Sorry for the lack of posting. It's the end of the semester (and my last semester at that, at least in pre-grad school) and the papers, posters, and exams are all piling up. You forgive me. OK. Peter, Bjorn & John haven't exactly been a B-Sides band on the New Balearic. The podcast picked up on the whistling trio back in June and have since featured tracks such as "Young Folks", "Let's Call It Off", "Amserdam", and "Paris 20043. However, many other bands have also picked up on PB&J, resulting in an influx of remixes covers and mashups, [...]

James Chapman, aka Maps , has been releasing some amazing stuff over at his MySpace consistently for about a year now. So far he has released a bunch of EPs, but finally, FINALLY, he is releasing a long anticipated LP appropriately titled We Can Create via Mute Records on May 14th. Maps is ambient homemade electronica at its best. Take "Don't Fear" for example, starting with gorgeous synths that just demand your attention. Slowly, Chapman's soft repetitive vocals accompany them perfectly and the song takes off from there, [...]

A fitting video for the rant of Dan le Sac and Scroobius Pip that is taking the island by storm. I couldn't find a quality version of the video so YouTube will have to be tolerated this time...

Audion , aka Matthew Dear, has always been a headache for podcasters such as myself. His tracks are so bleeding long and fantastic, but if I include them his song will take up 1/4 of the entire podcast. Occasionally, I'll mix some of his tracks into other tracks in an effort to include them, but all to often his tracks painfully don't make it onto the podcast. In an effort to squash this trend before even more mammoth tracks by artists like Audion disappear into nothingness, a new section called "Ode to Longevity" will showcase these tracks. While [...]
Lots of gems on this one. I'm not sure how many of your even read this lame prelogues anyway, so I'll let the music do the talking on this one. I present to you, Episode Seventeen: Tracklisting: (1 hour, 20 minutes) Gotye - 'A Distinctive Sound' ( [...]

Leslie Feist is a machine. At some point, between recording her last album Let It Die , Feist has found time to tour extensively in support of her album (and with Broken Social Scene , as well as countless guest appearances), released Open Season (an album featuring remixes of Let It Die tracks), collaborated with bands like Postal Service and Peaches , AND found time to write tracks for her upcoming album The Reminder . What's even more amazing is the pure quality of tracks have been [...]

Photo: Adrian Fish If this website was working a month ago, I would have been all over this album. Ongiara is the third release of Canadian band Great Lake Swimmers , and it is by far their most accomplished release yet. The album is actually avaliable in digital format now through iTunes, and set to hit the CD racks on March 27, via Weewerk on 123. The lyrics of Ongiara perfectly describe the glory of the Canadian landscape, while the albums lightly-layered melodies matches its depth. These are [...]

Photo: martinlissmyr I am absolutely floored that these tracks have managed to miss previous episodes of The New Balearic. Anders Trentemøller is honestly one of my favourite DJs ever. Listening to his last LP, The Last Resort , is this epic experience, combining the ambience of warm textures, and indiscreet samples with the massive beats and sonic overload of electronica. No other DJ meshes the two genres more successfully. Somehow, between his seriously heavy digital beats, he still maintains this light and organic theme that dominates so many of his songs. Similar [...]

Whenever I make a podcast, the initial list for each episode starts at about 50 songs. Slowly and reluctantly, this list is widdled down to the 15-20 tracks that actually make it onto the episode. As a result, some astonishingly fantastic songs get pushed and pushed off the list until they vanish off my playlist completely. Rather then letting these tracks simply disappear, I'm going to post the mp3's here so that you can still hear them. Naturally they might not be the newest tracks (as is the case today), but the quality is most definately not lacking. [...]
