dRES-Wild Produce Homeboy Sandman. L.E.G.A.C.Y. Members of Tanya Morgan. Guilty Simpson. You can't ask for a hipper, cooler, and more lyrically creative cast than that. THE GREATEST COMICS OF ALL TIME: Animal Man #19-26

THE GREATEST COMICS OF ALL TIME: Animal Man #19-26 I am by no means a person who says that Grant Morrison can do no wrong. I don't even think his entire Animal Man run reaches the "brilliant" level. The first five issues, yes, were unlike anything that came before. And the eight issues I am reviewing today: Revolutionary. But in the middle act, it did lag a little bit. But today I am here to praise Grant's Animal Man, not bury it. And you kind of need to read all 26 issues to get the full impact of this last arc. At the risk of [...]

LEIF(kolt) & Dusty Nix-Nothing for the Vultures (EP)

LEIF(kolt) & Dusty Nix - Nothing For The Vultures (Official Video)
This one is just weird. It's gritty electronica hip hop with rapper LEIF(kolt) who tends to spit, growl and hiss more than rap, and San Diego producer Dusty Nix. Get the EP as a digital download here . Here's a vid of the best cut off the EP.

WATCHMEN (BEGINS) AND OTHER COMIC NEWS-OF-THE-WEEK

WATCHMEN (BEGINS) AND OTHER COMIC NEWS-OF-THE-WEEK Duh. The headline is that 25 years after-the-fact, DC finally decided to snatch the money off the table. Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen is the bestselling graphic novel of all time, and there's good reason for it: It's a piece of art with mystery, politics, philosophy, and (of course) action and violence, told using characters with depth and weight. So why do prequels and fuck that all up? Simple. $$$ Yeah, there's a lot of talent attached to the seven 4-issue minis that will each focus on a particular Watchman, but I can't [...]

OCEAN CITY DEFENDER-The Golden Hour (EP)

OCEAN CITY DEFENDER-The Golden Hour (EP) Ocean City Defender is distributing their new EP on Bandcamp at the "Name Your Price" rate (which includes, of course, zero bucks). If there was a category of music called "indie 1980s," it would fit. The mellow waves flow like Simple Minds, New Order (but smoother), Yaz, etc. Good stuff! The Golden Hour by Ocean City Defender

MOON KNIGHT ENDS AGAIN

MOON KNIGHT ENDS AGAIN As a kid, I loved (adored!) Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz's Moon Knight book. It was absolute dark-hero bliss, and everything I wanted Batman to be but, at the time, what Batman simply wasn't. Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev's Moon Knight book is at least the seventh "reboot" of the title since the first one, and now this one is ending at #12. I haven't loved this run, but I haven't hated it, either. And at least it was different. Previous reboots have tried to make the character into various levels of dark/violent/psycho. They haven't all been bad (but [...]

THE GREATEST COMICS OF ALL TIME: DAYTRIPPER

THE GREATEST COMICS OF ALL TIME: DAYTRIPPER Daytripper #8 made me cry. No shit. I mean, I wasn't blubbering or anything, but there were definitely tears. Then issue ten, the finale, did it again. This is a book that everyone should read. Some people want to buy the world a coke, I'd like to buy them this. Daytripper tells the story of one man's life's obsession with his own mortality, by showing his loves, his fears, his broken relationships, and his shattered—and realized—dreams. It is a graphic novel in which it is impossible to separate words from art. Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá work together, [...]

CARDINAL-Hymns

CARDINAL-Hymns Cardinal, a duo from England, released their last and first album in 1994 and according to them it was brilliant. I never heard it. But I have been fortunate enough to have heard "Hymns," their second album in eighteen years. It's indie rock and pop, with eclectic mixes of retro/1960s styles, with breathy vocals, written with precision and clarity. In other words, it's from the "clean and pure" side of the indie tracks-not the rough and grungy one. I'm diggin' it. And given their sporadic production history, I thought it appropriate to post this review on [...]

JAD FAIR+HIFIKLUB+KPTMIC HIGAN-Bird House

This is just weird shit. It's frickin great, but it's weird. The artist: Jad Fair + Hifiklub + kptmichigan, one thing will become universally true: good plus good plus good plus good plus good does indeed equal "great". The album: "Bird House." According to the press, Jad Fair was a "founding member of Half Japanese, and collaborator with a slew of artists including Teenage Fanclub, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, and Daniel Johnston." The other two folks are French and German, respectfully. Bird House is limited to a one-time pressing of just 300 hand-numbered 123 records. This single-sided [...]

HAUNTED CITY (Comic book review)

HAUNTED CITY (Comic book review) This book was a submission, and it's hard to get a good flavor for a single issue of a comic-particularly when you're sent only issue #2. But from what I gather, in #1 I missed the exposition of the concept: NYCPD Tom Whalen got shot in the head and now is protecting New York from an Irish death Goddess, a ghost, and various other things that go bump in the night. And merciless criminals who, of course, are as scary as anything supernatural. And we're in the middle of a race riot in Harlem. And there's some corrupt cops. [...]
