Album Review : Tu Fawning - Hearts On Hold

Album Review : Tu Fawning - Hearts On Hold Tu Fawning : Like Portishead. Still, as they say " If you create a melancholic album of minor key, jazz infused songs with yearning female vocals accompanied by the occasional ambient drone, off beat rhythm and soulful sentiment you're going to get compared to Portishead ". It's not a well known expression, but it seems appropriate here. Yet unlike their trip-hop predecessors, Tu Fawning rely less on electronics as they prefer to flex their musically competent muscle through a myriad of traditional instrumentation: guitars, pianos, organs, trombones and [...]

Single Review : Dead Red Sun - Facility

Single Review : Dead Red Sun - Facility Having formed just over a year ago, London 3-piece Dead Red Sun look set to up the anti in 2011 with a new single ' Facility ' and a forthcoming EP, to go along with their constant touring in and around the capital. ' Facility ' perfectly encompasses what this instrumental band are all about. Beginning with a recorded voice sample, things quickly move into instrumental territory as Mike Guppy's guitar, Ollie Bremner's bass, and Tom Murphy's drums all collide with pin point precision. EP Review : Gaoler's Daughter - Rhyme & Reason

EP Review : Gaoler's Daughter - Rhyme & Reason Gaoler's Daughter sound like all your favourite indie bands combined. Is this a good thing? Gaoler's Daughter – a London based quartet – have incorporated a plentitude of differing indie styles into their sound. Each song on ' Rhyme & Treason ' has a different character; making it rather difficult to conclusively decide which indie subgenre the band belongs in. More often than not, bands that vary styles or genres from song to song claim to be ' pushing boundaries' wherein actuality they lack coherence, confidence and direction. This is [...]

Single Review : Chris Devotion & The Expectations (CD EX)

Single Review : Chris Devotion & The Expectations (CD EX) Rock and roll has never been about musicianship, it's what you do with it that counts. From Chuck Berry to The White Stripes , various incarnations of the twelve bars blues have been roaring through the decades with perfection when placed in the right hands. So Glasgow's Chris Devotion and The Expectations familiar take on this even more familiar genre is a risk, but it pays off. New single ' I Need Your Touch ' is brittle rock and roll that might begin with sparse Hives [...]

New Music : Surreal

New Music : Surreal With quite possibly the busiest January for new music ever on Music Liberation in our 4 years of existence, we kick things off on a strong note with Brighton based duo, Surreal . Consisting of vocalist Laurence Allen and multi instrumentalist Tim Rowkins , Surreal could well be the ones to take over from Mike Skinner when he hangs up his boots later this year. Whilst Surreals music can easily be compared with other singer/beat maker [...]

Single Review : Young Buffalo - Three Deep

Single Review : Young Buffalo - Three Deep Fresh-faced Mississippi trio Young Buffalo return with a straight-ahead indie-rock song off their forthcoming debut album. Considering their age (probably a collective age of about ten) and their short time together, this US band have accumulated such a huge amount of press support and such a sizable fan base that they make me feel rather old and scared. And they haven't even released an album yet. Simple and high spirited, ' Three Deep ' encompasses all the regular elements that modern indie [...]

New Music : Charlotte Eriksson

New Music : Charlotte Eriksson Charlotte Eriksson is only 19 years old. Charlotte Eriksson is a singer-songwriter. Charlotte Eriksson is good looking. Charlotte Eriksson is talented, and sometime soon Charlotte Eriksson will be branded " one to watch ". Good, that's the obvious rhetoric out the way. You see I suspect fitting into such a demographic will be both a blessing and a curse for this Swedish artist; proving she's not just another contrived, female, pop-folk act will invariably be [...]

EP Review : Strange Birds - Strange Birds

EP Review : Strange Birds - Strange Birds Strange Birds, Hailing from California are a drawling, near catatonic four-piece that are giving away their new self-titled EP for free, on Bandcamp . That's right. All seven tracks of it too. Of course, they have it on a name-your-price scheme but when offered something this beautiful, it would be a crime against creativity not to pay something. They've released opening track ' Summerbirds ' as a teaser and it's a mighty showcase of their talents. The song is a spacious, semi-psychedelic tune that's intimate as hell and demands [...]
