Ratt On tour this summer to promote a brand new album (their first in 10 years), Ratt rolled into Columbus on Friday night to play what I'm calling an "economical" set lasting about 75 minutes. Rumors are that things haven't been great in the Ratt camp, especially with drummer Bobby Blotzer releasing a "tell-all" book a few months ago that cast some negativity on the band and, in particular, lead singer Stephen Pearcy. I will say that it was awesome hearing some arena rock classics ("You in Love", "Lay it Down", "Wanted Man", "Round and Round", etc.) [...]
Philip Selway's first solo album, Familial, will be in stores next week. So what does music by the drummer of Radiohead sound like? Selway's made a few songs available to check out to give you an idea and I'm not at all surprised by the sounds. More early Radiohead than experimental Radiohead, the drummer's just not going to be able to shake the Radiohead comparisons even though this is all just something that he's doing on his own. I actually think - based on these tracks - that I'm going to enjoy this album more than Radiohead's [...]
Dear John - My kids listen to the local pop radio station. Every time I hear the very opening of "Half of My Heart", my heart does a quick skip and jump ... Now, I know that you are far too big of a rock star to listen to unknown bands and, let's face it, there are only so many strings on a guitar and only so many notes you can play so you're bound to play something at some point that sounds an awful lot like another band. I'm cool with that and I'm not even accusing [...]
1. Azure Ray Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink haven't made a record together since 2004 but after a one-off reunion performance in 2008 decided maybe it would be worth working together on new material. Azure Ray's new album, Drawing Down the Moon, will be released in September and I'm not sure you'll find more beautiful female vocals (x 2!) on any other CD this year. If September feels too far away, you can pick up a preview 3-song EP now to tide you over. [...]
Aaron Perrino has always been one of my favorite people to interview. I first met Aaron when he was fronting The Sheila Divine , a Boston-based indie band that somehow ended up on a primarily metal label (Roadrunner). The band made a few stops in Columbus in the late '90s as both headliners and as support on tours with bands like Our Lady Peace . As was par for the course for many of the bands that formed during that time period, the economics of a rock n' roll lifestyle didn't work out and The [...]
With new singer Robert Mason (Cry of Love, Lynch Mob) in tow, '80s hair metal giants Warrant show no signs of hanging things up anytime soon. Currently doing shows on weekends at both clubs and as part of festivals, Warrant's working on new material which they hope to release sometime in early 2011. Of course, it's the hits the fans want to hear as the band makes stops across the U.S. and Warrant doesn't disappoint, playing songs from their first 3 albums (the only 3 to feature guitarists Erik Turner & Joey Allen, bassist Jerry Dixon, drummer Steven Sweet, and [...]
Some things I listened to last week. 1. Esthero I remember getting Esthero's Breath From Another from a Sony college rep back in '98. The languid trip-hop sound complimented the jazzy vocals and the group of us who were into Lamb, Hooverphonic, the Sneaker Pimps, etc., at the time ate this one up like it was an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet. These days, the singer is collaborating with artists like Timbaland and Kanye West. 2. oOoOO Pitchfork [...]
Brass Bed - "Begs Me Not to Beg" , "Pop Mission" The Extra Lens (Franklin Bruno & John Darnielle) - "Only Existing Footage" Scraping For Change - "My Darkest Hour" The New Czars - "Brush with the Devil" Karnivool - "Set Fire to the Hive" Devotionals - "Chest Like Expansive Wings" Fox in the Henhouse - "Fears" [...]
1. The Graviators Sweden rules! It's as if the only reading material available in the country are back issues of Hit Parader magazine circa 1981 - 1991 and all the upstart bands think that metal from that decade is still cool around the world. There are as many sleaze/glam bands coming from Sweden today as there were from the Sunset Strip in LA 20 years ago. There are also tons of Sabbath-inspired bands, like The Graviators whose sludgy, doomy metal would make Ozzy and Tony Iommi proud. [...]

Over on The Frames MySpace page , the following note was posted: "New York City is the first locale to go onsale for The Frames Twentieth Anniversary Tour. Stay tuned for info on Washington DC, Philadelphia, and other select cities across the United States to be revealed over the following days and weeks... These shows are not to be missed!" Sounds encouraging but it also sounds like a limited-run tour. I can't complain - I was fortunate enough to catch a number of performances by The Frames during SXSW [...]
The new Damnwells CD should be out before the end of the year (hopefully before the end of the summer). Here's a track from the CD, "She Goes Around".
Anybody heard any buzz about the new Jimmy Eat World CD? Invented is due in stores September 28 with a single ("My Best Theory") showing up sometime in August. Mark Trombino, who produced Clarity and Bleed American, is back on-board and it'll be interesting to see if the band can capture the magic of those two CDs on their latest. I've been listening to the Jimmy Eat World catalog a lot this week and my current go-to song is "Pain" from 2004's Futures. The first leg of the band's tour [...]
1. Magic Kids I'm not entirely convinced the Magic Kids are for real. The group's debut, Memphis, due in stores in late August, sounds like an obscure gem put out by a California high school glee club in 1974. Looking for influences? Try The Beach Boys, The Hollies, The Partridge Family, and The Turtles. DOWNLOAD: Magic Kids - "Summer" 2. I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House Alex from In Music We Trust has been singing this [...]
This tour is going to do really well, right? I've got to believe that the Greg Dulli maniacs are already making their travel plans to attend one of these shows - heck, if we can score Cleveland tickets, we'll be going. While it's called "An Evening with Greg Dulli" , the Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers/The Gutter Twins singer will be accompanied by Twilight Singers guitarist Dave Rosser and multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson (Polyphonic Spree) and will play a set of songs spanning his entire career including debuting new material from the Twilight Singers' album scheduled for release [...]
As Robert Francis's headlining set was coming to an end last night, I leaned over to Kirk and said, "I'd like Pete Yorn a lot more if he sounded like this." Kirk's response was an instant Tweet classic, "Pete Yorn is a poor man's Robert Francis." The LA-based singer channels some of the last 3 decades best singers - you can hear bits of Bono , Springsteen , Jeff Buckley , Ryan Adams in his delivery - and while he maintains a moderately moody and subdued [...]

Due to Tom Petty guitarist Mike Campbell's illness, the Cleveland stop on Petty's tour was postponed but that didn't stop openers Drive-By Truckers from performing a not-so-secret secret show at Cleveland's tiny Beachland Tavern last night. DBT's Patterson Hood posted the following: "The last time we played the Tavern Room at The Beachland Ballroom, Cooley tried to punch me out, smashed a guitar and threw the remains of it at Brad then proceeded to tear down the stage. (Feb. 2002). [...]
Here's some things I listened to last week. Feel free to leave your list in the comments section. 1. The Equals A few weeks ago I found 2 Eddy Grant ("Electric Avenue") CDs in the used bin at Half-Price Books . I was in a hurry, didn't have any cash on me and thought "I'll just run back there someday during my lunch break and pick them up." Last week I was ready to make the purchase but when I started scanning the Reggae section, I discovered that there must [...]
There was a 6-12 month period of time in 1999, while Kansas's Ultimate Fakebook was touring to support This Will Be Laughing Week , that the trio (vocals/guitar - Bill McShane , bassist - Nick Colby , drummer - Eric Melin ) seemed to play Columbus, Ohio every other week. And, hey, I wasn't complaining one bit! The band's power-pop sound bore some similarities to bands I dug like Weezer , Superdrag , and Green Day and it helped them land a short-lived major label deal with Epic Records. [...]
Found a post on MetalSucks.net titled "Metal Blade Records in 2010: Still Killing It". Can't remember the last time I cared about anything Metal Blade put out and, truthfully, really had no idea the label was still kicking it. The description of Barn Burner particularly interested me: Up-beat, throwback stoner metal ala The Sword that's got some real soul and actual musicality. If you're going to describe a band in 15 or words or less, this is how it should be done. I immediately sought out Barn Burner's [...]
