On sophomore LP Happy Birthday, Her Parents bring a dismissive fury and gleeful idiocy to punk. The album zips by at 12 songs in 18 minutes, pushing a middle finger and a manic grin into your face with childish impudence, mocking you for dancing while providing the jams. They're clearly aware of that, to the extreme degree that there's even an infectious song called "Why Are You Hitting Yourself". "Your mother was a racist moody moo/spitting out kids from her loony womb," they sneer on "I Live In A Tree", one of many schoolyard taunts set to [...]
A few weeks back, Managing Editor Jeremy Larson provided a thought-provoking feature on the moralization of music . For the past 16 years, Mindless Self Indulgence have created a cult following similarly examining the morals of Americans and popular music. Now in his 40s, frontman Jimmy Urine continues his agitation of social standards on How I Learned to Stop Giving a Shit and Love Mindless Self Indulgence. When Tyler, The Creator, the central antagonist of Larson's piece, was only nine years old, MSI was already generating criticism with "Faggot". Like Tyler, the intent was to shock; however, Urine's messages were meant to shed [...]
The whiskey, blood, and holy water from last year’s estimable Blues Funeral had barely dried up when Mark Lanegan partnered with English bluesman Duke Garwood to record Black Pudding , an album that crawls, breathes, and refurbishes the acoustic blues of Lanegan’s early solo work. Here, as the shared billing suggests, Lanegan’s rugged voice and Garwood’s delicate playing intend to speak to each other. Only part of the time, though, do the two seem to be participating in the same conversation. The trouble with Black Pudding [...]

The Top MP3s have gone through many incarnations since the beginning of Consequence of Sound in 2007. For 2013, we’re again changing up the format with the hope of giving our selections some added weight. We’re still posting about our 10 favorite songs, but they’ll be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who takes home #1 this week? You’ll have to click ‘Next’ to find [...]

This is usually the part where we'd say, "Welcome to Dissected , where we disassemble a band’s catalogue in the abstract. It’s exact science by way of a few beers." But here's a curveball for everyone: we're gonna flip the script and let an actual band do all the heavy lifting. And perhaps there's no other outfit better suited for this little experiment than California's own Camper Van Beethoven . Formed in 1983 in Redlands, CA, Camper came of age in a time when every young male musician took their unkempt angst and joined [...]

Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd returns tonight with the title track to his new album, Kiss Land . It's a hyper-sexual seven-and-a-half minute track that's as sinister as it is psychedelic. (Philip Chevron, pictured middle right) Philip Chevron, guitarist of Celtic punk legends The Pogues , has been diagnosed with inoperable cancer. It had been thought that Chevron fully recovered from head and neck cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2007, but doctors discovered a new tumor in April 2012. Due to the position of the tumor, operating on it would "almost certainly cause a stroke or worse." A statement released today notes, "The cancer is, in short, inoperable and will prove fatal in time, though it is at present impossible to measure life expectancy." [...]

"We always try to [...]

Already a member of Vivian Girls and the brains behind La Sera , Katy Goodman has formed a new band alongside The Hush Sound's Greta Morgan. Books of Love was born out of a notion to combine elements of science and sci-fi with good old fashioned poppy love songs. Or, as the duo themselves write: While hiking past the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, friends Katy Goodman and Greta Morgan were struck with the idea to record a song together: A song about physics and love, science [...]

Experimental artist Julianna Barwick will release her third album, Nepenthe , on August 20th via Dead Oceans. The followup to 20112s The Magic Place and last year's OMBRE project with Helado Negro was recorded in Reykjavik, Iceland and produced by musician Alex Somers (Sigur Rós, Jónsi). According to a press release, the word nepenthe – a magic drug of forgetfulness used to wipe out grief, referenced often in ancient Greek literature – struck a deep chord with Barwick, who had experienced a death in the family during the recording process and [...]

Surprise, surprise: director Sofia Coppola ( Lost in Translation , The Virgin Suicides ) has put together another hip-as-hell soundtrack for tweens, teens, and shattered twentysomethings. What's more, she's recruited Oneohtrix Point Never's Daniel Lopatin to score the film. For this project, Lopatin's again working [...]

The dream duo of Thom Yorke and Dominic West, a.k.a. Jimmy McNulty from The Wire , have joined forces for a new feature-length documentary. Written and directed by Mark Donne, The UK Gold chronicles tax evasion within the United Kingdom. Set against last summer's Olympics Games in London, the story follows "a vicar from a small parish in the London Borough of Hackney as he goes head to head with an ancient and mighty heavyweight, revealing its central status as the tax-haven nerve centre of the world." [...]

The Crystal Method , the Los Vegas-based, Grammy Award-winning electronic duo, have been forced to push back the release of their new studio album, and a number of upcoming tour dates have been canceled, as co-founder Scott Kirkland continues to recover from brain surgery. As Kirkland explained in a lengthy statement issued to fans, he began to experience painful headaches a few months. Doctors discovered a "benign posterior fossa arachnoid cyst in his brain," which could have caused complications "due to my tendency to get a little excited on stage." He had surgery on April 11th, 2013 and [...]

For latest track off his forthcoming Kismet mixtape , Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire finally puts to wax "Illest Niggaz Breathin'". The track's been a live favorite for well over a year now, and was originally intended to be the lead single off the Power & Passion EP . Having secured the proper clearances for the Mortal Kombat sample (no doubt going through Shao Kahn), eXquire eschews his recent clarity and vulnerability for more outright indignation, attacking critics and the world alike with pure venom ("Heard rumors of my demise/But somehow [...]

Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus chants, "Bring back the dudes!" in the beginning of the video, the unofficial name of the band's spring tour with dude friends The So So Glos . When dudes are together, they are wont to bring out some blue-collar covers of hometown pride. Previously, Titus Andronicus covered "Born To Run" with Diarrhea Planet, and now So So Glos and Titus team up for the Beastie Boys anthem "No Sleep Til Brooklyn", honoring the So So Glos' home turf. Watch the two punk bands fight for their right to [...]

In a new interview with Rolling Stone , Thurston Moore opened up about the future (or non-future) of Sonic Youth , his new outfit Chelsea Light Moving , and how he doesn't own a set of keys to anywhere in New York. As you can imagine, it was a very candid interview. On the potential of a Sonic Youth reunion: "I would never say I don't see why not. Life changes from time to time and who knows what will happen in the future. Your crystal [...]

Spectrals is the project of Yorkshire musician Louis Jones, who crafted an Elvis Costello-inspired blend of pop, soul, doo-wop, and garage rock on his 2011 debut, Bad Penny . On June 18th, Jones will return with the outfit's sophomore record, Sob Story , via Slumberland Records. Produced by ex-Girls member Chet "JR" White, the 12-track LP finds Jones leaving behind his beloved reverb and doo-wop to embrace the country and rockabilly of iconic Welsh rocker Dave Edmunds. For a taste of the more "confident" Jones, he's unveiled the title track, or [...]
