On Thursday I saw the Tallest Man on Earth at the Independent. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Wheel from Denver opened. As I walked into the club, I saw that tables were laid out, covering most of the floor. I'd been to partially seated shows at the Indie before but I did not expect this show to be seated. It definitely changes the dynamic of the show to have people seated and spaced out as opposed to crunched up against the stage. [...]

"Really Fantasy Baseball" infographic by Craig Robinson I've been really enjoying Craig Robinson's baseball infographics . They're mostly quite serious (and not music-related) but this one is one I found to be pretty funny. He played an imaginary baseball game between the Wu Tang Clan and the E Street Band . I don't know about playing Max Weinberg in center (I'd put him at catcher), the Boss pitching or Ghostface Killah catching, but Method Man in center makes sense at least. [...]

I may post this song every year, but it's just so so good. Sufjan Stevens - Star Spangled Banner (live) (mp3) [Ed note: despite the dark tone of both the photo and the song and the fact that I'm moving abroad , I do love these United States and the freedoms and opportunities we have here.]
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): Octopus Project - Wet Gold (mp3) ( [...]

You may have suspected something was up when I announced my final radio show . I've been sitting on this news for a while and trying to decide when and where to break it. I thought this announcement would be better than it coming with no warning[1]. In a shade over a month I'll be moving. I'm going to Cape Town, South Africa for an undetermined amount of time. I won't be continuing this blog in the same capacity during that time. I've really enjoyed writing it for the last two-plus years. I've gotten to share [...]
Here are a bunch of links and thoughts and things that have come up over the last few days. - Yup, Michael Jackson died. I've been pondering whether to post about it. If you want a proper tribute and a truly excellent MJ mix, head to Soul Sides . I think something that people do realize and what I think is most amazing is that Jackson holds the record for best selling album of all time by a factor of >2X . That is, if the second best [...]

Andrew Bird, changing the way I hear his music, at the Fillmore, May 2007 Usually, I like a bands' recordings and then I'll see them live. Sometimes, though, something about a band's music won't click until I see them live. I find the oddest part of this phenomenon not that I'll like bands live whose recordings didn't work for me, but that when I go back to listen to the recordings afterwards, I'll hear them differently often forever . For example, I'd listened to Mumford & Sons before SxSW and [...]

You should be saying yay. Joe Pug at KZSU last November Joe Pug ( myspace ) whose 2008 release, the Nation of Heat EP, hit me quite hard has released the outtakes from that session as a new EP, In the Meantime and it's free on his website . You should check it out because, well, it's free and Pug makes good music. Pug operates solidly within the [...]

If you have indie rockers friends that are getting married, here's an idea: get some hand silk-screened posters and get then signed by the bands. Here are a few I recently gave some friends featuring John Vanderslice Iron & Wine , Damien Jurado , and Magnolia Electric Co . [click for bigger versions] John Vanderslice w/ the Magik*Magik Orchestra at the Great American Iron & Wine at Asbury Hall [...]

Friday night I saw something different at the Independent: King Sunny Ade & His African Beats. From Nigeria, they play Juju music , popular music which is influenced by Yoruba percussion. In a room drenched in the smell of pot and body odor and with a distinctly different crowd than the average indie show at the Independent, Ade played a two hour-plus set to the appreciative crowd. The band was a big one: Ade on vocals and sometimes guitar, two additional vocalists, seven percussionists, guitar, bass, and keyboards. Everyone in the band [...]

I've always been a bit of a weird music instrument nerd. Hardanger fiddle ? Love them. Mridangam ? I want one. Bouzouki ? I have one. Near the beginning of this odd obsession, I was interested in musical saws. This was before In the Aeroplane Over the Sea , before Laura Gibson toured with a saw player. The sort of people that played musical saws-at least the ones I could find-were mostly people who attempted to play classical music or popular songs on them. Then a friend told me about a band called [...]

cred: ipickmynose As I mentioned last week, I won't be applying for a radio show next quarter or in the foreseeable future. Last week's show was a special, as is this week's and next week's. The show, which is called "I Once Was Canadian", on KZSU 90.1FM will runs on Tuesdays from 3-6pm PST . Listen on the "radio" (remember those?) or online . Last two shows: Today : African and old-timey music. I'll shed some [...]
