New Wax Well, I think it's safe to say that Colour Revolt doesn't care what we think. They are going to continue doing whatever they want. Luckily for us listeners, every direction they seem to take is a good one. After a couple of rough years involving member changes and uncertainty, Jesse Coppenbarger, Sean Kirkpatrick, and a revolving cast of friends and musicians have revived Colour Revolt and have poised themselves to release a very strong album. Upon first listen to [...]

New Wax We've sung the praises of Doug Burr numerous times on CO. His 2007 album On Promenade was my introduction to Burr and it was an unexpected jewel filled with lush instrumentation and accomplished songwriting. 2009's The Shawl , which found Burr reworking passages from the book of Psalms, was yet another solid contribution to the genre. Now Burr is back with another alt. country/folk-infused album of original work entitled O Ye Devastator , and its fitting cover art candidly depicts a bride [...]

New Wax Sometimes the grandiose nature of Arcade Fire's music serves as a double-edged sword. Like some Fellini-esque spectacle, the biggest moments soar, while others border on heavy-handed. There's no denying that Neon Bible had its share of triumphs, but all the anti-authority posturing prevented it from rivaling the pure escapism of Funeral . Now Win Butler and company return with The Suburbs , a more introspective effort concerned with the pitfalls of adulthood rather than the corruption of the powers that be. The [...]

New Wax It seemed the best way to discern between former Red House Painter Mark Kozelek's solo material and his work under the Sun Kil Moon moniker was in the latter's affinity for sprawling Crazy Horse-esque electric guitar. On Kozelek's latest installment as Sun Kil Moon, he disregards that trend and turns in an achingly intimate affair recorded entirely on nylon guitar. The tracks on Admiral Fell Promises seem classically informed and Kozelek, who has always had a knack for infectious acoustic riffing, delves even deeper [...]

New Wax Perfume Genius is the brainchild of Seattle's Mike Hadreas, whose new Matador album Learning is a thoroughly engaging effort that tackles some heady emotional subject matter. Sonically the album thrives on a decidedly barebones aesthetic with mostly piano-based songs that work effectively in their intimate sketch-like state. Hadreas' voice is fraught with fragility through much of Learning . "Mr. Peterson" tells the story of an inappropriate yet intimate relationship with a teacher who ultimately commits suicide, while other songs tackle everything from drug [...]

New Wax Dan Smith has a message for you. It's a message he has bottled in urgency, awkwardly spoken and shouted over moving orchestrations and busy noises. "We need hope now more than ever before." If you blink you may miss it. Tucked away in a split second towards the end of Smith's Listener Project's new album Wooden Heart . For the majority of the past 8 years, Smith has been touring the country trying to get his message of hope [...]

New Wax Eight years ago Crooked Fingers released Reservoir Songs , an EP of covers that found Eric Bachmann and company tackling songs by Prince, Queen, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, and David Bowie. An essential piece to Crooked Fingers' discography, the all-covers EP was intended to be a yearly project but the idea quickly faded in favor of original material and other projects. Luckily the idea never died completely because Bachmann and his band are back with a new EP of imaginative covers. The album [...]

New Wax I mentioned Jonni Greth awhile back when he recorded a rough, yet fantastic one-take demo of his song "I Found Jihad" at my old place. Judging by the positive response, many listeners will be excited to find a studio version of the song on My God! My God! , Greth's new EP which was produced and engineered by Jonell Polansky at her Nashville studio DaCapo Music. With Greth's delicate vocals and a lone guitar, My God! My God! manages to be instrumentally [...]

New Wax I guess music blogs are good for something other than pissing off record companies. Edinburgh's Meursault (pronouced "Murr-so," according to their myspace page) have a new record entitled All Creatures Will Make Merry on Song, By Toad Records, a label spin-off of the music blog . Starting out as a solo project for singer Neil Pennycook, the band has since expanded into a six-piece ensemble. Like fellow Scots Frightened Rabbit, We Were Promised Jetpacks, and The Twilight Sad, Meursault's songs are skewed [...]
New Wax With The '59 Sound , The Gaslight Anthem managed to turn in one of the year's most likable albums. With its combination of punk-rock guitar riffs and blue-collar choruses, the New Jersey band took an amalgamation of influences ranging from The Replacements to Bruce Springsteen and made the familiar sound astonishingly immediate rather than kitschy or forcibly nostalgic. Fans should ecstatically embrace the band's new record American Slang , which offers more of the same while expanding a bit on sonic textures. Blue-collar sing-a-longs [...]

New Wax To whatever avail, throw as many rock genres as you prefer into the Maps & Atlases blender; the quality product that is their debut album Perch Patchwork is irrefutably nothing short of brilliant craftsmanship. Tantalizing listeners for the past few years with several EPs, the band laid down early the scope of their talent as a clear math rock contender, yet, with each new release, the initiative to lock down a style all their own became quite evident. [...]
