Theme: Anthems

I was pretty excited when I saw this theme, because who doesn't love a good old-fashioned soul-stirring, uplifting anthem? I'll start off with a band that does anthems particularly well: U2. There are of course their more well known (and overplayed) anthems like "Where the Streets Have No Name," or "Beautiful Day," but one of my more low-key favorites is " 40 ." It's a more gentle and simple anthem, but affecting nonetheless. This version is from a live concert at Red Rocks in 1983, and thus features what any good anthem requires: thousands of people singing [...]

Theme For The Week: Week 207 (February 22 to February 28)

Sorry it's late, guys, I have been ill~ In order to cheer myself up, and because 'the end of February' isn't a particularly exciting time in the general scheme of things, I want some uplifting music. I want some music that makes you want to wave banners around or drive into the sunset or scale an unscalable wall. In short, I want anthems - whatever the word 'anthem' means to you and your music collection. We are the champions. You're the voice. I hope you know I've got a chainsaw. Whatever it happens to be. :) [...]

An Unlikely Pair + Recommendations?

"You are my Home," Christine Andreas & Gilles Chiasson as Marguerite and Armand, The Scarlet Pimpernel . The odd pair here isn't Chiasson and Andreas, who give this par-for-Broadway ballad plenty of punch and color. Rather, the mismatch is between borderline-romantic lyrics and the vocalists' roles --Andreas plays Marguerite, Chiasson is Armand, her brother. The Scarlet Pimpernel has been the subject of multiple revivals and reinvisionings since the concept album first hit the [...]

Topic: Unlikely Pairings and Clever Bastards

Let's scratch unlikely, and replace it with, "uncanny" instead. Like dill pickles and maple syrup (an old Vermont tradition I am eagerly anticipating soon), many unlikely pairings prove to be unsuspected delights. I was actually thinking about this last week out dancing, where I was dismayed to not see a favorite DJ, but was pleased by his replacement, who made me stop dead once or twice when I picked up what he was mixing together; the one I remember best was when he slipped Burial's "Archangel" under Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood" quite successfully. Clever bastard. That being [...]

Unlikely Pairings

Richard Thompson - Oops! I Did It Again Recorded by a former member of Fairport Convention as part of a collection of "pop" music spanning from 1068-2001. When I first heard about this cover I listened to it purely for the comedic value, but now I actually prefer it over Britney's version. Buy 1000 Years of Popular Music . Also, there's no MP3 of this, but it's brilliant and hilarious... what happens when the story of Star Wars is told through the soundtrack of Phantom of the Opera? Darth Vader: The [...]

Odd Pairings...Continued

Odd Pairings...Continued Georgina Dobson & Cupboard Simon - The Message Don't push this elderly woman because she's close to the edge! Hey, it's tough being an old person in the city and whoever Cupboard Simon is, he must have thought her story would go well to the tune of Grandmaster Flash's hit. I wish I could've sat in on this recording session though. It almost sounds like she's being forced to do this. At one point it sounds like she's saying "this music doesn't sound quite right". All I could find out about this is at the website I found [...]

Ephemeral Mists

Ephemeral Mists Ephemeral Mists is a new musical project by composer Brett Branning (also the composer for The synthetic dream foundation & Abandoned Toys). "Moon Ritual" is the debut cd, out now on Mythical records . The sound of the project is best described as downtempo ambient new age music mixed with ethnic world musics in the vein of "Karma" era Delerium, Amethystium, and Steve Roach. Its really a very intoxicatingly beautiful creation and I sincerely recommend it to anyone into newage music styles. I'm looking forward to [...]

Unlikely Pairings: Gender Bender

"You Oughta Know" - Jonathan Coulton A beautiful cover of Alanis Morissette's scathing original, featuring Jonathan Coulton's lovely acoustic guitar work and beautiful voice... and all the pronouns intact, none of the genders changed. This queers the song in a totally shocking and awesome way, a gay man singing to his (maybe ex-gay? maybe bi?) former male lover. It's a revelation every time I listen to it. mp3 available for free at Jonathan Coulton's website! "Hot in Herre" - Jenny Owen Youngs [...]

audiography @ 2009-02-18T22:14:00 This is an odd pairing in a couple different ways. After listening to the last post of the 50 Cent polka mashup I thought, no one can beat that. I almost didn't post anything, but it reminded me of one I found recently putting together 50 Cent and Queen. I've heard a lot of covers of Queen and many rap songs sampling Queen so I'm also including some other variations on Queen music. Just to show the wide spectrum of musical artists which Queen appeals to. Freddie vs. Fitty [...]

50 Bluebells

50 Bluebells Unlikely Pairings seems like the perfect category for a mashup. And this is one of the most unlikely I could think of... Polka legend Jimmy Shand and rap artist 50 Cent. People have told me that this mashup doesn't have the best execution, but I don't really care, as the absurdity of the sound alone carries it. Theme for the Week

Theme For The Week: Week 206 (February 15 to February 21) Nothing makes me happier than when I hear about two completely different people working together and I say "WTF?" and it turns out to be freakin' amazing! Bing Crosby singing Christmas carols with David Bowie? A punk band decides to add a string section to their new album? A movie star and Tom Waits songs? What are some of your favorite (and least favorite!) unlikely pairings??? Unlikely Pairings Quality over quantity, kids. [...]

Sexiest Songs

This theme is right up my alley. I have so many songs to choose from. Depeche Mode - Only When I Lose Myself - The Singles 86>98 As you should know by now I'm a huge Depeche Mode fan. I was hooked immediately when I heard this song. Dave Gahan has one ofthe sexiest voices to me. His voice is even sexier interpreting the words Martin wrote for this track. Sexiest Songs

Seeing as I've posted here by mistake, might as well do it intentionally. So sexy songs, yes? I'm more of a romantic, but I managed to find a few things: I'm warped. A song that has the line "Mommy, can I go out and kill tonight" still somehow screams sex to me and the beat and hook just goes, well, places... Rippin Kitten by Golden Boy. Buy here . Sexiest Songs? Hmm...

What I consider SEXY depends entirely on my mood at the time. And I have a lot of moods. I have many other tracks I could put up here, but I'm rebuilding my music collection after a crash. Here's what I have so far... You know when you wake in the morning from a sexy dream and the sun is almost on you, just enough for you to feel it's warmth and your blood starts pounding and your attention wanders to your happy tingly bits in and [...]
