I started to make a mix with love crap (Valentine's and all), but it didn't pan out (as it often happens with love). Then I thought anti-love, but that was lame (in theory and practice). I figured all newness, but that wasn't working out either. Then I realized I don't need a theme, so here's great stuff in one mix. Enjoy it all. This goes out to Chi McBride because I caught The Brothers Solomon this week. Chi (which I found out is "shy" not "chee") is top-notch in comedic [...]
Just in case anyone wants the MP3, here's a terrible internet rip for all of you to enjoy. Whitest Kids U Know - Dinosaur Rap It's hard to explain why I think this is so funny. It's not the absurdity of smoking pot with dinosaurs , it's the absurdity of making fun of the absurdity of smoking pot with dinosaurs. I don't know if it was intentionally layered with satire, but it's truly remarkable. Except the "'cause he's got little arms" line. That's freakin' outright hilarious.

Amy Winehouse - Cupid She nails that street reggae/ska sound again .
It's been a few days, but I've also collected a few new tunes to post. Envelopes - Party Some bassy-guitar rock with a nice "Total Eclipse of the Heart" reference myspace Ghostland Observatory - Dancing on My Grave At their best on the "if Freddie Mercury were alive (and hung out with Was (Not Was))" vibe myspace Professor Murder - Flex-It Formula Older stuff that I heard [...]
My host, which is on the list of companies that I would not recommend doing business with, is experiencing a power outage. I wonder if they're in some severe weather location? If they are, here's IT rule number one: have an emergency plan. Anyway, I can't post new songs because, despite having an outage, they've also seemingly locked all their sites. I can't upload files, but I can add to this blog database (assuming the save goes through this time). It's not cool because I have a couple new songs I'd like to share. I've been tossing around [...]

Just in case you were thinking I started to enjoy my job today, I figured I'd let ol' Huey Lewis explain it for me. Huey brings up a good point too, backed up by the News: I'm takin' what they givin' (not enough) and workin' for a livin'. I'm not livin' all that much because there's all this workin' going on. I'm currently looking at my living room and trying to figure out how to move everything around to make some more creative juices flow. Not feng shui, exactly, but maybe sorta. I just need more light and more space. [...]
Pop Tarts Suck Toasted 1 posted a new Man Man song from Rabbit Habbits. It's what we've come to love and expect from the band, but not in a boring way. Man Man is nothing short of interesting, strange, and exciting. "Top Drawer" starts us off in a good direction, but Man Man strike me as the type of band that takes joy in moving us off the course 2 . Regardless of where we go, if Man Man delivers like they did on Six Demon Bag , [...]

Continuing on both my Yes! A new Bound Stems record AND my I hate my job and, despite my nonviolent nature, would kill it if it were alive kicks, comes solo music from Janie Porche, Bound Stems' vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and resident female. Porche seems like a very interesting individual and has had a bit of celebrity in the past. Now she's with the Stems, but if you dig deep enough into the internet archives, you can find some old solo tunes, including this song, which put a big smile on my face today [...]

Funny that a band named after the leader of "the free world" release a song called "Mixed Up S.O.B." right around primary voting time. It's a good way to get attention, eh? However, it didn't work that way for me. I just stumbled on the news this morning after seeing an ad for them coming to Philadelphia (though the band posted the new song five days ago). They have a new record coming March 11, These are the Good Times People . PUSA is one of those bands that do try many subtly different things on each [...]

So sometimes I update three times a day and sometimes I don't update for three days. At least there aren't enough people who come here to whine about it. I just wanted to share some new Louis XIV, off of their new Slick Dogs and Ponies , which is a fun record featuring everything from creepy stalking tunes to just straight glam-blues rock that makes Louis stand out. If you liked Illegal Tender , you're in store for more goodness. Louis XIV - Sometimes You Just Want To [...]

Understand that I realize this song is called "Live from the Plantation," and my job's not that bad, though slaves did get to meet people and I'm isolated from all humans, regardless of race, creed, or anything else. But yeah... I need a new job. I need to be around creative people who are willing to work together . Being a cronie for a one-man-act is not my bag. AND WHY IS HE STILL CALLING ME PETER?!?! Mr. Lif - Live From the [...]

Before Santi White turned Santogold she was in a makeshift punk-ish band called Stiffed , which had a pretty fair album, like cooler, old-school No Doubt business. If the band had some tenacity, they may have been able to resurrect the now-outdated sound of indie pop/punk/reggae from the 90's, but they ultimately disbanded for some reasons, which can't be limited to White hanging out with MIA and getting all alternative on everybody. When I played "Creator" on the radio last year people thought the CD player was broken, but it's that noise and rythm mixed with sensual [...]

If their Hey Hey My My Yo Yo was too poppy for you, you might enjoy this new EP from the world's greatest... I don't know what they're the greatest at, but it's something. Say Hello, Wave Goodbye finds Jr/Sr on a more hip line of dance tunes, sort of piggy-backing off the successful Go Team! stylings, but still maintaining their own (very unique) identity. It's a nice exposition to demonstrate how Jr/Sr's been at it for a while and they're still having as much fun as day one. Junior [...]
Michael Jackson's iconic Thriller is being re-issued for the 25th anniversary, featuring six bonus, new tracks, five which try to force Michael Jackson into being relevant. "What?" you ask, "When did he become ir relevant?" Good question- he didn't. That's why Kanye West and Fergie make complete fools out of themselves on "Billie Jean" and "Beat It," respectively. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is mutilated into this dreadful attempt at a club cut by Akon. Will.i.am makes the best efforts to modernize timelessness on "The Girl is Mine," which could also be worked at the right club scene, [...]
Suspend any willfulness to look cool and just enjoy this song for what it is. Pretend you're in the room with him and sing along. Do it because I said so. Gonzales put out a Solo Piano record in 2004 and recently got some cred for his work with Feist. Now he's gearing up for the release and supporting tour of Soft Power (coming in April). Gonzales - Working Together

I've been actively anticipating a new Bound Stems record... maybe a week after I first heard Appreciation Night . I wanted to hear what they'd do next. Then I back-tracked to The Logic of Building the Body Plan (loved it), but NOW there's new hope on the horizon. We're within a year (probably a half-year) of a new record. I get excited about things like this . The Family Afloat , tentatively coming June 10th. Bound Stems - Andover from Appreciation Night [...]
My office has giant windows. They're really quite nice, but sort of not at the same time. The drawback is that each window opens out (like a door), not up. It's held shut by three latches that climb to the top of the window. I'd say each window is about 6 feet tall and they're about 3-4 feet off the ground. But the latches aren't the problem because the top two are always open. I just open the bottom one and in comes the soothing oxygen of a world outside the stale office. But the window doesn't have a brace [...]

Mayday w/ Cee-Lo - Groundhog Day Before the day comes, get the 15th Anniversary Edition DVD . Related: New Gnarls

As you know, I get a lot of free time at work. It's not the challenge of challenges I was hoping for here, so I often bring in my computer to play some music to pass the time and drown out the insanely annoying 1 vent blowing above my head. Then I watched TV online (with NBC and ABC leading in delivery, and CBS waaaay behind- even the CW has them beat), then some online-only TV (Clark & Michael). Then I ran out. Enter my boredom savior, SATVOD , which allows you [...]
