New Rye Rye: "Shake Twist Drop" f/ Tyga

Rye Rye - Shake Twist Drop (Audio) ft. Tyga
Rye Rye is seriously channelling M.I.A.'s "Bird Flu" on new track "Shake Twist Drop" (it doesn't quite sound like a sample to us). But once you, uh, shake off the initial quirk of déjà vu, it isn't difficult to succumb to Rye Rye's dancefloor provocations. Rack City Bitch Tyga makes a brief appearance, shining some of his spotlight on the track. Listen to the track below: Continue reading: New Rye Rye: "Shake Twist Drop" f/ Tyga Read more [...]

MP3: A$AP Rocky x Purity Ring – "Pesobedear" (The Hood Internet)

Being the skilled audio splicers that they are, Chicago's ABX and STV SLV take A$AP Rocky's mixtape hit "Peso" and seamlessly lay it over an impossibly fast sample of Purity Ring's very, very excellent new single "Obedear." Usually we'd think something like a mash-up of A$AP Rocky and Purity Ring would be nothing but an attempt to pander the so-called hip set, but damn if The Hood Internet didn't just pull this off. Continue [...]

Awesome: Shabazz Palaces remix Lushlife

Shabazz Palaces remixing Lushlife 's Plateau Vision highlight "Hale-Bopp was the Bedouins" pretty much means that everyone doing cool shit in indie rap (for lack of a better phrase) is on this track now – Shabazz's Ishmael Butler drops a typically creepy verse in which he sounds like an outer-space wise man and chops and screws the original's Gang Gang Dance sample (yes) into a stuttering, offbeat droney stagger; let's not forget that Das Racist's Heems is on this track to begin with (but his vocals, [...]

Previously Unreleased My Bloody Valentine: "Good For You"

Seminal shoegazers My Bloody Valentine (or at least the band's frontman Kevin Shields ) have been dropping hints of new music this year, but this previously unheard MBV track isn't brand new. You can check out "Good For You" now, courtesy the band's CD re-releases of their two records, Isn't Anything and Loveless , and a collection of EPs. It's a driving, awesomely catchy post-punk jam, with a weird and deconstructed guitar riff we can't get enough of – typically MBV massive, but somehow way catchier than their usual fare. [...]

New: The Gaslight Anthem – "45″

The Gaslight Anthem aren't ashamed to follow in the footsteps of their fellow New Jersian Bruce Springsteen – they've spent three great albums making driving, riff-packed rock that's emotional without being pathetic (far from it), passionate but not overbearing, drawing inspiration from the Boss as well as other big names in American classic rock. Their new single "45" speaks to tradition in more than one way – the surface level might be the most obvious (they're talking about vinyl, guys!) but listen to that limitlessly catchy riff and that chugging groove and you might be [...]

Review: Lower Dens – Nootropics

Lower Dens - Brains
Lower Dens Nootropics out on 5.1 MP3 | CD | Vinyl | Stream A- After a decade of stumbling from project to project, honing her craft, and building a loyal following, Jana Hunter seems to have finally found the band she was looking for. She has discussed her admiration for the most recent members of Lower Dens (guitarist William Adams, bassist Geoffrey Graham, drummer Nate Nelson, and keyboardist Carter Tanton) saying that "this [...]

That Was Fun: April 2012

April 2012. Coachella happened... twice . Kanye West dropped a single... twice . Lana Del Rey collaborated with the internet's most buzzed about rapper... twice . Listen to Passion Pit Side Project TEAM SPIRIT: "Fuck the Beach"

In the interim between Passion Pit 's 2009 record Manners and its just-announced upcoming follow-up Gossamer , the band's members have been keeping pretty busy, what with remixes, side projects, their own independent record labels, and incessant touring. Synth dude Ayad Al Adhamy is the next to add his name to the roster of killer Passion Pit side projects with TEAM SPIRIT , his band of crunchy power-pop garage rock. It's a pretty far cry from his day job's sexy synth grooves, but his ear for [...]

The Irresistible and Strange Pop of Foxes

New: Hot Panda – "Future Markets"

We're not sure what to say about the Vancouver quartet Hot Panda that you can't infer from the first single from their upcoming LP Go Outside , "Future Markets" – funky bass and tribal beats anchor dispossessed vocals, processed guitars, and metallic drones that seethe from zero to sixty, by which we mean quiet, percolating fuzz to all-out panic attack, in milliseconds flat. At its soft moments it sounds like driving wooded back roads in the dark in the rain, when it snaps it sounds like the monster caught in your headlights when you turn the corner. [...]
