The mixtape will drop in a few weeks. Later on in 2012 we can expect K.R.I.T.'s major label debut, Live From The Underground . Continue reading: [...]
T.I.'s Trouble Man is due soon, and the man's fresh off the release of a free New Year's mixtape , but the Atlanta rapper penciled some time into his busy schedule to lend a hand to DJs MLK and Scream for a joint mixtape they're releasing in honor of this year's Super Bowl. You know about New Build , the brand new project of Hot Chip's Al Doyle and Felix Martin and their sometime producer Tom Hopkins – you've no doubt heard their collaborations with and remixes by Planningtorock , and you've likely heard some early singles too – and now you know about their upcoming debut record, Yesterday Was Lived and Lost , which'll drop April 3. You can check out what the band have in store with a four-track primer they recently released, which includes some new songs. Continue [...]
San Francisco producer Christopher Dexter Greenspan boiled his illustrious-sounding name down into the less Google-able signifier oOoOO to release his murky, hazy brand of rhythmic, tuneful witch house on an overlooked self-titled EP last year, but don't worry if you missed Greenspan and his percolating, underwater beats the first time around – he'll drop a second EP under that name in April, and you can stream its fantastic first single now. "NoWayBack" features the tender, hazed-out vocals of Butterclock buried deep underwater or obscured through opaque planes of darkness. We love how he amalgamates the deconstructed [...]
In a recent Young Turks takeover of Australia's FBi radio cast, Jamie xx premiered the latest incarnation of "Touch Me," a steel drum-led song we first heard about a year ago , but back then it featured vocals from one Yasmin . If you're anything like us, you're about ready for new Grizzly Bear material. Their last outing, Veckatimest , may have aged like the finest of wines, but we are still thrilled to hear Daniel Rossen's stunning voice in a new, Grizzly Bear -esque setting. The new "Silent Song," and last week's "Saint Nothing," are not from his band's next album (which is due out sometime in 2012), but from his forthcoming solo EP, Silent Hour / Golden Mile , which is slated for a March 20th release. You can [...]
For a series in which young bands cover Leonard Cohen classics, called Old Ideas With New Friends , New York duo Cults offer this sweet rendition of 19882s "Everybody Knows." More Leonard Cohen covers by some of your favorite bands are forthcoming, including ones by Deerhunter and Atlas Sound's Bradford Cox and New Pornographer's AC Newman. Last we checked in with Cults , they were working on a hip-hop remixtape, with the likes of Freddie Gibs and Lil B [...]
Evian Christ was perhaps the first big surprise of 2012. Early in the year, we were engaged by the anonymous producer's deft use of samples and his refreshing take on the bass music coming out of the UK right now. After all the press his YouTube channel earned him, EC has started a new label called TriAngle and has released an mixtape called King and Them , featuring high quality versions of the tracks he's already put up online. Like before, the highlights are the Tyga and Grouper -sampling "Thrown Like Jacks" and [...]
Breaking news of the day – Toro Y Moi's Chaz Bundick didn't always busy himself churning out that weird brand of electro-pop that lives where funk meets chillwave. In fact, as recently as June 2009, he was making scuzzy lo-fi guitar pop, and he'll soon be digging ten of those old recordings out of the garage for a release titled after the date of their creation. Our first taste of June 2009 is the complex, dizzying "Dead Pontoon," which sounds intermittently like earlier Cloud Nothings (vis a vis the scuzz), Dirty Projectors [...]
Brooklyn shoegaze mainstays A Place to Bury Strangers are gearing up for a busy 2012 – they have a new EP, Onwards to the Wall , and a long string of American tour dates all lined up already. You can stream that EP now via the Hype Machine – think My Bloody Valentine -esque waves of eardrum-splitting, decibel-meter-fracturing guitar scuzz and heavily processed vocals, but also think Radiohead's kraut-y, underwater-feeling bass drive, and you might be close. But whatever comparisons we make can't do justice to the EP's most beautiful, unique moments – the [...]
Fanfarlo are dropping Rooms Filled With Light soon and a whole bunch of teaser singles leading up to it, and we've been continually impressed by the sunny electro-pop direction they're taking. It makes sense, then, that the band recruited Brooklyn post-apocalyptic electro crew Yeasayer to remix their latest single "Shiny Things." Though they just dropped an album of their own , The Big Pink took some time out of their schedule to bring their talent for crafting expansive pop jams to a remix of Ladyhawke's recent jam-of-all-jams single "Black White and Blue." We like how the guys start the whole thing off in a minor key, breaking down Pip Brown's radio-ready vocals and grungy guitar backbeat into a goth-y, industrial, hyper-processed haze, before bringing out the big guns and busting out into a full-scale B*Witched / S Club 7 '90s fist-pumper. Ladyhawke's [...]
