Universal Music Group Lawyer fights to maintain grip on reality

In a brief filed in federal court yesterday, Universal Music Group (UMG) states that, when it comes to the millions of promotional CDs ("promo CDs") that it has sent out to music reviewers, radio stations, DJs, and other music industry insiders, throwing them away is "an unauthorized distribution" that violates copyright law. Yes, you read that right - if you've ever received a promo CD from UMG, and you don't still have it, UMG thinks you're a pirate. - EFF Music Writers Will All Be Criminals If Universal Music Group [...]

Pre-Sales mean you are SOL

Jodie Borle of Manitoba Music has a great post on the rise of pre-sales and pre-pre-sales for events that often leave fans going for tickets the day they "go on sale" shit out of luck. There's really nothing "pre" about it. Someone said "let's have people be able to purchase them today." Yeah. That's called on sale. Not presale. I wonder why they even bother telling people that tickets go on sale Saturday. Those poor schmucks that wait till Saturday will be sitting up in the rafters.

What?s it take to be #1 in Canada? Not Very much!

OK - I agree this number is more than some bands will ever sell let alone in one week - but if the idea of developing a plan with such an "ambitious" goal is too much for you to consider you may not be cut out for where things are going in this industry. The number one debut scanning CD nationally in Canada is the new REM and it only scanned 9000 units to make #1 on the national chart. With seven new releases entering the chart in the top [...]

We were broke and now we are fixed (almost)

TWO WEEKS!!! ugh Well I have accomplished plenty in the past two week, learned a fair bit regarding tweaking Wordpress themes - most of it what NOT to do. There was also plenty I missed. Will have to do a post dumping as much as I can into it tomorrow as well as a few back logged posts. There are also still a few things that need to be corrected on the site, but for the most part things are back up and running. I also have a few announcements - new [...]

Facebook vs. MySpace

As of this minute, Coldplay has 392,819 friends on MySpace and 43,156 fans on Facebook. MySpace's Coldplay page has four songs on it; Facebook's one. MySpace's are embeddable on your page; Facebook's are not, yet. MySpace supports for-pay downloads (they're priced absurdly high, but that's not MySpace's fault); Facebook does not. MySpace's page has some [...]

Quote of the Week courtesy of Dolly Parton

"Now the majors are what they used to think I was: history" On decision [and ability] to self release her latest album. Love that attitude. Such ventures still remain the realm of past or current superstars but if such artists continue to self release it will eventually [hopefully] force labels to adjust for the better the deals they [...]

The Mexican Emo Wars [!?!?!]

You can't make shit like this up. Via Exclaim: Chances are if you aren't emo, you hate emo. But you likely don't hate this straight-haired, massacre-lined subculture as much as the Mexicans do. In recent weeks, a wave of emo bashings has swept across Mexico, several news agencies have reported, fuelled by punks, rockabillies, goths, metalheads [...]

Reznor vs. Radiohead: Innovation Smackdown

Go vote over at Wired Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have been taking turns giving the music industry the finger.
