Albums that are influential, groundbreaking and still memorable. A brand new single from Mahogany was released yesterday, digitally. The new EP that was promised last spring through BLVD Records is most likely not happening, or is it? I mean it’s been a year already. “Phase Break” is gorgeous and dives deep into an extended funky bridge that is very uncharacteristic of the band, but it fits their sound/aesthetic/style extremely well so you’ll glide right into it. “Don’t Play With Guns” is the first single from Indigo Meadow , the forthcoming album from The Black Angels due April 2 on Blue Horizon. The Austin psych-rockers will play the beautiful Mayan Theater here in Los Angeles on May 21 — not to be missed.
My top three full-lengths of 2013 so far are these knuckleheads you see above. The Veronica Falls album is certainly the most consistent of the bunch, but in terms of sound design and jaw-dropping bursts of noise, Autechre and My Bloody Valentine are unmatched.
Fans of Cocteau Twins: this is your new aural drug. A lot of bands in the past few years are obviously trying to bring back this sound, which I’m not against at all, but Empress of (Lorely Rodriguez) does it best. It sounds so precisely like that era with the synths, drum machine tones, and her vocal phrasing, but “Hat Trick” is also leaner and ultra-shimmery. It works.
