SEPTEMBER 9/1 Dirty Projectors, Yacht @ Beat Kitchen i've been down on my luck all summer and now apparently fall for being out of town for the gigs i really want to see. May those minds who can attend be numbed + re-programmed. i haven't been normal since i saw these guys down at the todd p party at sxsw this past year. dave longstreth and company completely changed my view and previous position on all things i once thought i knew. wow - deep and sentimental, i know. mp3 will not [...]

here's the title track to sharon jones & the dap-kings new album, 100 days, 100 nights , available oct. 2...now, i realize amy winehouse is getting a lot of hype for reinventing herself as a soul singer on her most recent album (the one where she's backed by the dap-kings) & she sounds pretty good, too...but sharon jones is the real deal...this isn't neo-soul or retro-soul or soul-revival, it's just soul music & it's really good...get on board...even more exciting than an upcoming sharon jones & the dap-kings album is an upcoming sharon jones & the dap-kings live show...seriously, [...]

looks like nels cline has come down with the chicken pox & wilco had to cancel a couple dates on their current tour...yikes...reminds me of the time jesse & joey got chicken pox during the first season of full house...stephanie gets them first, but it spreads to both jesse and joey...meanwhile, as part of his sportscasting job, danny is scheduled to be on the bench at a golden state warriors game, and with dj going to her first slumber party, danny is having a hard time finding a babysitter for michelle, who has [...]

never really bought into devendra banhart's brand of freak-folk, but the blogosphere was all abuzz last week over new tracks from his upcoming album, smokey rolls down thunder canyon , so i thought i'd check 'em out...after all, the man did have his beard ripped off by clell tickle ...anyways, i'm glad i did, cause i'm really digging "seahorse", a fantastic eight minute jam that starts slow, but picks up right around two minutes & then really gets going near the [...]
it's really easy to just throw up a couple youtube clips & call it a post...so that's what i'm doing...these two are pretty amazing, courtesy of mike biondi . walk it out weng weng

compared to the past few weekends, there doesn't seem to be that much going on in the city this weekend...besides the holmes brothers out in berwyn , the ponys & the waco brothers at west fest , & the old 97's at taylor street festa italiana , the biggest recommendation i can make is going to see the incredible mavis staples close out the great performers festival at millenium park [...]

went & saw the ten yesterday...pretty hilarious...i think my favorite segment was "thou shalt not covet thy neighbors goods"... candace laughed hardest at "thou shalt not take the lord's name in vain" & also at the guy in the theater who kept making a " pffff " noise every time he laughed...while it isn't quite at the level of wet hot american summer (easily one of the funniest movies of the [...]

three big chicago shows going on sale in the next couple days, & i'm guessing they'll all sell out right away...beastie boys at riviera theatre, 09.26 ( on sale saturday @ 10am), ryan adams & the cardinals at chicago theatre, 09.29 ( on sale saturday @ noon) & stevie wonder at charter one pavilion, 09.10 ( on sale monday @10am)...a couple reasons you may want to make it to these shows; the beastie boys are playing a rare instrumental concert, full of the funky jazz workouts from their new album, the mix-up [...]

this picture kind of reminds me beetljuice ...anyway, i really got into page france towards the end of 2005, with their wonderful hello, dear wind album, but for some reason i haven't checked out the new one all the way through, even though it's been out since may...they're opening for bishop allen tonight at subterranen , i highly recommend both bands if you're into exuberant indie folk-pop. download: page france - mr [...]
In September (25) Anti Records is releasing a new album by Bettye LaVette . She is a soul legend who scored her first hit in 1962. In 1972 she recorded an album at my Dad's old studio that featured The Muscle Shoals Sound Rhythm Section . The album was supposed to come out on Atlantic Records and everyone seemed to think that it was going to be her long-awaited [...]

the heart attack (previously known as lovestink) is a collaboration between cee-lo green & plantlife's jack splash...the two tracks below were released on a limited edition sampler cd that was packaged with early copies of gnarls barkley's st. elsewhere ...i can't find anything on their upcoming album which is supposed to be out later this year, but i thought i'd share these with you in case you missed them the first time around..."right now", by the way, was one of my favorite songs of last year. download: the heart attack - [...]

david gilmour's 2006 concert at the royal albert hall, which featured appearances by david bowie, robert wyatt, david crosby & graham nash, will be released on a two disc dvd set sept. 18...the concert film will also be shown in select theatres worldwide on sept. 15...thought that was a good enough reason to post this great track off gilmour's 1978 self-titled solo album...unfortunately, it doesn't look like this one made the dvd. . download: david gilmour - there's no way out of here [...]

after a long eccentric career, country-pop icon lee hazlewood succumbed to kidney cancer over the weekend...if you've never listened to him, do yourself a favor & check these out. download: lee hazlewood - i'll live yesterdays (1971) download: lee hazlewood - you look like a lady (1972) download: lee hazlewood - it's nothing to me (2006) . related: [...]

lollapalooza was exhausting this weekend, but ultimately, very entertaining, highlighted by late afternoon sets on sunday by the stooges, !!!, my morning jacket & tv on the radio...a few of my favorite moments included a shirtless 14-year-old in jean shorts, glasses, & a hair lip, trying to grind on my friend michelle during daft punk, before confessing that "daft punk on acid rules", jim james performing "the chipmunk song" & " the rainbow connection " at the kids stage, the hold steady sounding very arena ready in front of a huge crowd, patti smith putting on an incredible show in [...]

if you can't handle the crowd, heat & price of lollapalooza (who can blame you), there's still a lot of good music to see in chicago this weekend...tonight, you've got your pick of roky erickson at the abbey pub, the heartless bastards at the empty bottle, ghostland observatory at schubas, sound tribe sector 9 at the house of blues, or clap your hands say yeah, cold war kids, & elvis perkins at the metro...tommorow, southeast engine (above) will be at south union arts , illinois is opening for david vandervelde & the black angels at schubas, white [...]
