Geographer is a new band made up of a trio of boys who create solid music. I've been trying to figure out how to describe their sound and I think I'm stuck on "they sound like the best parts of Joy Electric combined with the best (read: least annoying) bits of Owen Pallet." But if you listen more closely it's like you took that idea and strained it through all your favorite 8-bit video game soundtracks. I'm describing it poorly, so if you'll just oblige my ramblings and have a listen to the songs I've posted below you most likely [...]
I've written a few times about Broadcast 2000 in the past, but it's been a few years since their EP was released. This time around they've upped the ante considerably and released a proper full length aptly titled Broadcast 2000 ( amazon ) ( itunes ). Simply put, every song is wonderful. mp3 : Broadcast 2000 - That Sinking Feeling mp3 : Broadcast 2000 - Your Own Worst Enemy It's great to see a group (which is really a collection of players based around Joe Steer) take [...]
My wife often wonders what I do when I'm sitting on our couch, long after a proper bed time, staring at my laptop. In fact, just the other day, she made the comment that I must keep up with a lot of diverse information because I seem to be reading a lot of the time. While that is partially true I also spend a fair amount of my time listening to random music and watching literally every movie trailer I can get my eyes on. Just last week this activity found me watching a preview for The [...]
First and foremost let me say that I really enjoy Jimmy Fallon. He was brilliant as the one member of the cast who always broke on SNL. His rapport with Tina Fey on Weekend Update was the highlight of that segment's long and storied history. And although he was the surprise pick to replace Coco on Late Night he has been superb in that time slot. For those that are not familiar (or for those that live across ponds) Jimmy has taken the late night talk show and turned it into a sort of geeked out variety show [...]
Last week acclaimed mashup/remix/laptop master Girl Talk pushed out his latest mega mix album entitled All Day. And Gregg Gillis picked the perfect title for this mix which tops out at just over seventy full minutes. It's not exactly club ready, it's not filled with extremely raw or particularly danceable movements, but it is an album that you could easily chill out and listen to all day. mp3 : Girl Talk - Down For The Count mp3 : Girl Talk - Make Me Wanna For those that are looking [...]
With this installment of my reception background music we shall begin moving farther into the territory of "You really played that at your wedding?" Granted, some of these songs aren't typical wedding fodder, but they are all amazing songs. They also all fit the mood of singer songwriter music that is both interesting and captivating while also being of a similar aural aesthetic. Enjoy the music. I know I did. One of the greatest comments I received throughout my wedding and reception was a frequently repeated phrase, "This music is really good." It gave an already amazing day [...]
And so continues the seemingly never ending posts about my wedding. For those new to this series I have been posting the entire list of music that my wife and I painstakingly pieced together for our wedding. I started with the Ceremony and now I'm posting my way through the Reception. The background music for the cocktails and dinner was a list that was left completely up to me and I decided to mash together a massive load of my favorite music (with little regard to era, style, genre, etc.) Some of this music hails from my childhood [...]
I have been privileged, over the past four years, to be exposed to an extreme range of music due to my writings here on TWF. I still receive a healthy does of random emails from promoters and bands alike and I do my best to at least click on the random myspace link or watch the latest music video over on vimeo or youtube. As I've said before, however, much of the music that I am sent isn't quite ready to be talked about in a positive manner. There is something missing from many acts. All of this makes it [...]
And so it continues, the endless supply of awesome songs that I was allowed to play at my wedding. This section, played as background music during the cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and dinner at our reception, was left entirely up to me to arrange. To keep the list coherent I gave my self a few limiting factors. Mostly all of the songs conform to the following criteria; a) songs must be music I would be willing to admit I listen to and enjoy, b) most of the music is to be by singer-songwriters, c) the music needs to span a variety [...]
As I mentioned earlier I was privileged enough to see Jonsi play live in Salt Lake City a few weeks back. The opening act was the oddly named Mountain Man (it's a group of three younger ladies) and they started their set with a haunting acapella song. The song contained lyrics about falling ten hundred feet and a father and a son. The song stuck with me enough that a few weeks later I went on an internet hunt (which I never imagined would be difficult, but proved to be quite a trek). Regardless, Mountain Man and incessant [...]
To be fair I'm not really a fan of The Good Natured. I'm not entirely sure where they fit into the whole electro-pop eighties revival that is currently sweeping the nation (and on top of that the mall goth chic that front lady Sarah McIntosh seems to be cultivating is, well, lame). But I digress. I was recently tipped to this cover they have of one of the greatest Sufjan Stevens tracks that he has ever recorded. It might not save their career, but it's nice to see a potential up and coming act reach out and pay homage to [...]
And so the Wedding Music posts continue (with plenty more to come). After this volume the rest of the music is pretty much a mix tape filled with awesome. During the ceremony we linked together songs that all had a similar tone and vibe and built upon the theme of a traditional yet contemporary ceremony. Hence the use of Vitamin String Quartet and other modern acts. In this final Ceremony volume there are four tracks that were played while the guests were being dismissed from the church. We probably could have added another track into this time, but [...]
This is volume 02 of the Wedding Music series. As stated before much of this list was an exercise in compromise between my wife and I. Ultimately I was very happy with the music we came up with (and that might be because she gave me complete free reign for background music at the reception. Stay tuned for those posts). If you'd like to see all of my Wedding Music click here to see this entire series. Below are the tracks that we used during the actual ceremony. At one point in time we [...]
I have now been married almost four months. And as evidence that married life directly affects the amount of free time a person has I submit this blog post. It has been four months and I am just now getting around to posting the music that I played at my wedding. As with almost every decision that surrounds a wedding (and a healthy marriage) a great deal of compromise went into this list of songs. At certain points in the list (and I will make sure to point them out) I was given free [...]

Sufjan Stevens has released his latest epic album, The Age of Adz ( amazon ) ( itunes ), into the world and it has been met with generally favorable although somewhat mixed reviews. What many negative reviews seem to be forgetting is that it has been a full five years since we've heard any new music from Sufjan. Quite simply this is not the same man who gave us Illinois and Michigan. This is a new variation on the old beast. The best way I can describe the new album is to think of it as [...]
Well this is what it feels like to post on The World Forgot. It's been so long I was worried I would lose my usual self deprecating panache. Fret not. I have been busy. Busy with a real life that has included random business trips, planning a future, settling in with my wife, and playing video games. Fortunately, on one of the aforementioned business trips, I found myself with a free evening. And on that evening it just so happened that Jonsi was playing a concert within walking distance of my hotel. Seeing Jonsi in concert is akin [...]
A few weeks back I was sitting on a stationary bike reading a random issue of Rolling Stone that magically appeared in my mailbox without address, postage, or any indication as to how it appeared there. So I sat there, cycling in place, reading how Rolling Stone thinks that Arcade Fire is the new Radiohead and I couldn't help but laugh. I had a good chuckle, really, and I found myself assured that it was articles like this that kept me from ever subscribing to Rolling Stone. I'm sure they're a fine group of writers, they probably all have families, [...]
If you've heard this song in your blessed life you most likely have already heard this version of it. Iron and Wine take a rather forgettable track from one of the weirdest acts in modern music (and by weird I mean their live show is the most random concert I have ever witnessed) and instantly transforms it into something worth listening to again and again on repeat. mp3 : Iron and Wine - Waiting for a Superman (Flaming Lips Cover) As we transition into the greatest season (yes, I do declare that the [...]
Cloud Cult is not a typical band for many reasons. They drive a bio diesel tour bus, they founded their own label (Earthology Records) to make sure they could offset the carbon involved in the production of their albums, they have two painters create art on stage during shows, and they have routinely turned down record deal after record deal (oft from major labels). On their latest album, Light Chasers ( amazon ) ( itunes ), Cloud Cult proves once again why they are a special act. In an age that is dominated by single song [...]
