TEENAGERSINTOKYO

TEENAGERSINTOKYO Hooked with Back Yard Records in the UK and currently hard at work on their debut LP with the one and only Dave Kosten, it's pretty clear that Teenagersintokyo are poised to become Australia's biggest new musical export. They've come a hell of a long way since first emerging with End It Tonight, as evidenced from their new single Isabella, which basically has the Teenz sounding the best that they ever have. This is big, driving, dark indie. It sounds great. Teenagersintokyo - Isabella [ YS ] [...]

ASTRONOMER

ASTRONOMER Astonomer is the soon to be not-so-top-secret project from one plucky British DJ/producer, and he's seriously been nailing it lately with all 'round stellar mixes for the likes of Clouded Vision and UK darlings The Xx. Dude is also a Grindin family member so that just makes him even better. We've been lucky enough to get a hold of some of his latest remixes for some blog love, including his take on Micachu and his really excellent reworking of the new Metronomy single, Not Made For Love. That might be my favourite from him so far. Definitely [...]

THE MARY ONETTES

THE MARY ONETTES The delightful Swedes over at Labrador continue their stellar track record with their next release, this time coming from my favourite romantic guitar pop revivalists The Mary Onettes . I'll never understand how these guys never got bigger than they did as their first, self-titled LP was a true favourite back in 2007. Thankfully, the quartet have excelled since then, already releasing the terrific Dare earlier this year, and now even surpassing that lofty tune with Puzzles. Love the drama here. Very high hopes for the new album. The Mary Onettes [...]

PENGUIN PRISON

PENGUIN PRISON A source of constant blog excellence is Derek over at Neon Gold Recs , who've been behind gold-plated releases from the likes of Wolf Gang, Your Twenties and Passion Pit (maybe you've heard of them?) in a matter of months. Seriously, being the heavyweight snob that I am, I rarely trust that many people for music recommendations, but Derek is always on point, serving as my own personal oracle for what I'll be listening to for the next month. His latest find is Penguin Prison , a young dude repping New York City and [...]

AMY MEREDITH

AMY MEREDITH Australian scene slayers Amy Meredith are no strangers to a hot remix, with spins from The Phantom's Revenge and the almighty Gloves already behind them. The latest joint to hit the blogs is from the much sought-after producer Diamond Cut , who's absolutely killed this mix for AM's upcoming 'Pornstar' single. It's eerily reminiscent of classic-blog house remixes, with plenty of sweeping synths and powerful beats. Discodust will be premiering the original remix cut super soon, but in the meantime check out the equally impressive dub mix below. [...]

AEONS

AEONS Mandu from Electrorash has been bugging me to do a post about Aeons for zonks now (just quietly, what exactly is a zonk anyway?) and I'm glad he's been persistent because they've got a whole lot going on! There's definitely a quasi-Presets vibe going on with these tracks, especially on Beyond The Satellites, which has those camp piano pricks and big room synth work. The duo are picking up more and more work so hopefully this is just the beginning of big things to come. Keep your eyes out. Aeons [...]

BMX

BMX These are nearly two months old now (which is like, what, 3 blog years?) but it doesn't matter, because to me at least any BMX is good BMX. Listening to their latest demos you can note that the Australian collective have tweaked their style ever so slightly, still hitting that same party-friendly nerve with bubbly synths and call and response voclas, but now it's got a decidedly more organic feel to things. And that's a total win. Look out for more from BMX undoubtedly coming soon. BMX - Love D [...]

GIRLS

GIRLS Girls have been on constant repeat for the last, well, ever now. Having emerged out of the San Francisco scrawl with equal amounts of garage-y bite and sun-soaked psychedelica in their grasp, their debut album, literally just called Album, is a treasure to behold. For those who've missed their sublime first single Hellhole Ratrace, get into it below. Whilst it's nothing near radio friendly, it charmed me from the first listen and I still love it. The album has more wonders just like this and is out next month. Girls - Hellhole Ratrace [...]

LIFELIKE

LIFELIKE Okay okay, so Lifelike ends up churning out like two remixes every month and some people begin to complain about over-saturation, etc. Nuts to them, I say. It would be tedious if the mixes were all the same, but as is the case with Lifelike, he manages to sprinkle some very unique magic over every track he touches. Take this, his latest mix for Baxter. Even though electro bangers have been surpassed by chill gaze (right, CRLS?) I simply love this to bits. Baxter - Proof (Lifelike Remix) [YS] REMOVED [...]

VISITOR

VISITOR Although the news of the band's demise was unfortunate and untimely for those who followed UK kids Cobra Dukes, there's seemingly a dazzlingly bright light at the end of the tunnel. Out of the ashes of Cobra Dukes comes... Visitor . Much like the group's cosmically charged name implies, Visitor are very much of the dreamy, synth-driven variety. It's on the duo's debut demo, Los Feeling, that they show off their talent for crafting futuristic pop with gleaming synths and genuine hooks. That should come as no surprise when you learn that Visitor has been working [...]

TIM & JEAN

TIM & JEAN Tim & Jean have been causing quite a stir down here in Australia of late with their excellent track Come Around riddling the playlists over at triple j (our biggest youth broadcaster, natch). Now I think it's prime to expose the lads to a wider audience. Come Around hurtles out the blocks with giddy synthesizers and youthful abandon, shooting straight for the ear with its infectious energy. That's simple enough for me to type but it's often difficult for a band to capture on record. I assure you though, Tim & Jean nail it. Much has been [...]

CANVAS KITES

CANVAS KITES Sydney's Canvas Kites have emerged from the ruins of Hyperbole favourites Mercy Arms, who called it quits earlier this year despite just releasing a positively fantastic debut album. Thankfully, Canvas Kites manage to keep the departed-Mercies spirit alive with their jangly indie schtick in tact and Thom Moore's floaty vocals still residing front and centre. But this isn't just a rehash of the old formula, Canvas Kites steer towards a sunnier, more relaxed style and it definitely works. Hopefully this is just the start of things to come. [...]

ARTWORK

ARTWORK I've been meaning to post some stuff about Artwork for, like, ever now but since I'm me about two thousand things got in the way. My bad. But thankfully I copped a healthy reminder/feel last week from RCRD LBL who released Artwork's brand new remix for Passion Pit. Catch that in the link below, because it's not only brilliant, but it's also terrific to see a relatively young production act begin to get bigger commissions! HEY TODAY

HEY TODAY Top notch bangers are an increasingly rare commodity these days, but you can always trust an act like Hey Today to provide the goods when you're in need of some four to the floor thumping hugeness. Their latest tune comes courtesy of a Bang Gang 12 Inches online promo, and is the duo's take on the old Armand Van Helden track. And I say that not having ever heard the original because I'm not, y'know, 32 years old. Anyway, grab it, smash it, do as you will, it's just a little taste [...]

MEMORY TAPES

MEMORY TAPES Admittedly, I was late to the game on both Weird Tapes and Memory Cassette. And that's my bad, because I was missing out on some true magic. Thankfully, I've been following their partnership as Memory Tapes up to the minute and it does not disappoint. Their debut single together, Bicycle, is probably in my top 15 tracks of 2009 so far, with its unexpected twists and turns of psychedelica and electronic quirks. People have been big-upping the Horrors' remix of that tune, and whilst it is indeed some haunted greatness, the original is still trumps. If [...]

LIFELIKE

LIFELIKE Further proof that Lifelike is in fact the most wondrous producer out there. I really didn't think I could feel more for this song other than marginal affection for the Alan Braxe disco production on it, but damn, Lifelike makes it into pure magic. Stripping back the bulk of Killa Kela's vocals and loooooping the immaculate string arrangement it suddenly becomes this pristine, tightly-packed little disco thumper. You need this in your life, or at least in your iTunes. Killa Kela - Everyday (Lifelike Remix) [ YS ] [...]

BAG RAIDERS

BAG RAIDERS I think we've already established that Bag Raiders ' Shooting Stars is one of the most perfect songs in the last few years, if not the history of civilization, so it's joyous to see that the boys' new home, Modular, are pushing the glorious single out to the masses. That involves a shiny new video for the single as well as some extra shiny remixes from the likes of Kris Menace, In Flagranti, Siriusmo, Cassian and Shazam. The Menace and Cassian mixes are top notch stuff, never trying to top the original, but just add a new [...]
