Locust Toybox is the musical stylings of one David Firth. He's an animator who is most known for creating the super weird Salad Fingers cartoon shorts. I was familiar with his cartoons, but had no idea he made music as well. If you could imagine what kind of music would come from an animator that makes strange, eeiry cartoons, then his music as Locust Toybox would undoubtedly be what you heard in your head. Fun, A.D.D. driven, whimsical electronic music. If you're familiar with Boards of Canada, it's kind of like their music, only if they were 8 year olds [...]

Honey Claws is a four-man experimental hip hop troop that I have one heck of a time describing. I'm looking at their one sheet and I'm seeing all kinds of phrases like "experimental hip-hop psychedelia", "robotic trippiness", "sexed up beats", "Panda Bear meets Madlib", "Playful, wild-eyed, stream of consciousness energy", and so on and so on. But you know what I'd say? It's damn good...whatever genre their music is. Honey Claws feels uncannily like Animal Collective, if the Collective decided to do a hip hop album. Heck, even their names are reminiscent of Animal Collective. Dr. Zero, Ben [...]
This is the time of year that I scour the blogs finding all kinds of music I missed on people's end of the year lists. Getting gifts at Christmas is fine sure, but the year end lists are the real reason I love the end of the year. Here's all but the top 10 songs from It All Started with Carbon Monoxide 's top 50 songs of the year list. I'll update this post with the final part once they post it. There's some great songs on that list that shouldn't be overlooked. Top 50 Songs of [...]
Wow, so many apologies for my week long absence. My days basically go from 8am to midnight or so every weekday, with work during the day, Lemondrop for 2 or 3 hours, then I get home and people are usually hanging out, or we go downtown. Then, by the time we get back, it's super late and I'm dead tired. Multiply that by 5, and add weekend nights that usually don't end until 3am or so, and you find me completely neglecting the blog. Unacceptable, but that's my life. Busy, busy, busy. But it's midnight and I figured I'd let [...]

Look! It's a turkey Pelican! I want one of those in my front yard. Today is Thanksgiving my friends, and I figured I'd pay my many thanks to all of you guys before I headed off to stuff my face, watch football, sleep, and I'm sure I'll go out and shop or see a movie too. Man, I love Thanksgiving. But seriously, here's a huge thank you to each and every one of my readers for making the Perch even possible. I was always wrote the Perch for my readers, and getting emails every day from bands and readers alike [...]

I found Emiliana while walking home from class a couple years ago. My solemn, cold walk home was interrupted when I noticed something shining on the sidewalk ahead. Are those cd's, I asked myself. Sure enough they were. Pedro the Lion's Achilles Heel , and Emiliana Torrini's album The Fisherman's Woman . For an indie music freak like me, finding two albums randomly on a sidewalk that I doubt many people in town even knew about was some kind of sign. Regardless of what finding them meant, I picked them up and continued home. I didn't know Emiliana, [...]

First off, let me begin by saying that I am absolutely obsessed with The Sixty One . If you haven't heard of it, it's basically like Digg, except for music. You get points for listening to people's music around the site, then you can spend the points to "bump" the songs you like. The more a song gets bumped, the higher it climbs until it makes it to the front page. The earlier you bump a song, the more points it costs you, but if you bump early and the song gets huge, then you earn more points in [...]
I guess yesterday was Domino Day. How I missed that is beyond me. I'm usually on top of Domino Day. But yeah, the point of Domino Day is to break a world record, and they did just that toppling 4.3 million dominoes in a way too over the top fashion. Some people just have too much time on their hands. Even though I knew they broke the record already, I was still really nervous for some reason the whole time I watched it. It's still pretty neat and I figured I'd share it with you guys.

You're probably saying "What?! A hip hop band on the Perch?" right now, and for the most part you'd be correct in the fact I rarely post any hip hop/rap on here. I should know way more than I do, considering Charlie, my LemonDrop Records partner, and his brother George have gigs upon gigs of great hip hop, but when searching for new tunes, things usually work out more in the indie rock direction. Maybe I'll finally look into that DVD of hip hop Charlie gave me a long time ago. But this week I found two groups [...]
Apparently now that the election is over, the news outlets can now report things they'd learned about Sarah Palin which they were previously prevented from reporting by the McCain campaign, as well as other bigwigs in power. I like John Stewart's quote towards the end when he asks, so when this Iraq war is over, I bet you've got a great story to tell us, right? I was just bored tonight and I figured I'd post a little Sunday humor for you. Enjoy.

Good friend to the Perch and one time co-Perch writer, Dylan, told me not five minutes ago that he'd recently listened to Andrew Bird's new album streamed from a super secret location. Forget the fact that for some reason the Perch wasn't invited in on this secret action (I'll hear it soon enough I guess), but our convo was very short, yet got me all kinds of excited. Me: How is it? Dylan: It is wonderful. I don't care what the songs may sound like live, they're the kind of songs that you can just listen [...]
I'm all kinds of excited for today to finally arrived. I feel pretty confident about who is going to win, considering I went to an Obama rally last weekend and 40,000 people showed up. In Springfield, MO. As in the middle of the bible belt Springfield. Bush won here overwhelmingly the last two elections, and won big in Missouri in general, so seeing 40,000 people show up here in Springfield, over 100,000 show up at the arch in St. Louis, I've got to say my hopes are up. I did find it kind of odd that our president [...]

I'll make a halloween Perch Mix if I have time today, but for now, I'll let you admire my costume for this Halloween and enjoy some Ryan Adams. Ryan Adams - Halloweenhead

Not too long ago, I mentioned to Justin that I had been listening to the new Margot and the Nuclear So and So's double album, since he had booked them at Randy Bacon's twice to that point and we both were big fans. Instead of getting the usual "how is it?" response, he immediately said something I completely agreed with. "I'm sure it's good, but there's something about their debut that has become a part of us, a part of our lives, and no matter how good this new album is, it'll never change that fact." [...]

In my boredom tonight, I randomly came across a new Andrew Bird song from his upcoming album Noble Beast , which is going to be released January 2009 on Fat Possum. It's called "Oh No" and it's pretty good. And since I know the majority of you are Andrew Bird fans, I just had to share it. After you're done listening to it, head over to Andrew Bird's music blog over at the NY Times. Yeah, you read right. The best part is most the stuff he writes is about his songwriting rather than other bands, which, coming from [...]

Phillip and Will from Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin were recently in Austria and the great live video blog " They Shoot Music Don't They " got them to sit and play a few songs. Most of you know of my love for SSLYBY, as they're from right here in Springfield where I live and I hung out with them while in Seattle as well, but it's kind of ironic that I put Pershing , their 2008 release, in my car today and listened to it all day at work since I was really in the mood for [...]
My roommate and I were on the floor practically crying last night after watching this. Sure, I felt bad, but the girl posted the video herself, so I imagine she was laughing at herself too. I'd skip to the 2 minute mark and watch from there. Scarlett takes a tumble And this guy's reaction while watching the video is just as priceless. - Funny reaction video

It took two tries and was a long time coming, but my interview with Detektivbyran, my current favorite instrumental band, is finally here. I sent the questions, both your questions and mine, to the band right as they embarked on their tour for Wermland , and Anders was kind enough to sit down and answer the majority of them. I found all kinds of interesting stuff while reading it and I'm sure you will too. I've been trying to do something more than simple artist spotlights and album reviews lately, and I think this is a very good first [...]

Last night's Family Guy was hilarious. It was mainly Peter becoming obsessed with the old 60's song "Surfin Bird" by the Trashmen, which is annoying as can be, and then he meets Jesus and tries to help him reveal himself to the world. I'd never heard that song before, but even though Peter sings it something like 15 times throughout the episode, we still cracked up each time as he did his little bird is the word dance. Definitely one of the best Family Guy episodes I've seen in a while. Family Guy - I Dream of [...]
