Holy Ghost! – “Dumb Disco Ideas”

Holy Ghost! "Dumb Disco Ideas"
"dumb disco idea #1 - release brand new single called "dumb disco ideas" day after world gets new daft punk stream." So tweeted DFA records yesterday after unleashing the new Holy Ghost! single. It may not really count for anything since Daft Punk are what they are, but we've taken a quicker liking to "Dumb Disco Ideas" than that stream that was released the other day . It's a sprawling eight minute disco jam, and it's lovely. Check it out in the pretty youtube below. This is [...]

Video: Kendrick Lamar – “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”

Kendrick Lamar - Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe (Explicit)
An all-white funeral and a party in a field. A baptism in liquor. You won't find a bigger fan of Kendrick Lamar's stuff, but I really don't "get" this one at all. Which may be the point – to deny us legions of TDE Stans the escapism of a silky smooth big-budget hip-hop video. "Death to molly" says the closing shot. Take your party out of the club and into nature below. Read more articles like " Video: Kendrick Lamar - "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" " on PMA [...]

Banks + TEED – “Warm Water”

I hope I see these words again: "Written by Banks . Produced by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs ." This one is just a single, but the vibe of producer and singer here seem to go together perfectly. It's warm, aqueous pop, probably making "Warm Water" the most aptly named bit of pop that you'll see today. You'll be able to purchase this one on May 27. Oh and by the way, if you ever feel like calling Banks up, just dial (323) 362-2658. #via [...]

James Holden – “Renata”+ Daphni remix

Behold, new James Holden . His new single "Renata" and the remix by Daphni (née Caribou ) is described by his record label collectively as an "arpeggio extravaganza," which does a more-than-apt job of capturing in a phrase the frenzied feeling of unfolding. Both are beautiful and enveloping, such that when the song ends, the quiet of my music-less room feels a little louder. This single release is in celebration of Holden's new LP, The Inheritors . Vampire Weekend’s Triumphant Return to Saturday Night Live

Over the weekend, Vampire Weekend gave an excellent performance for SNL at 30 Rock's Studio 8H. The quartet churned memorable renditions of Modern Vampires highlights "Diane Young" and my current personal favorite, "Unbelievers." Beloved alumnus Kristen Wiig hosted. Next week on the SNL stage: the return of Kanye West . Yeah, get excited. Read more articles like " Vampire Weekend's Triumphant Return to Saturday Night Live " on PMA - [...]

Jon Hopkins – “Open Eye Signal”

"Open Eye Signal" came to us immediately following our introduction to the AlunaGeorge remix of "The Socialites," and the songs are something of an ideal pairing. While the latter peels off the layers, this Jon Hopkins jam is perfect for staying on the highway that Amber Coffman and George Reid showed us the way to. Less metaphorically, it's a seven minute bit of throbbing house music that doesn't come so much in ebbs and flows as it does swells of ever-shifting layers of synth. [...]

Natasha Kozaily – “The Tiniest Elephant in the World”

The title of this song is, "The Tiniest Elephant in the World," and it was co-written by Dr. Suess. Google it. The piano and cuteness driven song will pick up your mood even if your heart is ten sizes too small. It's off Natasha Kozaily's to be self-released Serenading Renegades album, which is due out sometime this year. AlunaGeorge remix Dirty Projectors “The Socialites”

We were beginning to get upset over the lack of AlunaGeorge updates we've had in the two months since the duo released their video for "Attracting Flies," and while this is no new single from Body Music (supposedly due out in July), AlunaGeorge's remix of Dirty Projector's "The Socialites" is enough to keep us satisfied until they decide to share more on their debut. Review: Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires of the City

by ADAM OFFITZER “I’ve had dreams of Boston all of my life,” Ezra Koenig sang in “Ladies of Cambridge,” the B-side to Vampire Weekend’s first single in 2007. Six years later, he seems to be perfectly content with New York. Manhattan has dominated the press roll-out for  Modern Vampires of the City . The album cover makes it fairly clear what city these modern vampires roam in. The lyrics video for “Step” treats New York as the subject of a glamorous photo shoot, artfully capturing the urban beauty of the [...]

Review: MS MR – Secondhand Rapture

by JEAN-LUC MARSH Above all, MS MR has an affinity for the theatrical. They emerged anonymously in the summer heat last year and dropped the dangerously intoxicating “Hurricane,” followed by the eerie Candy Bar Creep Show EP in the fall. The cloak of anonymity fell away shortly afterwards to reveal the dual masterminds behind the project: Brooklynites Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow. If you feel a strange sensation of déjà vu while listening to Secondhand Rapture , it is probably because you have heard the majority of it before. [...]

Review: Mikal Cronin – MCII

by DENISE LU Earlier last week I randomly rediscovered Ty Segall's Twins , the third in his parade of full-lengths from last year. Coincidentally, MCII , the sophomore LP of Segall's buddy bandmate Mikal Cronin, was also released around that time. I'm sure Cronin has gotten has gotten tired of continuously being labeled as Segall's bandmate, but the connection really bleeds through and makes sense. Both are raw in their composition, honest with their words and generous with their enveloping layers. The trick here is that Cronin does an immense [...]

Katy B – “What Love Is Made Of”

If Katy B is to be believed, love is made of catchy-as-hell hooks and bouncy synths that make me want to dance like school just let out for summer break. You can stream some of this pop excellence below on a cloud of sound, but it's being released for real on June 8 via Columbia. Ms. B has a full length due out in the fall. Review: Chance The Rapper – Acid Rap

by NICK McGOURTY “Oh, Weezy?” my roommate inquired when I put on Chance the Rapper’s newest release Acid Rap. I told him this wasn’t the case, but I didn’t judge his hasty comparison; Chance comes in “yeah-ing” and “we back-ing” like it’s “Let The Beat Build” 2. As the mixtape slides on from the opener, it’s as if Chance realizes being pinned a neo-Lil Wayne isn’t the most astute of PR moves, and impresses with his own lyrically nimble and melodic flow. Acid Rap is a road trip mixtape. You’re [...]

Video: Lana Del Rey – “Young and Beautiful”

Lana Del Rey - Young and Beautiful
Take this from someone who just saw the movie - as you probably could have predicted,  Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" is probably one of the best things about Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of  The Great Gatsby . Now it's got a video of its own, and, wisely, director Chris Sweeney decided not to go with a cut of scenes from the film and instead do something decidedly more Lana - namely, found footage, face closeups, and eerie shadows. If only the actual film looked more like this... Check it out. [...]

Video: Foxygen – “No Destruction”

Foxygen - No Destruction
Foxygen's "No Destruction" is one of our favorite songs of the year, so we're glad it's now got the awesome video it deserves. Brilliantly, the band's close friend Bryan Felber decided to get nostalgic, putting together a kind of supercut of some of the homemade films he worked on in high school and college with the band members before they got together to form Foxygen , and stitching it together with some new footage too. The end product is as smart as it is surreal, just like the song itself. Check it out. [...]

Video: Mariah + Miguel – “#Beautiful”

Mariah Carey - #Beautiful ft. Miguel
It still reveals nothing about why they chose to hashtag the song's title, but the long three day-awaited video for  Mariah and Miguel's collaboration "#Beautiful" premiered yesterday on (the Mariah -judged) American Idol , and if you missed it, you can watch it now. Get ready for lots of motorcycles, cars, chandeliers in a barn (?), and leather. Check it out. Read more articles like " Video: Mariah + Miguel - "#Beautiful" " on PMA - Pretty Much Amazing .
