You sure have changed Sia. Sorry, that was lame. Let's start all over. Sia, who happens to be one of my favorite artists ever , decided to give her fans a taste of what she's been working on to follow up 2007's Some People Have Real Problems . So yesterday, she Tweeted a download link of "You've Changed", which will appear on her forthcoming album, We Are Born . The first thing you will notice about "You've Changed" is that it is danceable (!!), something Sia hasn't bothered [...]

I personally find it rather frustrating when a band member decides to launch a solo career but simply ends up sounding like the original band he/she was originally a part of. It makes me wonder: what's the point? But of course, that's the fan talking in me and we all know fans have no regard for musicians lives or feelings and only want our music tastes to be satisfied. Nevertheless, I can say I am satisfied with "Give Blood," Kyp Malone (of TV on the Radio)'s [...]
Photo by Sarah Murphy Jurado Holy crap is " River of Love" chessy. I mean, it's called River of Love , seriously, by the group United State of Electronica – a band that self identifies as "disco pop." Completely, unabashedly, poppy and over the top – the little snare hit, the snappy guitar riffs, and of course the alternately auto-tune-crooning and soaring-coed-chorus vocals. From the first twenty seconds of this song you know exactly what the next three and a half minutes are going to sound [...]

Photo by meik meik So a few weeks ago, CMJ was happening, and we were all running around like dance crazed party girls. Now that the dust has more than officially settled, we can tell you that some pretty cool shit went down. We talked to some folks. We caught some shows. One of the people we talked to was Lucas Guerin of electro funk rock band Casxio. Emerging on the scene quite effectively with their EP Seventeen (released on The Hours Entertainment records) the video for the single views [...]
Photo courtesy of Little Dragon's Myspace Page . Is there something in the water in Gothenburg, Sweden? The Knife, The Tough Alliance, Jose Gonzalez, Jens Lekman, and now Little Dragon – those damn Swedes just keep pumping out irresistible pop melodies in a variety of weird incarnations. Little Dragon's track "Runabout" is certainly a slice of quirky pop, but it is uniquely, wonderfully sun-soaked; the soundtrack to a leisurely bike ride on the nicest day of summer, when you're headed to your best friend's house or the beach or a BBQ. [...]

Don't forget to rate the album at the end of the post. Welcome back to Blinded By The Hype, the PMA feature in which we revisit albums once the hype has died down. In today's world, music is released at a machine gun pace. It's a what-have-you-done-for-me-late ly type scene, and "lately" usually means this week. Rarely do we stop to smell the roses. Even good albums get overlooked as time passes. And we almost never – aside from year end lists – take a look backward. Hindsight is 20-20, and we'd like to apply that retrovision [...]

Photo by Kirstie Shanley "Fright Lined Dining Room" is one of the three unreleased tracks to back the Arctics' second single " Cornerstone " off Humbug , which we were crazy about . Alex Turner told Uncut Magazine that he wrote the song "one morning, quite quickly" adding that, "there's something to be said for writing in the morning. At other points in the day you're a bit more defensive. I saw it as a challenge to write something in a major key, but that wasn't cheesy." Truly profound [...]

Karen Dancing In The Rain (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Osheaga 2009 Montreal) by Anirudh Koul Rarely am I at a loss of words. Rarely is "wow" the only thing I am able to express audibly. "Hysteric," when played live, is one of the few songs that make the words fall out of my head and out of my reach. I was fortunate enough to catch "Hysteric" live at one of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' famously hyperactive shows this summer, and I was spellbound by the beauty of [...]

Other pretty much amazing happenings in the music blogophere that I probably won't be writing about: Watch Lil Wayne's The Carter Documentary in its entirety at First Up! Listen to and download Amerie's "Tell Me You Love Me" at Fluxblog . It's really f'n great. Gorilla vs Bear has the music video of the Golden Filter's "Thunderbird" available for your viewing pleasure - oh and an mp3 too if you want to grab that. Download the latest compilation by the electro label Kitsune [...]

Lady GaGa on Gossip Girl Last night's episode of Gossip Girl featured a lot of Lady Gaga (and even a performance by GaGa). So much that it was almost ridiculous. This GaGa injection was, no doubt, in promotion of Lady GaGa's upcoming album The Fame Monster . The episode prominently featured Monster "Bad Romance" and "Made in the Dark" - in fact, after Lady GaGa's performance of "Bad Romance" on Gossip Girl, the song has climbed to the No. 1 stop on iTunes. But the standout GaGa track featured on Gossip Girl [...]

Click here to view the embedded video. In many ways, the new music video for "Ready, Able" matches my feelings for the lush track off of Veckatimest , one of the year's best albums. The video's best moments (see colorful melting at :47, potential alien abduction at 1:53, and awesome clay, stop-motion transformations at 3:26) come at the song's most thrilling moments- jolts of orchestration and psychedelic jamming are recreated with colorful, magnificent feats of claymation. The video is also strange and original, much like the song with its oddly unorthodox [...]

Photo by Filkoe I saw Tune-Yards (not TuNe-YaRdS, as I'm afraid of my shift key) open for the Dirty Projectors last week while visiting the cold and wet Salt Lake City. I had no idea who they (I later found out it was just a she) were, but the gorgeous, all-over-the-spectrum noises this woman was making, all on her own, mind you, was downright awesome . As Merrill Garbus (the woman) banged and bellowed and wailed through her set, I excitedly tweeted about the excellence my ears were treated to. [...]

Photo by Punk Photo Sleigh Bells is the loud, creative forced brought to life by Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss. Derek played in a hardcore band, and Alexis well, she was a, uh... school teacher who played in a pop group in her teenage years. With a winning combination like that, you're bound to to make some noise . Sleigh Bells are, by most accounts, a new band with a fresh take on pop music, and their EP really hits it out of the park. They demanded everyone's [...]

The xx performed and recorded a Black Session for the French radio station France Inter FM on October 26th. Their set was basically a run through of their debut album XX . I would have loved some spontaneity from the band. Maybe throw in their Florence + the Machine cover ? Either way, it was fun to hear them mess around with the instrumental arrangements somewhat on their session. I also want to take the time to officially retract PMA's review of the xx's album . We were, you might say, blinded by the immense [...]

Best Albums of 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09 2007 might just be my favorite year for music releases this decade. Unfortunately, many, many great albums were left out of this list. It was pretty hard leave them out, but I couldn't press the little blue "Publish" button without any of the following albums on the list: [...]

Reader's Choice: Artic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Was anyone shocked to see Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not win the popular vote for Best of 2006? If you were, you were probably born in 2007… just woke up from a 4 year coma. The album is stunningly simple. Its guitar work and lightening quick vocals are basic, but there's genius in that simplicity. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not feels rough around the edges, but [...]
