The delightful Swedes over at Labrador continue their stellar track record with their next release, this time coming from my favourite romantic guitar pop revivalists The Mary Onettes . I'll never understand how these guys never got bigger than they did as their first, self-titled LP was a true favourite back in 2007. The latest joint to hit the blogs is from the much sought-after producer Diamond Cut , who's absolutely killed this mix for AM's upcoming 'Pornstar' single. It's eerily reminiscent of classic-blog house remixes, with plenty of sweeping synths and powerful beats. Mandu from Electrorash has been bugging me to do a post about Aeons for zonks now (just quietly, what exactly is a zonk anyway?) and I'm glad he's been persistent because they've got a whole lot going on! There's definitely a quasi-Presets vibe going on with these tracks, especially on Beyond The Satellites, which has those camp piano pricks and big room synth work. These are nearly two months old now (which is like, what, 3 blog years?) but it doesn't matter, because to me at least any BMX is good BMX. Listening to their latest demos you can note that the Australian collective have tweaked their style ever so slightly, still hitting that same party-friendly nerve with bubbly synths and call and response voclas, but now it's got a decidedly more organic feel to things. Okay okay, so Lifelike ends up churning out like two remixes every month and some people begin to complain about over-saturation, etc. Nuts to them, I say. It would be tedious if the mixes were all the same, but as is the case with Lifelike, he manages to sprinkle some very unique magic over every track he touches. Take this, his latest mix for Baxter. Tim & Jean have been causing quite a stir down here in Australia of late with their excellent track Come Around riddling the playlists over at triple j (our biggest youth broadcaster, natch). Now I think it's prime to expose the lads to a wider audience. Sydney's Canvas Kites have emerged from the ruins of Hyperbole favourites Mercy Arms, who called it quits earlier this year despite just releasing a positively fantastic debut album. Thankfully, Canvas Kites manage to keep the departed-Mercies spirit alive with their jangly indie schtick in tact and Thom Moore's floaty vocals still residing front and centre. But this isn't just a rehash of the old formula, Canvas Kites steer towards a sunnier, more relaxed style and it definitely works. Hopefully this is just the start of things to come. [...]

Admittedly, I was late to the game on both Weird Tapes and Memory Cassette. And that's my bad, because I was missing out on some true magic. Thankfully, I've been following their partnership as Memory Tapes up to the minute and it does not disappoint. Their debut single together, Bicycle, is probably in my top 15 tracks of 2009 so far, with its unexpected twists and turns of psychedelica and electronic quirks. Further proof that Lifelike is in fact the most wondrous producer out there. I really didn't think I could feel more for this song other than marginal affection for the Alan Braxe disco production on it, but damn, Lifelike makes it into pure magic.
