the magic kids - hey boy um, hey back. this breezy little snippet of a song from the memphis band the magic kids is beyond catchy - thanks, in large part, to what sounds an awful lot like a middle school chorus group singing backup - and we cannot dislodge it's sunny harmonies from our mind. we don't have much info on the band itself, but we'll certainly be keeping our ears peeled.

there's a swelling that happens, about a minute and three quarters into this song from the new digital ep from austin, texas band golden bear , and then again - only more so - around the three & half minute mark, that has echoes of "hey jude" and lifts up the entire enterprise. seems, to us, almost worth listening for these moments alone. golden bear - future blues hear more from golden bear at myspace .

speaking of montreal, the four ladies in the high-powered lit-pop group pony up have a new album out, called stay gold , and though we've only heard a couple of promo tracks, to judge on this small sample is to love the record. catchy & buoyant - despite lyrical nods to such bleak topics as charles manson - & well crafted, you're definitely going to want to hear more; which is why you should head over to the band's myspace . pony up - a crutch or a cradle [...]

wilco has recorded a cover of the woody guthrie song "jolly banker" and are offering it for download on their website . there are a couple of suggested donation levels - it's a sliding scale depending on level of involvement in the financial crisis, and all proceeds go directly to the woody guthrie foundation - but if you're broke and out of work and generally down on your luck, well, in true woody fashion there's a category for you, too. so head on over and download it, already . here's another woody song [...]

josh ritter has released a deluxe 2 disc reissue of his 2002 album golden age of radio , including, on the second disc, a solo acoustic performance of the entire original album, as well as a handful of b-sides. as it happens the song that started our love affair with ritter, the lovely "come and find me," receives the acoustic reworking, which needless to say makes us rather happy. you can hear the results below, and head over to the album's page on ritter's website for a free download (in exchange for [...]

north carolina's benji hughes announced himself last year with an ambitious - and quite good - double disk, 25-song debut album called a love extreme and melding balladry and rock, organic singer & songwriter faire and danceable electronics. one of our favorite examples, the album closer, with an appealing sense of whimsy, is "baby, it's your life," which you can sample below: benji hughes - baby, it's your life

martin scorsese's the last waltz , considered generally one of the best concert films, captured in mesmerizing - and often rather hilarious (all of the interviews, van morrison, etc) - detail the final live show by the band , in 1976, right here in san francisco. we saw it for the first (and second times) a few weeks ago and can't recommend it highly enough. though there was an official soundtrack released, and then another, more comprehensive collection released later, each contained some remixing & overdub to clean up the sound. but [...]
