Last week I had the opportunity to sit and chat with Rachel, Solon, Ashley and Davey of Great Northern for a feature in a magazine that I'll mention a little closer to press time. Not only is the band's Trading Twilight for Daylight one of my favorite releases of 2007 (okay, maybe I'll let the cat out of the bag now ... unless something comes out between now and the end of the year that totally blows my socks off, this CD is going to grab the top spot on my "Best [...]
Division Day - "More than This" (Roxy Music cover) ( MP3 ) The Jones Street Boys - "Last Time" ( MP3 ), "Argentina" ( MP3 ) Annuals - "Where Have You Been" (Manchester Orchestra cover) ( MP3 ) Manchester Orchestra - "Brother" (Annuals cover) ( MP3 ) Various Artists - Siber Records Halloween compilation ( view tracklist ) ( ZIP ) Demander - 5-song sampler ( ZIP ), "Psycho Killer" (Talking Heads cover) ( ZIP )
Obviously I'm not the first person to post about this video but since I don't read all the hip indie sites , I didn't know about this video until my brother showed it to me. Some dude took a Pinback song ("From Nothing to Nowhere") and overlaid on top of one of the most memorable scenes from the '80s film The Breakfast Club. It works surprisingly well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =dgAaqmqemJQ
Pretty light week on he downloads and on the updates - chalk it up to seeing Van Halen and the Smashing Pumpkins on two consecutive nights (more on that this weekend). Minipop - "Like I Do" ( MP3 ) Division Day - "Plowed" (Sponge cover) ( MP3 ) Thrice - "Digital Sea" ( MP3 ) Say Hi - "Northwestern Girls" ( MP3 )
Got a couple of podcasts to suggest. Pat, of Patradio.org, does a really nice job featuring local (Columbus, Ohio) talent on his podcasts while mixing in some national/international stuff towards the tail end of the show. Pat posted episode #90 this week and it is of particular interest to me because Ash and Matt of the band The Hot Damn (who I wrote about a few months ago) are the special guests and talk a little bit about their band and about the label they started called Merit Badge [...]
3 songs I couldn't stop listening to this weekend. Idlewild - "When I Argue I See Shapes" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =LGJ6bU2BPi8 Hum - "Stars" (ah, the power of advertising ... a few seconds of this song are in the new Cadillac commercial) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =Rfbn3ieVUYU LeAnn Rimes - "Nothing Better to Do" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =xhQHkPSHZRw
Robert Pollard - "Current Desperation (Angels Speak of Nothing)" ( MP3 ), "Pill Gone Girl" ( MP3 ) Chris Stills - "Fool for Love" ( MP3 ) Travis Morrison - "As We Proceed" ( MP3 ) Terra Diablo - "Setting Sun" ( MP3 ), "Captain of Simpletons" ( MP3 ) Dappled Cities - "Paint the Walls" ( MP3 ), "Save Your Money" ( MP3 ), "Granddance" ( MP3 ) The High Violets - "Chinese Letter (Ulrich Schnauss Remix)" ( MP3 ) Ryan [...]

Following in the wake of Radiohead's big news this week, Tennessee alt.country rockers Glossary have posted their entire new release, 'The Better Angels of Our Nature', up on their website and are inviting fans and skeptics to download the thing for free. And I, for one, would much rather hear this CD than the new Radiohead CD. Apparently Glossary-hungry fans crashed Glossary.us with the massive amount of downloading going on but as of the time of this post, you should be able to hit the site and grab [...]
It's nice to see artistic vision in videos, something that in a music videoless MTV is hard to come by these days. From Scout Niblett's forthcoming release, 'This Fool Can Die Now', featuring a cameo by Skeletor Will Oldham, here's a really cool, if somewhat odd, video for "Kiss". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =I9cwz12wKD0 And if you dig the Southern Gothic song, well, why dontcha download it and throw it on ye olde iPod? MP3: "Kiss"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =mjCfWollL3s Now that he's quit singing for Riders on the Storm (aka The Doors), Ian Astbury has resurrected The Cult along with guitarist Billy Duffy and the band's new CD, 'Born into This', hits store shelves today. It's a nice time for a comeback and the new CD certainly doesn't soil the band's legacy but fans of The Cult pre-'Sonic Temple' probably shouldn't bother with the new one. If you're on the fence, visit the band's website where you can preview tracks from 'Born into This'. A full-fledged [...]
Years ago when I was interviewing Lauri Kranz she told me about seeing Tim Keegan perform at SXSW and said that if she ever had the opportunity to collaborate with the artist of her choice, it would be Mr. Keegan. I wasn't familiar with him at the time but after some digging around discovered that Tim had worked with the likes of Robyn Hitchcock and The Blue Aeroplanes and, at the time (this was probably around 2000), was fully engaged in his own project, Departure Lounge . All the Departure Lounge CDs are [...]
Usually I'd recommend picking and choosing the songs you download, but this week I think all the songs are worth checking out. iLiKETRAiNs may fill the hole in my heart left by the breakup of Aereogramme. Holy Fuck is an apt name and not at all what I was expecting. A Pavement cover by Cassettes Won't Listen? AWESOME. The Cure provide loads of influence for A Shoreline Dream. Nice to see Longwave is still around. A lot of you keep coming for the new Division Day downloads so here's another one. Viva Voce is re-issuing some of their earlier work [...]

A far cry from the Sonic Youth-inspired indie rock noise she was creating in the mid-90's as a member of Boston's The Dirt Merchants , Maria Christopher's latest venture, 27 , is breezy electronic pop with jazzy elements. The band's sound hasn't always been this fully orchestrated – early efforts left room for improvement but set the structural foundation for Christopher and ex-Spore guitarist Ayal Naor to build upon over the course of three full lengths. For those disappointed with Esthero's 2005 glossy pop follow-up to her 1998 trip-hop classic Breathe from Another [...]
The new album isn't so bad but I was a bit hesitant to drop $50 for a ticket to see the Smashing Pumpkins in Columbus on October 11 because I didn't want the setlist to be heavy with new material with the "hits" being saved for the encore. Now, normally I'm all for bands with a deep back catalog of hits and a new album to promote playing the new stuff. In fact, I wonder what the point is for bands like The Scorpions or Journey or Superchunk or whoever [...]
I usually don't waste my time responding to the MySpace bulletin survey things where you have to answer 100 questions like "Who was the last person you kissed?" and "Kool-Aid or Hi-C?". But I saw a bulletin called "Life Soundtrack" from Shirley (who played bass in Log ) that intrigued me. I decided to fill it out and post it here. Directions: Open your music library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc.) Put it on shuffle Press play For every question [...]
The Donnas - "Don't Wait Up for Me" ( MP3 ) (grab it while you can) Deadstring Brothers - "Heavy Load" ( MP3 ), "Silver Mountain" ( MP3 ) Nyles Lannon - "Hesitation" ( MP3 ), "Next Obsession" ( MP3 ) (ex-Film School) Dutch Kills - "Sunday is the Greatest Day" ( MP3 ), "Storm Clouds" ( MP3 ), "She is Gone/Marisol" ( MP3 ) Saturday Looks Good to Me - "Make a Plan" ( MP3 ) Division Day - "Enjoy the Silence" (Depeche [...]

Lizard McGee has finally struck pay dirt in not only his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, but national as well with the release of Earwig's third full-length, Center of the Earth . It only took him 15 years to do so. Now, let's be fair to the songwriter and his band - Earwig has always been a perennial favorite in the local scene dating back to the days when the original lineup was playing house shows near the Ohio State campus. A few lineup changes later, a few years off to concentrate on things [...]
Trent Reznor addresses a crowd in Australia a few days ago with this speech about downloading music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =-mm6rc7hcFE
