When I started this website in 1994 I didn't really know anything about what I was getting into. All I knew about Galaxie 500, Luna and Damon & Naomi was what I read on the back of the record sleeves, or in the occasional interview that turned up in the print media... and subsequently online. When someone emailed me and told me that two different versions of I Want Everything had turned up on different pressings of Lunapark, I accepted it as fact and published it on the website - although in the back of [...]

I guess I'll just keep pulling this out every year until someone tells me to stop... What d'ya think…d'ya think chicks dig scars? The film was made in 2007 by Max Finneran and is... a short coming-of-age horror film about sons, fathers and the roles they play and imagine for one another. Abandoned by his father at a highway-side pumpkin patch, an eleven year-old boy spends a peculiar and life changing night with the misfit [...]

Terry Tolkin and Dean Wareham ( picture by Howard Thompson used without permission) Going through my hard drives last night I seem to have misplaced a folder of "Dean Wareham" recordings (including the phone message Dean left me from Brussels in 1997!) - also missing were some of the recordings Dean made with Jimmy Chambers and Hamish Kilgour after getting a demo deal with Elektra shortly after Galaxie 500 split. A few of these recordings made their way onto a single (and subsequently onto the Speed Dating compilation that [...]

Naomi Yang - After Image To coincide with the launch of Damon's book Afterimage which features photos by Naomi the Aviary Gallery in Jamaica Plain, MA is exhibiting a selection of Naomi's photographs. There is an opening reception on the 3rd of November from 6-9pm and the closing reception, on November 20th will also be the official book launch. Many of my still photographs are taken during travels, for music or otherwise. I am drawn toward combinations of natural and artificial light, and often find images at sunset or magic hour - [...]

Today is the 7th anniversary of the great man's passing. Spend the day considering just how important he was to music - no matter how hard you try, you will not be able to overestimate that impact! Here he is introducing Galaxie 5002s Listen The Snow is Falling (mp3 via Box.net) - this has been lifted from the very excellent Keeping It Peel podcast . Previously: Here's last year's John Peel Day post from where you can download the [...]

OK... this one's recycled from only a year ago but given that this week the new single disc edition of 13 Most Beautiful gets its official release from Double Feature it seems an appropriate time remind a couple of the mixes from the DVD release never made it onto either of the CD releases. So first, if you haven't already got a copy head over to Dean & Britta's online store to order your copy of the limited (to 1000 copies) edition of the single disc release of 13 Most Beautiful (I [...]

One of the great and greatly missed Sterling Morrison 's final appearances on record was playing on a couple of tracks on Luna's second album Bewitched , one of the tracks he appeared on "Great Jones Street" was also recorded for the syndicated radio show Modern Rock Live. This version of the track never got a commercial release but did turn up on a 1994 Modern Rock Live promo compilation . I believe this version was recorded some time in 1994, Sterling passed away on August 30th 1995. From a 2008 interview for Things [...]
I've just been pointed towards this lovely interview with Galaxie 500 from a 1990 issue of Ptolemaic Terrascope PT: You're not a very visual group live. You all stand still and look serious. DW: That's terror. But if you don't feel like jumping, why jump? It's hard to be charming every night. NY: People used to ask me why don't you smile? Why should I though? There's nothing especially cheerful going on up there! Read the whole interview from the Terrascope archives .

Laika by Damon & Naomi Laika first appeared on Damon & Naomi's first album More Sad Hits but had been recorded earlier for the short lived outfit Magnetophone - you can read more about them on my previous posting of this version of Laika : Magnetophone - Laika (mp3 via box.net) Here's a recording of the duo performing the song at the first Terrastock festival in Providence in April 1997: Damon & Naomi - Laika (Terrastock 26th April 1997) (mp3 via box.net) [...]

Not sure how this slipped by but last week Everett Truerevisited his review of Galaxie 5002s Blue Thunder single . The record was given the Single of the Week accolade in the Melody Maker's singles reviews on 22nd January 1990 and was a pretty important step in Galaxie 5002s success. The review covers the a-side as well as the two ace covers on the flip (Victory Garden and Ceremony) and the article is more about ET revisiting his writing than about him revisiting the single - but makes for a [...]

I think I've posted most (although possibly not all) of these tracks separately before but here they are all collected together for your enjoyment. When the Galaxie 500 Box Set was released in 1996 one of the main treats was the three tracks from Galaxie 5002s first demo - what was a little bit of a surprise (to me at least) was to discover a couple of years later that a few of these demo tapes were compiled with four extra tracks - these had a very limited circulation but eventually [...]
Breathtakingly sweet video of Dean & Britta covering Galaxie 5002s cover of Joy Division's Ceremony at The Standard Hotel a couple of months back - you can view it right here but seriously go to Vimeo and watch it in all it's HD glory !
