Okay if you haven't been completely dominating Steven Colbert's bandwidth for the last eight hours or so there is something wrong with you. Why? Because as many of you know the Flaming Lip's new album Embryonic is streaming on ColbertNation.com in its entirety, and will be until Monday night. That means you should hurry and listen as many times as possible. The Lip's also performed a convincing version of "Convinced of the Hex" on Colbert last night. I hope they add quite a few of these new songs to [...]

I hope everyone had a great Labor day, and got plenty of rest. We're all going to need it as the next week will likely involve a rather exhausting revisit of the entire Beatle's catalog. Of course you can't possibly be expected to listen to the Beatles all the time, that would just be ridiculous. Thank God for The Beatles: Rock Band . This way we can still focus on the Beatles during our leisure time. Despite the internet being completely dominated by all things Beatles there were plenty of [...]
Goner Record's Box Elders will be playing the Conservatory in Oklahoma City this Friday (September 4th). The band recently released their debut album entitled Alice and Friends , oddly enough the album was named after the group's favorite Korean Vegan BBQ. The groups sound can be described as fuzzy and lo-fi, while drenched in extremely infectious pop hooks. It's described as being similar to that of King Kahn and his Shrines , which can only be a compliment. Anyways they are playing this Friday and everyone in the [...]

Welcome to SDM's New Tuesday. Typically we try and team up with our friends at Hypeful and bring you the week's best new album releases. Things have been somewhat inactive over there for awhile, so we will go ahead and go it alone. This week I can personally recommend David Bazan's solo debut LP, Curse Your Branches. The album is a must hear. I'm curious to hear the new Drive-By Trucker 's rarities disc as well as Datarock's Red. As always, I'm not expecting much from [...]

Here's some good news for all you Pedro the Lion fans. David Bazan will be releasing his first full length album under his own name. The new album is entitled Curse Your Branches and will be available for purchase September 1st on Barsuk Records . I received a promo of this the other day and instantly fell in love. This album has not left my all week. The highlight of the album for me is "Harmless Sparks" but there isn't a song on it that I feel inclined to skip. [...]

The complete FunFunFunFest lineup has finally been revealed and it was well worth the wait. Some of the highlights for me are: Of Montreal, Yeasayer, Why?, Atlas Sound, Times New Viking, No Age, Destroyer, The Cool Kids, Neon Indian, and King Kahn and the BBQ Show just to name a few. This might be my favorite festival because it is so diverse, but so chill at the same time. You're guaranteed to stumble upon a new band by just walking across the park. Everyone who loves festivals should try and make it to this one. Feel free [...]

I apologize for not getting this "New Release Post" up the last couple of weeks, but things have been pretty hectic. Anyways this week's new release list is a bit short, but it's not lacking in quality. Of the album's I've listened too I can strongly recommend Mew's No More Stories... , Soulsaver's Broken and Blitzen Trapper's Black River Killer EP . I'd also love to get my hands on Woody Guthrie's My Dusty Road box set; it includes four discs and they come packaged in [...]

I was recently introduced to San Juan, Puerto Rico's Davila 666 by a couple of friends. They initially described them as, "Puerto Rican Black Lips - and they sing in Spanish." Say no more, at this point I was sold. As soon as I got to a computer I started streaming their songs on MySpace and later purchased their self-titled U.S. debut on emusic . These guys come at you with some intense Spanish-language garage pop complete with jangly tambourines, infectious pop hooks, and super sweltering guitar riffs. They're defiantly a [...]

Every week we team up with our friends at Hypeful (although they haven't been participating much lately) to bring you the week's best new album releases. Check out the new releases, album art, and streams after the jump… The Fruit Bats - The Ruminant Band [...]

Thanks to our occasional contributors, Peter and Sara, for this great Starlight Mints review. Uh oh, another post by those glory hounds in Portland, OR. One of the things we miss about Oklahoma is getting to see the Starlight Mints . Seeing that they had released a new album, we hoped they would make a stop in Portland for a concert… and they did! We have seen them in venues around Oklahoma, but this was our first time seeing them away from their native land, on a full-blown tour. The [...]

Paste Magazine has compiled a list of their favorite R.E.M songs for us to enjoy argue. Actually their list is pretty solid, aside from "Nightswimming" not being in the top spot. I've always had a soft spot for this song; in fact it is one of my all time favorites. Your favorite R.E.M. song aside, a list like this really puts into perspective how great they have been throughout their nearly 30 year career. Head over to Paste to view the actual list and stream all the songs. [...]

Every week we team up with our friends at Hypeful (although they haven't been participating much lately) to bring you the week's best new album releases. The big name albums are noticably missing from this week for the most part, but that doesn't mean there isn't some great music out there. Check out the new releases, album art, mp3's and streams after the jump... [...]
We all know Embryonic is due sometime this year (hopefully sooner than later) and we've probably all heard the three Ep tracks. We've all discussed how kick ass these new tracks are going to sound live and dreamed of hearing them in that context. Now's are chance. Check out the video footage from "Conviniced of the Hex" and "Silver Trembling Hands" from last weekend's Pitchfork Music Festival. Click here to view the embedded video. Aside from possibly being the longest post title ever this might also be one of the best things we've had the privilege of posting. This is easily one of my favorite Flips songs, and one I never thought I'd ever see played live. It is always kind a given that they aren't going to play this little gym for whatever reason, and we've all come to terms with that. Before the song Wayne says they played it once before in 1999, but will never play [...]

God bless this man. I especially like how at he takes a break from his heroics to talk shit on me at the 1:45 mark. (Photo © Melani Brown) Ready for a new Menomena album? Me too, but it looks like we will have to wait a bit longer. To tide us over Menomena's Brent Knopf has served up a wonderful little album entitled Intuit under the moniker Ramona Falls . Brent dubbed the project Ramona falls after a childhood hiking trail on Mt. Hood. The project also saw Brent collaborating extensively with musicians in Portland and New York. Some noteworthy collaborators include: members of The Helio [...]
