I knew that the singles released from The Lightning Seeds debut CD Cloudcuckooland included the classic single "Pure" and the decent follow up "All I Want". With a bit of prodding I might have remembered that "Joy" was the other single release. Which made my discovery of this promotional single for "Sweet Dreams" just a little more intriguing. I couldn't say I remembered this track at all from the album - but then again I haven't heard the LP itself in years. So it was kind of a nice surprise. Plus, the two extra tracks - [...]

It was a pleasure to hear from Matt Davis recently, who was the songwriter behind Heyday , who released one gorgeous single, "Come And Go" in 1986. At his request, here are the tracks from the single. Heyday - Come And Go Heyday - This Change of Yours

Fire Next Time - Stay With Me Now (7" Single, 1988) Ice Cold In Alice - Causing A Commotion (7" Single, 1988) Black - Have It Your Own Way (7" Single, 1987) John Adams - Strip This Heart (from Strong , 1987) The Shine - Shadow Dancing (7" Single, 1985) Commentary: I wasn't that thrilled with the last Fire Next Time single I bought, but this one is an absolute belter of a single. I'm still looking for the album, North [...]
By request for McDoc "The specter of Roxy Music haunts "House of Stone," the most well-crafted song on Roaring Boys' self-titled debut album; unfortunately, the rest of the LP is a ghost town. With its bed of lush synthesizers, soothing horns, and romantic vocals, "House of Stone" could have been an apt sequel to Roxy Music's "Avalon." However, "House of Stone" is a burst of inspiration that must have left the band creatively drained, or perhaps they were rushed into the recording studio before they were able to compose equally memorable songs. [...]

Screen 3 - City of Souls (7" Single, 1983) Amazulu - Cairo (7" Single, 1983) Robert Holmes - Angel In The House (7" Single, 1989) The Hostages - Going Up In The World (7" Single, 1984) Ranch - Put Your Love In Me (7" Single, 1985) Here are some of the singles I recently bought through eBay. I can also post the B-Sides if anyone is interested. Robert Holmes was the lead singer of Red Guitars for a time. If anyone [...]
I couldn't quite remember why I rushed to pick up Richard Butler 's debut solo CD when I found it in a bargain bin last year. I think I may have heard something on one of my Rhapsody channels. Anyway, I was driving around last Friday rattling through various mp3's I had picked up over the last year and "Good Days, Bad Days" came up and instantly blew me away. It starts off a little slow, but by the time the sublime guitar parts kick in, you can go ahead and check all the boxes for a [...]

Anna Domino - Tempting (from This Time , 1987) Way of the West - Drum (7" Single, 1982) Electric Guitars - Work (7" Single, 1981) The Honest Johns - Grandfather of Gold (7" Single, 1986) White & Torch - Who's Asking You (7" Single, 1982) Commentary: I don't know much about Anna Domino except she was on a cool label (Crepescule) and I love those fish earrings. The Electric Guitars track is for Simon AKA Torchomatic, otherwise known as "god" [...]
Hello everyone, and thanks again for popping your head round the door from time to time. Here's a few bon mots while I'm in the mood. Today's post title is a reference to Suzanne Vega 's " Small Blue Thing " from her debut album. There's something about the fragility and emotional disconnection in that song that appeals to me ("I am cold against your skin", "I am cool and smooth and curious"). I was en vacances last week, we went to Santa Claus, Indiana , [...]
Sorry they took a while... Midge Ure - Dear God (Extended Mix) Midge Ure - Flowers Midge Ure - Supernatural Instructions - Complete LP (1982) Language - Alphabet City EP (1983) Last Gentlemen - A Kiss For All Seasons EP (1985)
Sorry the place is looking a bit shabby at the moment. I've stopped using Boxstr for my music files and I've now switched to Mediafire, which is working well. In the meantime all the files I had at Fileden have been lost as well. So, while I am updating links and cleaning up, there will be a few duds and missing images. Sorry about that. Lots of requests recently, so I will be putting some of those up this weekend.

Comateens - Resist Her Wide Boy Awake - Bona Venture Pulp - My Lighthouse Blue In Heaven - Across My Heart Public Image Limited - Rise
I'm going to post on a different topic than usual this morning, because I just read a report in the New York Times that just pissed me off, quite frankly. You may recall that earlier this year, a US Airways jet landed in the Hudson river after a birdstrike. The pilot was (rightly) hailed a hero, as he managed to land the plane without the loss of a single life, and most passengers escaped serious injuries. I'm reading about how people are now unsatisfied because they feel they are owed compensation either for loss of possessions [...]

Quando Quango - Atom Rock Roman Holliday - One Foot Back In Your Door Cocteau Twins - Aikea Guinea Fiction Factory - Not The Only One Jamie Rae - Pretty One All of these were released in the same week, in March of 1985. Also released were "We Close Our Eyes" by Go West and "Kiss Me" by Stephen Tin Tin Duffy , but I think you may have already heard those...

I was relaxing in my favorite way this evening, by shuffling through my box of vinyl and thinking about what to play. My hands fell on the original US maxi single of "New Song" by Howard Jones. This extended version is different from the one on The 12" Album and was recently released on CD through Hi-Bias as part of their RetroActive series. As I listened to the second track, "Conditioning", I started thinking about the lyrics. I always liked the line, "Well we think that you are John or Dave", just so different [...]

For the first time ever, I'm posting a completely original mix. I was listening to the haunting song "Valley of Evergreen" by Alternative Radio when I remembered the phrase "they shall not grow old" from a famous poem. I then also remembered a favorite Roald Dahl story of mine which was also called "They Shall Not Grow Old" which has some incredible imagery in it. So I put elements of them all together and played around with it until I liked it. This is dedicated to the brave servicemen and women who have given their lives for our [...]

Rock & Hyde - I Will (from Under The Volcano , 1987) The Rescue - Tell Me Now (from Messages EP, 1984) 400 Blows - Runaway (7" Single, 1985) Instructions - So You Learn From Computers (from Instructions , 1982) Immaculate Fools - Immaculate Fools (from Hearts of Fortune , 1984)
Not sure what to make of the results of Britain's Got Talent which finished tonight. Like many people, I was expecting Susan Boyle to win it, based on her nationwide popularity. Just goes to show, it all depends on what happens on the night. I have a feeling she'll be alright, though. I don't think any solo artist in recent memory will have such an eagerly awaited album. She could probably sell out Vegas tomorrow, but just like any other artist her long term prospects hinge on whether she has the drive and desire to perform [...]
I've never heard of this alternative indie group before, or their self titled debut album released in 1989. It's a solid record, of which this track is typical: Rain People - Distance
I've never seen the 80's teen flick Some Kind of Wonderful , one of several John Hughes put together in a very prolific and commercially successful period. But I am a fan of the soundtrack, which features several relatively obscure cuts by cult artists such as Flesh For Lulu , Pete Shelley and Stephen Duffy . I recently bought the original 1987 CD for just a couple of dollars. Here's some highlights: Lick The Tins - Can't Help Falling In Love The Apartments - The Shyest Time [...]
