this week's edition of sunday night live features perennial anyone's guess favorite josh ritter . ritter and his band played a terrific six song set at the mountain stage late last summer, and npr was on the scene to document . the first three songs in particular are a joy, but we hope you'll like the whole thing. josh ritter live on the mountain stage 18 august 2008 josh ritter - to the dogs or whoever (live) [...]

leonard cohen 's "stranger song," from his debut album the songs of leonard cohen , provides the theme for warren beatty (as john mccabe) in robert altman 's self-identified anti-western mccabe & mrs. miller , which we saw again recently. cohen supplies three songs for the film, but "stranger song" is the most memorable, the most haunting, and the one you can listen to below. leonard cohen - stranger song

maia hirasawa , yet another emergent swedish pop sensation, will see her debut album though, i'm just me released in the states early next year. we received the first single, "and i found this boy," a buoyant piece with somewhat embittered lyrics, and thought you all might like a listen. maia hirasawa - and i found this boy and have a look at the video, too, a charming little scene set in a dim-looking men's room:
the environmental protection agency has a provision called the clean air act. though it would seem an obvious thing, there is a question under debate right now as to whether carbon dioxide pollution should be regulated under this act. now, carbon dioxide is one of the largest factors contributing to rising global temperatures, a crisis of epic and intractable proportions. which makes this issue immensely important. the e.p.a. will make a ruling on this soon, but before they do so they are legally obligated to open a forum for public comment. this is where you all come in. [...]

as tradition dictates on this our day of gratitude and overindulgence, here once again we present a visit to alice's famous restaurant . arlo guthrie - alice's restaurant happy thanksgiving, gang.

rather enjoy this live version of "staring at the sun," from the 1997 u2 album pop , for, among other reasons, the robust picture it creates of the band. the musicianship is quality, of course, and the songwriting - like much of bono's work - flirts with but stops just short of preachiness and a treacly sentimentality; it's serious but accented with a sense of fun. that sense of fun is on full display in this recording, both in bono's introduction to the song, in which he thanks the people of mexico city for the burritos, and [...]

halifax native meaghan smith has a new ep out - a follow up to her debut album the cricket's orchestra - called the cricket's quartet and on which you'll find our latest song obsession, "a little love." meaghan's voice is doll but it's the production, the marriage of traditional folk-pop instrumentation and light scratching & electronics, that cinched things. meaghan smith - a little love and here's the video:

the mythology around sixto rodriguez would seem almost enough to propel him to wider acknowledgment, acclaim. he released cold fact , his debut album, in 1970. it tanked. a few years and another album later his recording career was all but over. then people in south africa discovered cold fact and made it a hit. thirty years later, after a journalist found him working construction in detroit and light in the attic records reissued cold fact , rodriguez is back. he comes through town this weekend to play an in-store at amoeba [...]
we're really hoping this film, cadillac records, based on the story of chess records & some of the more influential blues musicians of the modern age, will be good, because jeffrey wright (as muddy waters) and mos def (as chuck berry) are two of our favorites. muddy waters - mannish boy etta james - i'd rather go blind [...]

a few items of note gang: a) our current favorite local band, the dodos , have live concert footage from their september show at spiegeitent in new york up and streaming at baeblemusic . here's a sample: the dodos - jodi 2) they shoot music don't they , a very cool music videoblog that shoots unplugged performances in viennese public space, [...]

the raconteurs performed three songs from their second album, consolers of the lonely, acoustically in a live set for david dye and the world cafe last week, and they sounded pretty durn good. "top yourself" is a particular treat. you can hear the whole show, including an interview with brendan benson and patrick keeler, here . the raconteurs live on world cafe 14 november 2008 the raconteurs - old enough (live) [...]

acid tongue , the second solo album by rilo kilean jenny lewis , didn't receive - or, we should say, hasn't yet received - quite the same celebration as her first effort, rabbit fur coat . but we still think it rather fine. one of our preferred songs from the album, "see fernando," first came to attention when she and the watson twins played it on conan back in 2006: jenny lewis live on conan, 14 october 2006 jenny lewis & the watson twins - see fernando (live) [...]

anna ash and the family tree are a folk outfit (spritzed by a touch of soul, a hint of twang) from ann arbor, michigan made buoyant by ash's timeless & affecting singing voice, a voice that puts her, we think, in the rough vicinity of singers like, say, jolie holland. their album, hello friend (from a bird above) , is out and available now . listen to a few songs below or stream some additional songs at myspace . anna ash and the family tree - the birds don't care [...]
via the ten club : With the 2008 election hot on our tails, we thought it would be the perfect time to dig into our archives and "take a look back to take a look forward." In 2004, Pearl Jam was one of seventeen musicians who took part in the Vote for Change tour - caravanning through battle ground states to Get Out The Vote. An indie film crew made up of Jeff Ament's filmmaker/ skater friends (see sixstair.com) documented [...]

grace potter and the nocturnals finish up a two-night stand at the independent tonight. we saw them there on the last swing through town and came away well-impressed. besides the musicianship, these lot know how to have a good time, and their shows are consistently peppered with choice covers. as evidence we enter people's exhibits a) through i): grace potter & the nocturnals - pain in my heart (live) grace potter & the nocturnals - [...]
from gvb : little joy - unattainable little joy is out on tour now , with a stop in s.f. to play at slim's on 9 december. more info here .

we first heard of san diegans, san diegites, san diegots swim party when "the kids are a drag" showed up as one of the i pick my nose song obsessions this past summer . at the time their album, pixie dust on the blood range , hadn't yet been released and though we made ourselves a note to follow up, it wasn't until the disc showed up at the a.g. world headquarters recently that made good on it. happily, time affected our affection for these lot not a whit. or, in english please, it's solid effort [...]
la blogotheque and current tv have posted a takeaway show with the fleet foxes filmed here in san francisco, at the kezar gymnasium on stanyan street, which building's acoustics suit rather well the band's multi-part harmonies. but don't take our word for it; watch it yourself below: fleet foxes - sun giant

grampall jookabox , the nom de musica for indianapolis-native moose adamson, played the hemlock tavern this evening. we couldn't shake free in time to make it over for the set, but we sure would have liked to. because grampall jookabox - a play on a child's attempt at grandpa jukebox (we think) - has a sort of homemade feel, an innocence & exuberance to it; which is less a comment on the production quality than the eclecticism and sense of fun that pervades the music. all of which, we feel sure, would have made for an interesting evening. in consolation [...]
