With three EP's to date - Facedown, Sex, Music For Cars - and a host of rave live reviews, The 1975 are quickly cementing themselves as one of 20132s break-out artists. Just when you thought they were done producing new material, though, they've revealed even more this year with their 4th EP, IV , out later this month. One of the most impressive things that they bring to the table is the eclectic mix of music they create. Their range extends from radio-ready singles like "Chocolate" and "Sex" [...]

We've been preaching the Magic Man gospel for a while now . If we haven't yet convinced how amazing these chaps from Rhode Island are, then perhaps their recent signing to Neon Gold / Columbia Records will. To celebrate the occasion the band has made a brand new track "Nova Scotia" available. The band is releasing the track as part of The Fox Den Demos , which also include previously released tracks "Texas" and "Paris." You can download them all [...]

Punk is not dead. I'm tempted to just finish the write-up right there: a four-word zen koan for all of you to parse over. Just pull a Mr. Miyagi and drop the mic. In the interest of being informative, though, here are some things to know about this song. It's called "Son of an American." It's about commercialism and xenophobia. It's funny and biting at the same time. It's also vicious and catchy as all hell. It's by a band called The So So Glos , who are the patron saints of Shea Stadium [...]
Alpine , the six-piece synth-pop ensemble from Australia, just released a pastel fantasia of a video for their catchy new single "Gasoline." Edited to a fluid stutter that brings to mind one of my favorite music videos of all time (Carpark North's " Human "), Alpine's "Gasoline" dream features half-naked dancers (also a perennial favorite) floating and whipping through an Easter-egg haze, unfurling themselves like a kaleidoscope. Lead singers Phoebe Baker and Lou James sing coolly through their vocal interplay, which is gossamer-light and a little seductive - the whole thing brings to mind "Run Run Run"-era Phoenix, Kimbra and [...]
As we mentioned in last week's post on Thee Oh Sees, Adult Swim has brought together a handful of garage rock heavyweights for a free compilation album, aptly titled Garage Swim . Through a partnership with Williams Street Records , the media house has released nearly 20 albums over the past 6 years, but this latest project is surely a standout. Garage Swim is a gritty 52-minutes-worth of raucous head banging that features 15 as of now unreleased tracks from the likes of Mikal Cronin, [...]

The Sweetlife Festival will cement itself as a District music tradition this Saturday as it returns to Merriweather Post Pavilion for its third annual run. To get you excited we've teamed up with the fine folks at Sweetlife to bring you the official kick-off party this Thursday, May 10th at U Street Music Hall. Headlining the night will be MS MR - who will also be playing on Saturday - along with support from Sir Sly and Magic Man . Three of our favorite artists together in one place - it doesn't get [...]

CHVRCHES are one of the few bands who've successfully brought retrofuturistic electropop out of shadowy SoundCloud nichedom to flirt with mainstream success. This wonderful remix of New York dark pop duo MS MR displays some of the production wizardry that's contributed to that meteoric rise. The Glaswegians blend glittery Footloose-era synthwave with the original track's haunting Noir&B to produce a very original remix, replete with crunchy electro whipcrack samples, skittering arpeggios and moon bouncing hooks. The track, which premiered on Annie Mac's BBC Radio 1 show last Friday, is available as a free download below. [...]

Remember the moment in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze when Shredder, previously thought to be dead, punches his hand through the rubble in the NYC trash dump and eight-year-old you was like "OH SHIT SHREDDER IS STILL ALIVE!! AHHH!!" and then your Mom yelled at you for using a bad word? Mariah Carey pulled a Shredder-punches-his-hand-out- of-the-rubble this weekend. We all thought she was gone. But oh good sweet lord, she is back. And what a way to come back! It's almost like she's been waiting on some gold-gilded throne [...]
What do you get when you pop The Misfits, The Thermals and Wavves into a blender? Bloody Knees - a big, delicious mess. Bloody knees - a group of childhood friends hailing from Cambridge (UK) - whip up a tasty concoction of horror-laden surf punk rock. Their debut EP is loaded with slacked off punk rock riffs reminiscent of Danzig-era Misfits with all the darkened fifties-pop pizzazz. All of the songs here - with the exception of skating ode "(Not) Skateboarding" - are written in classic Misfits fashion, dealing with themes of death, blood and the horrific. Why? [...]

Jesse Smith and Aaron Sternick have been making music together for years and under their latest moniker, Welcome Center , they've put together an EP called Different Joys comprised of five lo-fi rock tunes filled with dance grooves, fuzzy guitars, and miles and miles of heart. Listening through you'll hear pieces of early Modest Mouse, a touch of Desaparecidos, a bit of Clap Your Hand Say Yeah, and a slew of other sounds that are maddeningly familiar, but there's only so many names that can be dropped before admitting that while the group's [...]

Last April we outdid ourselves and pulled off two New Noises in one month at the always-amazing Gibson Guitars DC Showroom . Our second show featured amazing sets from All Things Gold alums Black Light Dinner Party and DC's own Honest Haloway . After the jump you'll find a bunch of amazing photos from the show, courtesy of Alexandra Friendly . Big thanks to Gibson Guitars, ASCAP and Palm Beer for help out with yet another amazing New Noise . Stay tuned for news on our next one. [...]

If you haven't caught onto the latest British Invasion, you're missing out on all the fun. An influx of talented producers from across the pond have been reviving UK Garage to much acclamation. The latest ones to break onto the scene, Bondax , are a bit of an anomaly. The teenage duo, comprised of George Townsend and Adam Kaye, are from a small town of 1,000 people just outside Lancaster in the rural English countryside. Though their beginnings may be humble, their sound is anything but. The pair recently gave their two-step treatment to Blackstreet's R&B classic, "No Diggity." The [...]
Janelle Monae 's video for "Q.U.E.E.N." is actually the best. It begins in a frozen bright-white dystopia of an art gallery featuring Erykah Badu as "Badoula Oblongata" and a ceramic skull who plays vinyl with a single gold fang - then "Q.U.E.E.N." drops with all its Prince-esque guitar heat, and in come the zombies on guitar, the 602s hotties and the standard poodle who just got its hair did. It's a pop-art marvel as well as an overt fuck-you to all those shade-throwers out there: Monáe chair-twerks, tossing her jacket's fringe as she sings "They call us dirty cause we [...]

After an extended period of silence, Jamie Isaac will be putting out a proper release this year in the form of his debut EP, I Will Be Cold Soon . Last April Isaac gave an interview for DIY in which he stated that he wanted to take 2012 to, "solidify further how [he] wants [his] music to evolve." Based on "Softly Draining Seas," he spent that time well. Complete with percussion that brings back memories of LCD's " Dance Yrself Clean " and piano chords/vocals that would make even James Blake pause and applaud, "Softly Draining Seas" is [...]
Katie Stelmanis, co-founder and lead singer of Toronto trio Austra , doesn’t think it’s possible for her to “write in a major key,” but she certainly brings major drama in the band's new video for “Home." Striking a balance between classical and electronic, the piano driven single expresses anxiety of waiting at night for a lover to return. The video features a melancholy Stelmanis staring at the camera as a whir of backstage activity goes on around her. Her apparent loneliness corresponds fittingly to the lyrics and makes for a captivating video. Who knew loneliness could be so catchy? [...]

LA indie disco quartet WALLA made waves last year with their single "Rising Tide," which racked up over 100,000 plays on SoundCloud. Now they're back with "No Time," the first glimpse of their forthcoming Nature EP . This diverse ensemble - hailing from far flung locales including Korea, Brazil, El Salvador and Indonesia - has a sharp, vocal-driven sound that combines electronica and live instrumentation, in the style of artists like Cut Copy, Work Drugs, Panama and Mitzi. The production and arrangement perfectionism of these pop fusionists shines through in the [...]
Milano Sun shed their summer skin on their latest track "Scandinavia." The Swedish trio are no stranger to new wave, having dashed a sprinkle of it onto last year's balearic anthem "Vertigo." They seriously upped the dosage this time around, however, toning down the sun-drenched instrumentals in favor of retro synths and reverb-heavy vocals. That's not to say the old Milano Sun is gone, though; "Scandinavia" still packs some explosive pop power in its chorus. The band has paired the track with a mysterious monochrome video, which you can watch above. "Scandinavia" appears on Milano Sun's six-track [...]

Say Yes Dog are looking to get a slice of that balearic pie. Hailing from exotic Luxembourg, the trio's funky brand of nu-disco pop sounds like a cross between Hot Chip and just about the entire Future Classic (Classixx, Flight Facilities, Panama) roster. Their latest single, "Get It," is a fantastic primer on their style. Stream it below and stay tuned for their debut EP later this year. STREAM: Say Yes Dog - "Get It"
