Gloriously well-styled magic moving commercial from Roisin Murphy . I've got a shit ton of new art I need to scan + present to you people. Pretty sure you'll dig it, and failing that, I'll convince you I'm an effin' genius anyway. Cuz that's how we do.
I owe you crazy kids some art, and I've been slacking there. I'm prepping for a lot that happens in May, and so I'm working on working diligently, breaking up a shit ton of work down into manageable parcels. Here's a list of what's happening in the near future: Pink-a-Palooza Auction benefiting breast cancer awareness. Maneki-Neko 01, 2009, Ink on archival paper affixed to pressboard, 83x103. Please contact sw(at)secretworm(dot)com for pricing. This piece turned out well, but the delicate line work along the sides was ridiculously time-consuming. Anyhow, I love the lil' fella, and I'm almost certainly going to do more. No time to really really, so enjoy today's Sonic Fix : Darren Keen - Rainbow

Matryoshka 08, 2009, Ink on archival paper affixed to pressboard, 5″x7″. Contact sw(at)secretworm(dot)com for purchasing info. The last matryoshka girl I'm doing for a while, and she turned out pretty rad. I'm really digging the way that the patterns play with and against one another. Another thing I'm sorta loving it that the flaws are evident, but that they add to the overall look, lending a charm that I couldn't easily fabricate using digital tools. Today's Sonic Fix is from a lovely Swedish band referencing one of my [...]

Matryoshka 07, 2009, Ink on archival paper affixed to pressboard, 5″x7″. Contact sw(at)secretworm(dot)com for purchasing info. Last night I remembered another tangential reference to matryoshka dolls . Wikipedia provides a concise explanation of Rebis , a character from Grant Morrison's groundbreaking run on Doom Patrol (emphasis mine): The Negative Spirit later leaves Vostok and returns to Trainor, where it reveals itself to be amoral, intelligent, and capable of speech. Trainor pleads with it to leave him alone, but it forcefully merges itself with [...]

Matryoshka 06, 2009, Ink on archival paper affixed to pressboard, 53x73. Contact sw(at)secretworm(dot)com for purchasing info. Another daily illustration. Matryoshkas (matryoshkae?) remind me of my grandmother and nod towards my Russian heritage. I think I may do a couple more of these girls before I retire it for a while. Not that I don't like doing them, but I don't want it to become stale. I'm liable to return to them at some point, but I also want to knock out some sugar skulls, some daruma dolls, some monoko-neki. Wait and [...]

Matryoshka 05, 2009, Ink on archival paper affixed to pressboard, 53x73. Contact sw(at)secretworm(dot)com for purchase info. So I did four matryoshkas for my show at R.Coury Fine Art , and they were among the best received of the collection. I knew then that I had hit on some vein of insight, something that appealed to people's sense of "oh cool!", and I planned to mine it for all it was worth. So this is the fifth, and I'm pretty pleased with how our girl turned out. Between start [...]

Come on out, y'all. The show ought to be pretty bad ass. I'm drawing alien Bond Girls and astronauts! Prepare to be dazzled as Cargo Cult makes live art for real!
I've been re-thinking how I make art, how to sell it, where to go next. Some things I've come up with: 01. I've learned to cut my costs dramatically, learned to work faster. Taking a month to crank out a single digital piece is all fine and well, but then I'm losing money to get it done. I still incorporate software tools, but the actual impact is more subtle these days. 02. A bunch of little pieces that sell are worth more a single big one sitting in my house. In a down economy, [...]

Art happening event X is best described in its Facebook Group : The intention of X is to establish a LIVE and ONLINE art happening that brings artists and creatives out of their studios and into the public art collaborative, allowing the environment to affect and impact their work and process. Alrightie then. My friends and I have formed Cargo Cult ...remember that?...and we're painting/drawng/etching/pastin g our way to something awesome in the period of four hours. It oughta be rad, kids. Come on out to see! [...]

Sugar 04/Snake Eyes, 2009, Ink on archival paper affixed to pressboard, 83x83, available for sale through R.Coury Fine Arts . New layout, and updates on the regular. Sidebar is the start, and I'm working on a new skin for the 'Show. This week is sick busy, between work, pimping out my two shows (WTF?!?!) this weekend, and trying to make time for Skips. So while I may not start regularly putting it out there again regularly until next week, I'm trying to work out a whole new approach to how I work, how [...]

I'm in love with this space, and my friend Jill Hackney has been very gracious is hosting my work. You should come, and you should bring interesting friends.

Sugar 04/Snake Eyes, 2009, Ink on paper affixed to pressboard, 83x83. Available for purchase through the R.Coury Fine Art Gallery . More new art can be found on my flickr, which I almost exclusively use as a portfolio. Check it out here. I've been working with a more loose, more simple style lately-pretty straightforward illustrations done in pen, quickly to keep the energy that inspired it in the first place. I'm working on some new ideas to keep the whole thing fresh. Among them is the [...]

Digital tomfoolery, using mashed-up stock splatters and a series of competing halftones for depth. The phrase is lifted from a Justice song. LMK whatcha think. P.S. I have a ton of new stuff I need to scan + update, but I haven't made time. This is not the new art I mentioned a few days back. Perhaps tomorrow...who knows? Stay tuned.
Yes, I'm thiiiiiiiiiis close to finishing some bitchin' new artfaggotry. When I do, the fifteen of you who still read the 'Show will be the first to see it. Gimme til Monday. Then prepare to be dazzled. -sw
01. Made pretty awesome headway on a grouping of pieces yesterday, deciding to call the character St. Teresa, more or less after the notions I had mashed together about two different saints: Therese of Lisieux and Teresa of Avila . I often confuse the two despite knowing that they are entirely different figures in the Catholic canon. Saints absolutely fascinate me, as they're religious proto-superheroes. 02. This mixed media stuff I'm working through right now isn't a permanent departure from digital work. I still love so-called new media, and I'm still working on some stuff [...]
01. The reception for my Four Characters mixed media art show is tonite. One more time: 6-9 pm, Dahlak (1771 U St NW WDC). I'm showing off, predictably, four characters: The Atomic Heavyweight, King on a Shoestring, Luchador and Elsa Charm, Agent of A.N.A.R.C.H.Y. Lots of rad people signed up to show via Facebook, and so I'm guessing it'll be pretty effin' awesome. DJ and friend A-Ron will be spinning sweet, sweet music for your earholes. 02. Sean + Marvin + Keenan + Jameson = so hung over I can hardly stand [...]

01. Artist and friend Sherill Anne Gross made the above Pinup , which incorporates more than 6000 pieces of hand-cut paper for the shag carpeting. Obsessive but awesome. 02. Recent Twitters, in no particular order: @mattfraction : " my career has more fathers than anna nicole smith's baby." @secretworm: " Hello, plate of extra crispy bacon! Good-bye unclogged arteries!" 03. Reception for my Four Characters show is tomorrow. Many of the cool kids will be making an appearance. Big ups to The New [...]

01. Pasted up 9 wood panels with book and magazine fragments. Curing overnight so that I can paint and scratch and draw across their surface. 02. Definite ideas for one foursome: working title is now Nervetown. Let's see if that sticks, though how I work means I've already got titles for the pieces: Lacunae Filled With Dust , Shaft of Long Bones , Weak Acids and Alkalis , and Heller, Meaning Lighter . Pretty sure I have this locked down, meaning it ought to bang itself out quickly. Used An Atlas [...]

Flyer pop for my show this Wednesday. You ought to come out.
