John Fahey - " On the Sunny Side of the Ocean " from The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death (1965) Beautiful composition for a sunny Sunday afternoon. Kudos to (the late) Fahey for paying homage to the wide-eyed mysticism lurking underneath American blues, folk, and old-time music. I hear that Fahey always performed with a jug of moonshine at his side. What a genius. Buy Fahey here Posted by Glenn

Al Green - " How Can You Mend a Broken Heart? " from Let's Stay Together (1972) So sexy, but so sad. And who knew this tune was written by the Brothers Gibb? Buy Rev. Green here Posted by Jordy

Moby Grape - " Someday " from Moby Grape (1967) There are several different things going on in this song at once and they're all perfectly executed. It's hard to believe that it's fewer than three minutes long. All those other San Fran bands can take a hike. Buy Moby Grape here but you may want to wait another month for Sundazed Records to release cheaper, remastered CDs of the groups first three records. Posted by Jordy

Miles Davis - " Stella By Starlight (live) " from 1964: The Complete Concert Check out 1:52, at the very top of the first chorus in time, for a cathartic scream from the audience. The lineup for this 1964 NAACP benefit date was: Miles - trumpet George Coleman - tenor saxophone Herbie Hancock - piano Ron Carter - bass Tony Williams - drums Buy the Miles here to hear announcer Mort Fega's suggestion to "wet your whistle in the lounge" during the [...]

The Clash - " Somebody Got Murdered " from Sandinista! (1980) Somebody did get murdered today at the University of Arizona. A student. She was 18. What a waste. Posted by Jordy

Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band - " I'm Glad " from Safe as Milk (1967) This is one of the more listenable Beefheart tunes. This whole record is made particularly great thanks to Ry Cooder on guit-box. Don't believe me? Then check out the Magic Band doing "Electricity" (also from SaM) on the beach . Incredible. Mad Season - " River of Deceit " from Above (1995) Kudos to (the late) Layne Staley for giving mention to Kahlil Gibran's masterpiece, The Prophet ; a bible for the religionless. Get Mad Season here Get The Prophet here Posted by Jordy

Bill Fox - "From A Dark Night" from Transit Byzantium (1998) After a saucerful of long nighttime travels, wake into a morning where you might feel again. The 2007 Believer Music Issue got me hooked on Bill Fox's beautiful, folky tunes. CMJ declared Fox the most important singer of the late '90s; he toured and put out two modestly successful records; A&R rejected his third record; and he slipped back into crap work, eventually selling his guitar and four-track. The story lends urgency to his music: he's a lost hero. [...]

Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets from Ummagumma (1969) The studio half of this album is overwrought but the live set is some of the best psychedelic jamming of all time. The wordless wailing towards the end is epic. Buy the Floyd here Posted by Jordy
