Wednesday subway ride to work

Let the Devil out Rollins Band Nice Comments: Rollins Band does Van Halen , poorly. Joe#1 Fugazi Sub Pop 7" Singles Club Comments: Fugazi's entrant into the Sub Pop singles club is not interesting or challenging. Sinking Black Flag Loose Nut Comments: Probably the best song off Loose Nut. The short uneven album came at the end of Black Flag. Still this song about descent into isolation and depression is prophetic. Vikings [...]

Train Ride Home

Jack of Diamonds The Daily Flash Nuggets Comments: Harmonica driven psych folk. Not terribly interesting. Black Coffee Black Flag Slip It In Comments: Anger and coffee feeding me, is probably the best line from this song. When I first heard this song I wrongly thought Black Flag was trying to do the Descendents thing with coffee. But it was all in my mind. One thing that is cool about this is Ginn's solo. I think this is where [...]

Manhattan Bridge to 42nd Street

Ghostfire Tiger Army III: Ghost Tigers Rise Comments: I am really interested in where Nick 13 goes with Tiger Army. This song is punk tinged Rock-a-billy. He can also pull out some monster riffs. Either way I am there. Taxman The Beatles Revolver Comments: I like the laid back groove of this song, but this isn't one of my favorites. Dick Johnson Pussy Galore Live: In The Red Comments: I have never been terribly impressed with this live set from Cb's. [...]

Fact or Fiction?

Pretty Debris The Steppes Harps And Hammers Fact or Fiction? Upon the release of Harps and Hammer Ann Wilson of Heart noticed the bass line to this song is actually the riff to Heart classic, "Barracuda". As a struggling band they could not afford legal representation and fled to Ireland. All My Feelings Denied Thee Headcoats Beached Earls Fact or Fiction? This song was originally written for The Milkshakes. The song itself is a love song from Billy Childish to Micky [...]

After the Manhattan Bridge

And You'll Say Urge Overkill Exit the Dragon Comments: This was a great album and this song advanced UO as songwriters. Too bad this album got trashed back in the day. Make You Mine The Fondas Runaway Bombshell Comments: The Fondas craft great Detroit songs. There are 5 great songs on Runaway Bombshell. This is one of the great songs. Although the piano during the middle of the song is really annoying. Luckily someone only got to play with it for 30 seconds. Childs Death. [...]

2 Minute Count Down Vol. 2 - Yes You Can

Song: From Zero Down Artist: The Nomads Album: Thoughts of a Madman Comments: This album is 21 minutes long and mostly covers, but it kicks ass for all twenty minutes and doesn't degrade the originals one bit. A rare feat for a garage rock album. Swede's know hot to keep it fresh -- even 20 year old bread. Song: Get It Hot Artist: AC/DC Album: Highway to Hell Comments: I only began to love AC?DC when I heard Bon Scott's vocals. NO [...]

2 Minute Countdown Vol. 1 - Once again a Slave to Shuffle

Song: Polly Artist: Nirvana Album: Nevermind Comments: Looking back I was never a big Nirvana fan. Sure, I listened to this album over and over and over, etc. Bleach was 10x better but I never gave it the time of day. It's a shame. Years later the Desert Sessions included a song called "Polly Want a Crack Rock". Then I decided to never listen to this album again. I listened to it last year and felt the same way. This is my first dose of [...]

Miracle Workers - Fool via FoxyTunes Comments: Garage Rock goes hard Rock! Beastie Boys - Picture This via FoxyTunes Comments: DMZ - Bloody Englishmen via FoxyTunes Comments: Is it me or does this sound a lot like The Stooges "I Want to be Your Dog"? Absolution - In the Meantime via FoxyTunes [...]

Thursday,... Oi!

The Cramps - Jackyard Backoff via FoxyTunes Comments: If you didn't buy this album in part because of Poison Ivy and her pants then you are a liar. Jo Allen & The Shapes - Lowlife (1980) via FoxyTunes Comments: Bay Area Power Pop with some dramatic breakdowns and cheesy synth. Redd Kross - Bubblegum Factory (1990) [...]

Wednesday, A Day Without Cats or Beatles Mania

This is a good one The Rubinoos - No More Where She Came From (1999) via FoxyTunes Comments: You need to brush your teeth after this song. Sugary Sweet! Madame X - Nobody Loves You Like Me via FoxyTunes Comments: Loungey, jazzy, disposable! Thee Mighty Caesars - Rumble [...]

Tuesday...

The Bloody Hollies Satanic Satellite
The Milkshakes - She's Some Kind Of Girl via FoxyTunes Comments: great way to start the week... Les Miserables - vivre avec toi (Eagle) via FoxyTunes Comments: a little Mid 60s Euro Pop. French pop music was so much more palatable when they were just blatantly copying their British neighbors. Black Flag - Revenge via [...]

Labor Day-- It's a Labor of Love to post

the jam news of the world
Division Of Laura Lee - Royal Club via FoxyTunes Comments: This kind of reminds me of Girls Against Boys, but with a little more grit. James Yorkston & The Athletes - Banjo no.1 via FoxyTunes Comments: This is from an internet compilation devoted solely to Scottish bands. As you can probably imagine there is a ton of folk tinged rock. Check it out here . [...]

Sunday...

The Von Bondies - Going Down via FoxyTunes Comments: I was just thinking about the time Jack White took Jason Stollmeister out to the shed. Dead Weather played Conan the other night and Jack White still looks like a big scary guy. Operation Ivy - Gonna Find You via FoxyTunes Comments: Do people still obsess about an Operation Ivy reunion? T.S.O.L. - Crybaby via FoxyTunes [...]

Summer's Over

The A's - Words via FoxyTunes Comments: They don't mean a thing? Words always mean something, but this song is more about not listening. Great New England band that seems to have gotten lost in the great vortex of Rock and Roll. Larry's Rebels - i'll make you happy (Impact) via FoxyTunes Comments: At some point a musical genre will catch your ear, turn you on and unleash your [...]

Slave To The Subway; The Virgin Record Store Clearance

A trip into the city today gave me an excuse to check out the "Going Out of Business Sale" at the Virgin Megastore. After about an hour I realized that 30% off CD's didn't make it worthwhile to pick up a few. I did look around and a few things surprised me: - The Who Greatest Hits sported a "As Seen on TV" sticker. The sticker included such no brainers that CSI features their songs in their opening credits. There was also refer to a song licensed to a Nissan commercial. The person who came up [...]

And A-Rod finally exhales...

Jackson 5ive Cartoon
Song: Purple Wonderland Artist: Cathedral Album: Hopkins (The Witchfinder General) Comments: No doubt that the hardcore Cathedral was experiencing a minute of "What the fuck is this shit?". Lee Dorrian throws in a minute of electronic music before the keyed down guitars roar into action. Song: Surf Trek Artist: The Rubinoos Album: Paleophonic Comments: It's hard to imagine what was worse Star Trek V: The Final Frontier or this mish mash of rock and roll using the Star Trek theme song as a template. Song: ABC Artist: The Jackson 5 Album: The [...]

Some interesting tidbits...

Song: Watch This Artist: The Slackers Album: Give Em The Boot Comments: The title of the series comes from a lyric in " Roots Radicals " from ...And Out Come the Wolves by Rancid . The head of Hellcat Records is Tim Armstrong , who is lead singer and guitarist for Rancid. Back on the Map!

Song: Doesn't Matter Artist: The Chosen Album: New World Comments: Here is a great mod punk anthem. I found this on a Spanish Mod site which seems to feature and inordinate amount of 7 inch Detour Records releases. Seeing how Mods Mayday 2009 is next weekend I thought this would be a great track to kick off the first Slave to Shuffle in a dogs age. Jimmy Morbid is still MIA (technical reasons). For the four of you still tuning in, here you go Song: Ghosts Artist: The Ettes Album: [...]

39 reasons to play it safe

Who shot John Lennon?
Song: Pink Turns to Blue Artist: Husker Du Album: Zen Arcade Comments: What a depressing song... This is about a heroin addict on the verge of death. Grant Hart had his battle with heroin and even tested positive for AIDS. Last check he kicked the habit, but this song is clearly about a battle with his demons. Here is hoping that it doesn't get that bleak for everyone out there in the world. Drugs are fun until you end up like that guy in the cop show-- Face down in Puke! Song: In The Midnight [...]

How are you spending your St. Patty's Eve?

Lost Sounds - live interview @ vpro-radio, nl, 03-23-2005
Song: I Found Out Today Artist: Chrome feat. Damon Edge Album: Another World Comments: Nothing says doom and gloom like Jimmy Morbid. This one is for him. I happened along on this $1 CD at some point and found it dislodged in my CD collection in the basement. Samples, Keys, etc. Not my cup of tea but since I have been listening to JAMC a lot lately this ain't too bad. Song: Really Stupid Artist: The Primitives Album: The Indie Scene 1986 Comments: I [...]
