Artist Profile + Free MP3: Jeremy Messersmith

Artist Profile + Free MP3: Jeremy Messersmith Born in St.Paul and musically bred in Minneapolis, singer/songwriter Jeremy Messersmith is a Twin Cities artist through and through. Since his 2005 debut with The Alcatraz Kid , his sweet voice and confessional style have earned him comparisons to Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith, but Messersmith brings his own mix of wonder and wit to the Beatles-infused melodies he creates. LimeWire Store caught up with J.M. on some rare down time in the Silver City to talk about his latest release, The Reluctant Graveyard , and found out just [...]

Album Review: Fantastic Mr Fox – ‘Evelyn EP’ (Black Acre)

Album Review: Fantastic Mr Fox – ‘Evelyn EP’ (Black Acre) The buzz on this Brit producer has been swirling in the blogosphere and the four pulsing, hypnotic, nouveau electro soul grooves here should keep the chatter going strong. The awesomely named Fantastic Mr. Fox (aka Stephen Gomberg) builds densely-layered digital symphonies concocted with sparse, impassioned vocal snippets, snappy drums, creative percussion, bold synth lines, and funky bass. "Over" shifts from minimal lounge dirge to R & B to digi-soul to space funk, thanks to a seamless blending of effects-heavy female vocal cuts, dusty percussion, and deep synth riffs. "Sepia Song" is a bouncy, infectious ditty that uses housey vocal cuts [...]

Album Review: Simply Red – ‘Songs of Love’ (Simplyred.com)

The 2010 Songs of Love compilation arrived just in time to help celebrate the career of Simply Red as Mick Hucknall's stellar blue-eyed soul band began mounting its farewell tour. Hucknall had been channeling classic '60s and '70s R&B influences through contemporary pop sensibilities since 1984 and, as Songs of Love shows, Simply Red built up an impressive musical legacy over the years. Not only does this collection hit the highlights of the band's career, it also offers up what will most likely be the last new recordings we'll ever hear from them. Those who have [...]

Album Review: Surf City – ‘Kudos’ (Fire Records)

Album Review: Surf City – ‘Kudos’ (Fire Records) New Zealand's Surf City used to be known as Kill Surf City (they shortened their moniker after finding out there were a couple other so-named bands), and while that Jesus and Mary Chain reference is apropos at times (like on the eight-minute "Icy Lakes"), the band has more in common with their Kiwi heritage. Even more than their self-titled EP from 2008, Kudos shows the young four-piece tapping into the Flying Nun lineage of The Clean and The Chills that no doubt had a hand in inspiring them into being in the first place. And while there are [...]

13 Unitentionally Spooky Covers

13 Unitentionally Spooky Covers Anyone can decorate their album with skulls and demons, but really how scary is that? It takes a particularly demented talent to create artwork that is scary on a much subtler level. As such, we've picked out 13 album covers that — either consciously or subconsciously — are disturbing. Joong-Han Chung- Do You Want the Elephant Music I think I'll pass, dude! [...]

Slash Walks in with an Overweight Madonna: A Bobby Bare Jr. Rock ‘n’ Roll Halloween

Slash Walks in with an Overweight Madonna: A Bobby Bare Jr. Rock ‘n’ Roll Halloween In his 44 years, Bobby Bare Jr. has already done a lot. He was nominated for a Grammy when he was just eight years-old, fronted the successful alt-rock outfit Bare Jr. in his 20s and has been making poignant, country-tinged records with his Young Criminals' Starvation League for the past decade. No doubt he's encountered some pretty strange scenes. He recently stopped by LimeWire to discuss his new record, A Storm, A Tree, My Mother's Head , and play a few songs. One of those songs, "Rock 'n' Roll Halloween" describes a surreal scene at an Atlanta [...]

A Halloween Playlist

A Halloween Playlist Rock 'n' roll has long been deemed "devil's music" by the puritanically minded, and while that may be a bit of a stretch, most rock 'n' rollers have long known that being bad is far more fun than being good. Countless bands have embraced demonic imagery and played on related dark notions. As such, there's no better way to celebrate Halloween than with a soundtrack of fiendish tunes. (And we don't mean hokey stuff like "The Monster Mash.") As such, we've put together a list of 12 songs good enough to wake the dead this weekend. [...]

Video: Violens- “Violent Sensation Descends”

Video: Violens- “Violent Sensation Descends” With Halloween upon us, Brooklyn three-piece Violens have released a spooky new video. The clip for "Violent Sensation Descends" was directed by Alejandro Cardenas and is vaguely reminiscent of '70s Italian horror films. It is the first video to be released in promotion for Amoral , Violens' full-length debut, which was recently released by Friendly Fire Recordings. Since forming in 2007, Violens had only released an EP, but performances with Grizzly Bear, Deerhunter and other non-animalian bands earned the band good press and word-of-mouth, making the long-in-coming album eagerly anticipated.

Free MP3: Crystal Castles and Robert Smith- “Not In Love”

Free MP3: Crystal Castles and Robert Smith- “Not In Love” Canadian electro duo Crystal Castles and The Cure's Robert Smith now share more than just a love for heavily applied black eyeliner and a record label. (Crystal Castles' latest, Crystal Castles , is on the Fiction label, which began by releasing Cure records more than 30 years ago.) Smith recently contributed vocals to a new version of "Not In Love," a song by '80s Canadian new wavers Platinum Blonde that Crystal Castles covered for their self-titled album. It's a big improvement over the 1983 original, but don't take our word for it, hear for yourself [...]

Sun Airway Release Debut Record

Sun Airway Release Debut Record Philadelphia duo Sun Airway dropped their debut album, Nocturne of Exploded Chandelier , today. The former members of the Quaker City indie group the A-Sides have been working on this album for roughly three years, and it's filled to the brim with lush, blissed-out pop music. A sort of stoned U2 with drum machines and ethereal keyboards, Sun Airway are sure to please fans of the Animal Collective paradigm. Nocture never strays much from it, with all of its ten tracks feeling more or less made from the same mold, but maybe that [...]

Album Review: Groove Armada – ‘White Light’ (Om)

Album Review: Groove Armada – ‘White Light’ (Om) Remix albums are typically hit-or-miss affairs intended for the hardcore fan. However, Groove Armada has taken the concept to the next level with White Light , a nine-track album featuring remixes and alternate versions of songs from their flawless fifth album, Black Light , and a stellar new electro-pop tune, "1980." The jagged pop of "Warsaw," featuring Empire of the Sun's Nick Littlemore (and newcomer Saint Saviour on the Black Light version) morphs into a squelchy, euphoric rave tune that channels The Chemical Brothers' "Hey Boy Hey Girl" and comes close to trumping the original version [...]

Remembering Porter Wagoner

Remembering Porter Wagoner Three years ago today, the world of country music became a little bit dimmer with the passing of Porter Wagoner at the age of 80. A fixture in the business for over five decades, his career might surprise you. While he was definitely from the old school, with his trademark Nudie suits and honky-tonk sound, there was also a bit of a rebel streak to the West Plains, MO native. He was definitely not afraid to do things that hadn't been done before. In 1960, Wagoner began a weekly syndicated TV series that was one of the first of [...]

Raul Malo Brings ‘Sinners & Saints’ To NYC

Raul Malo Brings ‘Sinners & Saints’ To NYC What with the passing of icons like Doug Sahm and Freddy Fender, it often seems like there's just not enough Tex-Mex music to go around these days - at least not that gets beyond Texas. So it's heartening to find that even though he's a Floridian by birth, former Mavericks frontman Raul Malo holds the sounds of that classic Tex-Mex blend of country, R&B, conjunto , and rock & roll close to his heart on his new album Sinners & Saints . And on Friday, October 22nd, he brought those sounds to the heart of New [...]

What Should I Buy This Week? [New Releases for 10/26]

Yes, we know Halloween is coming up, and we probably should have filled your musical trick-or-treat basket with calendar-appropriate sonic goodies; perhaps some death metal and goth offerings. But we don't want to scare you away, either, so instead, this week's batch of new releases includes some electro-jazz adventurers, a rowdy cowpunk gang, an Americana queen, and a bunch of brainy-but-fun post-rockers. Trust us, the combination will provide you with ear candy aplenty. Tumbledown - Empty Bottle If you get charged [...]
