I think we woke the baby up. Evil Nine (feat. Aesop Rock) - Crooked from You Can Be Special Too first posted November 21, 2007

Heard enough about Sleepy Sun from me lately? Hope not, cuz their new album isn't even out yet. Here's the first peek at Fever (out June 1 on ATP ) - you can and should catch em at Great American Music Hall on June 10, afore they hit the US and Continental roads and don't quit till September. Sleepy Sun - Open Eyes from Fever so good! [...]

Hey, remember how excited I was about the state of music in the city after the Vanderslice/Honeycomb show ? I'm still that excited, for similar reasons. Kacey Johansing, who was one of the mental-talented folks performing in Honeycomb that night, has an album (Many Seasons ) coming out next week on SF's very own Porto Franco Records (a local label with a great story ). San Francisco's always had its share of fine musicians, but there's not always the sense of it all coming together that I [...]

I've been doing a novena over at Mission Dolores for there to be more Summertime Jams, and it just paid off. Sleigh Bells' 2009 demo/CD-R/whateva-you-call-it- these-days was the summertime jam of Winter 09/10 and Spring 2010, so it's nice to get an official release just in time for summer. The demo (sometimes referred to by one of the track titles: 2HELLWU ) sounded more or less like seven different versions of the same song, and there's 100% nothing wrong with that. Ask the Ramones or Johnny Cash. Sleigh Bells' blown-out sound isn't fudged with [...]

Here's a sweet Bay Area Shoutout gem that I heard on The Heavy Light Show . Yeah, sometimes you have to hear about these local gems from the East Coast, but at least it's not Br**klyn. Rodger Collins - Foxy Girls In Oakland (available on a couple of compilations, including Bay Area Funk, Vol. 1 ) Rodger put out a new album, Through My Eyes , just a few years ago, and there's yodeling. That should be all I need to say [...]

Good news, children! New Blitzen Trapper! And the best news of all is that it sounds just like Blitzen Trapper, even when there's a string section. The bad news? That one of my white-whale bands has their tour taking them straight from LA to the High Sierra festival in Quincy, with no Bay Area stop in between. They've got a little room after those dates, though, so maybe if we ask nice. Blitzen Trapper - Heaven And Earth from Destroyer Of The Void (out June [...]

Señor Bassnectar is a known metal head (in addition to being the only other person I know who knows anything about Christian grindcore - Mortification rules!), so, hot off the presses, here we have the two great tastes that taste great together: Metallica - Seek And Destroy (Bassnectar Remixxx) Our boy is at Mezzanine next Saturday the 15th. Tix ain't cheap, but you can save service fees by getting em at the Independent box office.

Do they still make Summertime Jams? I can't think of anything except maybe "Crown On The Ground" that might qualify right now, but that's not even the same sort of jam. I want something that'll cause smiles from bars to bar mitzvahs. I mentioned this when I first posted this song, but I can't ever let this song go without remarking that this song about nostalgia, drinking, smoking weed, and putting women in their place is the DOLITTLE THEME. ’Cause I can turn you, learn you, and burn you up. Give me a cup, sit down, and [...]

Some local love today for our own dear Antonette Goroch, who'll be taking her show on the road to Europe later this month. The triumphant and exhausted homecoming gig is July 15 at the Hemlock . AntonetteG & The Golden Boys - My Horseshoe available on a sweet white 73 from Rodent Records , or on the album Pretty Pictures through itunes . http://antonettegoroch.com http://www.myspace.com/antonet tekg
Joanna Newsom doesn't do many TV appearances (as if being the finest songwriter of her generation weren't reason enough to admire her), so here's a couple o' special treats: "Soft As Chalk" and "'81."
Garotes Suecas - Codinome Dinamite available on a 73 from American Dust http://www.myspace.com/garotas suecas

Sometimes you have a new favorite song and it turns out you just missed the chance to see it performed live. Other times, you just super luck-out. Cheers to Cate Le Bon for her set of quiet and gripping songs last night, including the song that won't leave my head, "Shoeing The Bones." I just posted that one Thursday, and you'll be getting it again on my year-end mix for sure, but let's take the time to listen once more. Cate Le Bon - Shoeing The Bones from [...]

Don't it all just fit together sometimes? I heard today's Vedge for the first time last week, on a compilation from the excellent fishing/music/birding/cake-bak ing site Caught By The River . Travis Wammack - Don't Cry No More Wasn't until I was doing a little research that I realized that Travis was the man behind the confounding/amazing "Scratchy," as heard for the past two Friday nights on The Heavy Light Show . Normally, I'd just stream the audio here, [...]

Here come the warm jets of more great music, accompanied by my befuddlement: LCD Soundsystem: This Is Happening Being a great band is one thing, but I'm trying to figure out why LCD Soundsystem is more significant than that. It might be the wisdom and perspective, two things you don't get out of most danceable acts, or out of most younger bands. At 40, James Murphy's been around long enough to see how things go in the world, learn to effectively express himself, and know that sometimes [...]
Everybody out of the pool! Holy Fuck play the Independent on June 8. Excited yet?

I have a deep and abiding love for radio, which is why I can't really listen to it very often. So when there's actual, for-reals good radio - oh, my stars and arches, I gotta shout it out! Friend of the show and beloved human being Ida Hakkila's on the air, bringing the good stuff to you Friday nights on Woodstock's WDST . Ida plays the kind of variety we like here at Hello Vegetables - Deerhoof followed by Nazareth followed by Tom Tom Club followed by Chuck Berry followed by White Denim followed [...]
Holy moley, dear hearts, our own local sweetie Bassnectar's become a bona fide bass prophet, bringing the Good Word to the people nonstop and making them lose their minds: We don't see him round these parts as much as we used to, so it oughta be re-damn-dic at his hometown gig Saturday 5/15 at Mezzanine . Dress to sweat. And to make friends. Here's his latest, Timestretch : ... and here he is dropping his brand new remix of "Seek And Destroy" on an [...]

Mariee Sioux - Wizard Flurry Home from Faces In The Rocks first posted May 15, 2008 Mariee performs at the Hemlock on Thursday, May 6. http://www.myspace.com/mariees ioux

It's a banner day around here when I hear a new song I like this much, and I love being able to share it with you. I'm going to let this song's simplicity and beauty speak for itself, but if you're like me you're going to want to catch Welsh singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon performing solo at Bottom of the Hill this Monday (5/3). Looks like she's on first (9PM), so no excuses, early risers. Cate Le Bon - Shoeing The Bones from Me Oh My [...]
This ridiculous-sweet track from Fool's Gold's 2009 debut was a close second to their "Surprise Hotel" for making the end-of-the-year mix. Nowadays I listen to it more often than any of their others. Fool's Gold was one of the best shows I saw last year, and I can't recommend going to see them enough. They're playing an all-night Shavuot party at the California Academy of Sciences on 5/15. Portlanders (THIS MEANS YOU) get 'em at the Doug Fir on 5/31.
