.mp3s of the Week: Organos, Old Ceremony and more!

Here are two .mp3s by two bands/artists who are both playing tonight, right down the street from each other. If you are in Raleigh, be sure to check out the Lump Gallery benefit happening tonight with Organos , which is the solo project of Schooner bass player Maria Albani. There will also be a DJ set by Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, and a video/performance from Neill Prewitt (Yuxtapongo) with guests. This track is from her new CD, "The Limbs." The ultimate Raleigh rock reunion

The ultimate Raleigh rock reunion The accolades have been coming fast and furious on Facebook this morning about last night's COC reunion at the Pour House. The band was killer, old friend were reunited, and despite a few sore necks and throbbing heads, everyone had an awesome time. As advertised, the band played songs from "Animosity" and "Technocracy" with a few new songs in between. The band has recorded a new 7-inch, "Your Tomorrow (Parts 1 and 2)" which will be out soon on Southern Lord. Reed and Mike's side project Righteous Fool opened up. I hope they don't [...]

Announcing: The Mann's World Hopscotch Day Party!

Announcing: The Mann's World Hopscotch Day Party! On Saturday, Sept. 11, yours truly will present a Hopscotch day party at Kings with four of my favorite heavy local bands! This is going to be a free show, and will take place during the afternoon (start time isn't set, but it will definitely be done by 5:30 p.m. so you can go catch Public Enemy and the Love Language). I'm proud to announce that the line up will consist of two of my long-time favorites: Black Skies (above) and Caltrop ; plus two bands that have recently blown [...]

Weekend party favors

I had a lazy weekend that stupidly included golfing in Sunday's 101 degree heat, but I did manage to catch some rock. These videos are from two parties honoring some folks you know if you hang out at Slim's a lot. The first one, from Friday's birthday party for Slim's bartender Olivia, is the Infamous Sugar doing a very special cover song. I really wish I'd gotten video of Suge's new song, "Coke Zero," about, in his words, the sorry state of cocaine in this town. That was clearly the crowd favorite. [...]

5 questions with Woody Weatherman AND Nate from USX!

OK, there's just no question here. The show of the week (month? year?) is Saturday's C.O.C. reunion at the Pour House , featuring original members Woody Weatherman, Reed Mullin and Mike Dean. According to published reports , the band will be playing songs from "Animosity," "Technocracy" and some new stuff. They've also got some killer opening bands: Righteous Fool (Mike and Reed's band with Jason Browning), Savannah's Black Tusk who blew me away when they opened for Pentagram in May, and Western N.C. space-rock band U.S. Christmas who are kind of everywhere all of [...]

The Rosebuds release two exclusive tracks through Hopscotch

The Rosebuds from tim lytvinenko on Vimeo . Check it out: The Rosebuds have released two exclusive tracks, "Secret Life of the Rosebuds" and an AWESOME cover of "Stayin' Alive," through Hopscotch. Both tracks have been released before, and are part of the band's plan to release one archival track a week through various outlets through the rest of the year. This is in anticipation of their fifth studio album, which will be released early next year. Check out the tracks on the Hopscotch page , and see the video for "Secret Life [...]

.mp3s of the Week! Tasha-Yar and more!

Actually this post should just be called "Music of the Week" because two of these aren't .mp3s, and one of these isn't even local. That said, let's start off with a great new (to me anyway) heavy psychedelic band called Tasha-Yar . My understanding is that they former members of U.S. Christmas, and that they are from somewhere in the mountains. I thought I had a pretty good understanding of North Carolina geography, but I have no clue where Mackory Falls is. "Empty Hand" by Tasha-Yar [...]

5 questions with The Butchies! Plus more shows you need to see

5 questions with The Butchies! Plus more shows you need to see After a five-year break, Durham's legendary Queercore innovators The Butchies are reuniting this Wednesday at Cat's Cradle. The occasion? Front woman Kaia Wilson (above right; bass player Alison Martlew is left and drummer Melissa York is center) has become a ping pong goddess, and has been selected to represent the U.S. in ping pong in the upcoming Gay Games in Germany! In fact, Kaia will demonstrate her ping pong prowess at the show. Pink Flag and Tami Hart will open, and The Cuntry Kings will make an appearance too. [...]

.mp3s of the Week: Bustello, Rat Jackson and Lost in the Trees!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. It's not that there's nothing going on. In fact, tonight one of the best show's you're likely to see all summer -- Love Language, Light Pines and Shit Horse -- is happening at Cat's Cradle. I've kind of enjoyed my time away from the blog, but now I'm ready to start posting again, and to get back into it, I want to offer three great local .mp3s. First up is Bustello (pictured above) which features local luminaries Ben Clarke (Metal Flake Mother) on vocals and guitar, John Plymale (Pressure [...]

Superchunk to reissue 'No Pocky', 'On the Mouth'

The press release from Merge pretty much says it all. I will say that "No Pocky for Kitty" is probably my personal favorite Superchunk album. Superchunk's "No Pocky for Kitty" and "On the Mouth" get remastered & reissued in August! Full album streams & a free MP3 of "Skip Steps 1 & 3" available now! Merge Records will reissue Superchunk's No Pocky for Kitty and On the Mouth on CD, LP and digital download on August 17. Remastered by Jason Ward [...]

Video of Hog, Bastard Sapling and Inter Arma

Video of Hog, Bastard Sapling and Inter Arma Since Durham's Hog (above) often plays with Caltrop (one of my local favorites) I thought it possible I might like them too. Turns out I like them a lot. So much so that I'm going to check them out again tomorrow at the J uly 4 Metal BBQ at Nightlight. This is a daylong event starting at 3 p.m. so get there early! Here's video of Hog on Thursday night at Slim's. Hog opened the show, followed by Richmond's Bastard Sapling and Inter Arma , both of which shared several members. Bastard [...]

This week's cool shows: Weesefest, Yerryfest, Clang Quartet, Caltrop and much more!

One of the things I love about Raleigh is that people around here like to have big, public parties with great bands when it's their birthday. Two of the best, Joe Yerry fest and Weesefest , are happening this week, just in time to get the party started for the holiday weekend. Yay for being a state worker and having Monday off! Joe Yerry's birthday bash takes place at Slim's on Wednesday, where The Loners will allegedly play an early show. According to the Facebook event page, the band [...]

Five questions with Clang Quartet!

Five questions with Clang Quartet! The description on Clang Quartet 's Myspace pretty much says it all: "13 years of NOISE for Jesus!!!" If you know Scotty Irving, the Greensboro drummer who is the sole member of Clang Quartet, you know it sums him up too. Scotty loves some extreme music, almost as much as he loves Jesus Christ. Clang Quartet is he vehicle for expressing both. Clang Quartet will open for Lightning Bolt and In the Year of the Pig this Friday at Local 506. 1. How has Clang Quartet changed over the years? [...]

Photos and video from TRK Fest!

Photos and video from TRK Fest! Years ago I spent three weeks living on a farm in Saxapahaw, and came to the conclusion then that, despite popular belief, it's actually a hell of a lot hotter in the country than it is in a city. I thought about that Saturday at TRK Fest while witnessing several local musicians, and a whole lot of local music fans, on the verge of passing out due to heat exhaustion. Poor Ryan Gustafson (below) looked like he was just going to melt up on stage. The only good thing I can say about the heat is [...]

Five questions with Will from Trekky Records! plus more great shows this week

Five questions with Will from Trekky Records! plus more great shows this week Do you really need me to tell you why this Saturday's TRK Fest at Piedmont Biofuels in Pittsboro is the show of the week? OK, here are a few reasons: * A full day of bands, including Megafaun, Mount Moriah and Ryan Gustafson. * Awesome food vendors including Only Burger (yours truly hasn't tried them, but I see at least one Facebook update a day from one of their many rapturous fans) * A chance for those of you who are upset over the oil spill to tour Piedmont Biofuels and learn how to [...]

.mp3s of the week! Superchunk, Chatham County Line and more!

Check out "Digging for Something," a limited-edition 7-inch from Superchunk to be released July 13. Artist and musician Harrison Haynes (Les Savy Fav, Hellbender) is doing the artwork. Apparently July 13 is THE day for new releases because Chatham County Line is also releasing "Wildwood" that day on Yep Roc. Check out "Crop Comes In" from the CD. You can also check out a video for the song here . "Crop Comes In" by Chatham County Line Asheville's Saint Solitude will be at Slim's next Wednesday [...]

Five questions with The Beast! plus this week's cool shows

Five questions with The Beast! plus this week's cool shows Deftly mixing hip hop and jazz, The Beast is one of the most musically adventurous and intelligent bands in the Triangle right now. They also have a deep need to give back to their community, having taught jazz education seminars at local high schools with the N.C. Jazz Repertory Orchestra. And it must be noted that MC Pierce Freelon is the son of local jazz great Nnenna Freelon, who will collaborate with the band once again on a "jazz an hip hop mix tape" to be released this fall. [...]

.mp3s of the week! APLOD and Shit Horse

Let me tell you, having a computer die really sucks. And deciding to switch to a Mac from a PC has brought its own challenges. Thanks to Alex I once again have access to my server space and can start posting .mp3s again. I've said this before, but I really am going to try to make this a weekly occurrence. If James Brown got drunk and crashed a party at the Spahn Ranch, you might get "Twelve Horses" by Shit Horse , who might have the funniest album title ("They Shit Horses, Don't They") I've heard in [...]

This week's cool shows: Rebus Fest, Love Language opens for Phoenix and more!

This week's cool shows: Rebus Fest, Love Language opens for Phoenix and more! By now you've probably heard the big news that The Love Language will open two dates for Phoenix, including the big Koka Booth show tomorrow night in Cary. You probably won't see me at this show. While I'm mildly curious about Phoenix, I'm not $32.50 worth of curious. If someone can find me a couple of $10 tickets, I'm there. But I do congratulate LL on securing this spot. I have a feeling they'll be headlining that place before long. (Photo of Stu, above, by Jason Arthurs) And just to get you in the mood for [...]
