I had high hopes for this piece. As I finally undertook it, though, I realized how monumentally boring this task was. Suffice it to say that 2008 was yet another year where the lions share of critical kudos went to completely safe, predictable and bland music. Absolutely nothing pictured below did anything to change or challenge the artistic paradigm in which they operated. Yes, that includes Lil Wayne. There's many, many more that could've been displayed here but I honestly got tired of grabbing album covers for them all. I could've filled a [...]

Driving To Midnight Mass On Christmas Eve Five-thousand million years ago, this earth lay heaving in a mass of rocks and fire Wasting, burdened with its emptiness Tonight, when arthropods and worms and sponges have given way to dinosaurs And dinosaurs to working, wandering apes Homo erectus have given way to sapiens, and he to Homo sapiens sapiens (alias Paddy Mack) Look down on Dublin from the hills around And lights could be a million Christmas trees Still firs standing, while in the sky a [...]

I've been slammed busy for the past couple of weeks but now with nothing, really, to do except keep myself busy with various projects I want to do (as opposed to have-to-do) we're back. As Mike Turner would say, this is an announcement of an announcement. Around his time of year, every year, without fail, everyone makes up "best of" lists which tend to be more of a shopping guide than any real critical assessment of the records from the past 12 months. Because I'm cranky and tend to fall regularly into [...]

And I do. Today is particularly important because my favorite Athens event of the year is happening tonight: The Annual Athens Christmas Parade! (OK, yeah, the city gov. calls it the "parade of lights" but no one else does.) If you live in town and have seen it then you know why I love it. if you've never seen it and you're in Athens, or close enough to get here, please come and see our town do it up right. High School marching bands, rescued dogs, a garbage truck, church/civic floats and more. The [...]

I like things that are cute. I like things that are sweet. Particularly, I like sweet pop songs about nice things. Honest, I do . That said, let me talk about a band who embodies every single bad thing that could possibly ever be said about indie-pop, Twee-pop or whatever you want to call that particular brand of over-the-edge, self-consciously cutesy garbage that is the musical equivalent of a college upper classman's etchings and a bottle of cheap red wine. Their name is The Boy Least Likely To . [...]

As soon as I have something to say I'll say it. I know it's been boring around here. Oh, yeah, pretty much all the MP3s here are dead, dead, dead. Dig around and look if you want but I wouldn't waste my time. There will be more in the future but I'm not re-uploading anything.
Started a landslide in my ego Looked from the outside to the world I left behind. -U2 "A Day Without Me"

Home is where I want to be But I guess I'm already there... Guess that this must be the place I can't tell one from another -Talking Heads"This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)"

Someone's boring me. I think it's me. -Dylan Thomas

Come closer and see See into the trees... Suddenly I stop But I know it's too late I'm lost in a forest All alone The girl was never there It's always the same I'm running towards nothing Again and again and again and again -The Cure "A Forest" (1980)

Today is Veterans Day . For one freakin' day out of the year please ignore the anarchist tendencies of 24HPP and thank your lucky stars so few have done so much for so many. Yes, this is the first post in a week. No, we're not going off line or turning political. Besides, Veterans Day isn't political. Or, at least, it shouldn't be. It's human. Call a soldier you know. Give to a charity . Think about the issues. Whatever you do, don't let the day pass unnoticed.

We think we know what we're doing We don't pull the strings. It's all in the past now Money changes everything. -The Brains-"Money Changes Everything" (1979) No matter how good people feel about "Joe The Plumber" being totally discredited the ice cold fact of the matter is that there are literally millions of real Joes in the United States. They've been screwed by the Democrats and screwed by the Republicans (and those are just two very easy to find examples). Yet both parties still claim the [...]
And here we are. With only one shopping day left until a new POTUS is chosen. The anxiety people feel every time this rolls around is palpable. Nerves are shot; people get irritable. I consciously didn't pay attention to this presidential race until a few months ago. No way I was going to spend another 15 months or so following a political race. Don't even attempt to get on my case about this. I used to be a total news/political junkie until I finally woke up to the fact that you could take almost any headline from the [...]

Yes, it's Canadian MTV. Bill Grundy, anyone? I still love this and I don't care what any of you goofs say.

1) It's high time for bands to dump MySpace. It's a total garbage can with the most worthless "messaging" application ever. Terrible. Just truly awful. I always feel bad directing people to a band's MySpace account because I know they'll have to sit and wait forever for the damn thing to load. 2) Bands, please list your first AND last names on anything you would normally put your name on. If you're looking for press this will help you immensely. Trust me. Oh, and, you know, people who buy your record might actually like it to. [...]
Yes, an advertisement for myself. Well, specifically myself and Mike Turner . We operate as Buddies Helping Buddies (see box to right-->). This is just an announcement that tickets for Silver Apples are on sale NOW. The show happens At The Caledonia Lounge here in Athens on Saturday, November 15 . A. Armada and Grails (Portland, OR) are also on the bill. Do [...]

This past Saturday, before a crowd of no more than 15 people, the best new (or, rather, new to me) Atlanta band I've heard this year blew me away. A total blend of post punk, poppy new wave and hip hop, they're kind of all over the place but they make it work to a really thrilling effect.(And this is coming from someone who is, in general, bored to the teeth with hip hop). The tracks below do about half justice to the bands live show. They're called Grand Prize Winners From Last Year [...]

Loneliness is like a disease Triggers off my sense of unease I was lonely until I found the reason the reason was me... -Felt-"Penelope Tree" (1983) MP3 : Yo La Tengo-The Summer (1990) MP3 : Richard & Linda Thompson-Walking On A Wire (1982) MP3 : A-Ha-The Sun Always Shines On TV (1985) MP3 : [...]
