with frequent collaborator Pete Bellotte), Moroder cut one of the ultimate glam-rock stompers in 1974. Several websites list Bellotte as the vocalist, but it sure sounds like Moroder to my ears, especially when heard in sequence with the nest [...]

45's of the week: In tribute to Fontella Bass & Marva Whitney

Two of the greatest female voices of soul have left us in the past week; may the amazing music of Fontella Bass and Marva Whitney always live on! While Fontella Bass will always be thought of as one of the preeminent Chicago soul artists (thanks in part to her massive hit, the brilliant 'Rescue Me") her roots and earliest recordings were in St Louis, MO. Fontella's third release (1963), finds her backed by Tina Turner & The Ikettes, and in my opinion is one of [...]

Roy Wood & The Wombles - I Wish It Could Be A Wombling Merry Christmas Every Day

The Wombles - I Wish It Could Be A Wombling Merry Christmas Every Day
What a crazy idea. Roy and the Wombles "mash-up" their respective Christmas hits and come up with this. I like it.

Salvaging Tommy; while Rock turned mainstream at the dawn of the 1970s...

The Who - I'm Free
While it's been fashionable for some decades now to debunk the Who's first fully fledged Rock Opera (remember, Townshend wrote "Quadrophenia" after that...), and I amongst the first was to shout about how Pete sneaked in the studio sessions of "S.F. Sorrow" and stole part of the gloomy concept, and some riff or two (most notably the rythm guitar shuffle he used in the hit "Pinball Wizard" he lifted straight from the start of Sorrow's "Old Man Going"...), BUT. Let's give back credit to Tommy : it's not true to say the Pretty Things invented the "Rock Opera" [...]

Derek's weekly 45's: Seasonal sounds

Call me a softy all you want, but I have a special fondness for Christmas music; I always look forward to spinning seasonal LP's by The Beach Boys, Willie Nelson, The Supremes, Temptations, Vince Guaraldi, and of course the Phil Spector collection while trimming the tree, cooking meals and opening prezzies with the wife. There's a handful of Xmas 45's that get yearly spins as well; here's a few favorites- some well known, most too obscure than they deserve to be. One area that wasn't explored very deeply by US [...]
