It's been another busy spring of concert announcements coming from all angles. And spring is quickly turning into summer and those shows are more than announcements, they are happening, and soon. One of the next ones we are excited about is with Passion Pit and Cults. We are fans of both bands and think it's a killer bill for a show here in Cincinnati. However, when we saw it was booked at US Bank Arena, we had our doubts. After all, it seems like an awfully big space for those bands, even though they are on the rise. [...]

It's true. The band that most of us gave up on ever being able to see is back and touring. Neutral Milk Hotel, who need no introduction for independent music lovers, announced last week that they would be re-uniting and playing a handful of dates. I'll be honest, I didn't expect Cincinnati to be one of the cities that the band booked a show. But lo and behold, today it was officially announced that Neutral Milk Hotel will indeed play a show in the Cincinnati area at The Madison in Covington this October. [...]

Here is something that should make most of us feel really old. Hail To The Thief from Radiohead was released 10 years ago! The bright side of this realization is that the album is being celebrated, and the celebration is happening right here in Cincinnati. The Marburg Collective is a home-grown, communally driven record label, event-planning and media arts production center. Its infrastructural organization is fabricated by the carefully creative and craftful efforts of an interchanging core of artists, artisans and musicians. The Hail To The Thief tribute will be performed [...]

Get ready for another batch of Cheese Coney album reviews from John Crowell….. Yeah Yeah Yeahs Mosquito Interscope 2 out of 5 You can't fault the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for trying , I guess. They've followed up 20092s synth and dancefloor-leaning It's Blitz! with a record that similarly strains as reaches far away from their early 002s garage-rock sound. It's just that this time they didn't end [...]

It would be an understatement to say that I'm a big fan of These United States . Myself and my former mates at WOXY.com were one of the early supporters of their efforts about five years ago and I've done my best to tell you more about their albums, tours and adventures in the years since then. I even 'presented' a show featuring the guys back in 2008, show poster and all. Earlier this week I finally took the time to take in a documentary the band released recently, which was filmed [...]

Drunk Music Reviews is exactly what it sounds like: Caitlin Behle reviews shows while progressively getting drunker, while illustrator John Sebastian turns the drunken reviews, which could be ridiculous, sloppy or just plain insulting, into a comic. Part of the charm of SXSW is the people-watching. Austin's motto is "Keep Austin Weird" and they ain't shitting you. There are some lovely characters floating around, and like a kid in a candy shop, John wanted to draw all of them. As John put [...]

Drunk Music Reviews is exactly what it sounds like: Caitlin Behle reviews shows while progressively getting drunker, while illustrator John Sebastian turns the drunken reviews, which could be ridiculous, sloppy or just plain insulting, into a comic. DAY 3 March 16 As I'm writing this, it's become apparent that our true Drunk Music Reviews-styleSXSW coverage is pretty weak. We work best as a team, illustrating and reviewing shows together. But the truth is we went down there without a [...]

It was the closer on Saturday night that nearly brought a tear to my eye. The whole 'family' was on stage and they all sang together, along with the crowd as the night wrapped up. It's nights like this that keep me interested in this blog. It's nights like this that remind me why music is essential. It's nights like this that make me proud to be a part, albeit a small one, of the journey the MusicNOW Festival has taken in eight short years. As I walked away from Memorial Hall on Saturday night, and hummed the [...]

Drunk Music Reviews is exactly what it sounds like: Caitlin Behle reviews shows while progressively getting drunker, while illustrator John Sebastian turns the drunken reviews, which could be ridiculous, sloppy or just plain insulting, into a comic. Day 2 March 15 Our second day of SXSW was all about day parties. While John split off to check out, as he puts it, "sweaty, bearded metalheads" at the Brooklyn Vegan showcase, I headed to the Couch Sessions Showcase to see Erykah [...]

Drunk Music Reviews is exactly what it sounds like: Caitlin Behle reviews shows while progressively getting drunker, while illustrator John Sebastian turns the drunken reviews, which could be ridiculous, sloppy or just plain insulting, into a comic. Welcome to the Drunk Music Reviews SXSW Travelogue. We're almost a month overdue (whoops), but here it is, in all its ink-smudged, beer-splashed glory. Before SXSW, the farthest John and I had traveled together as Drunk Music Reviews was Lexington, Kentucky, so bear with us while we stumble [...]

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times, MusicNOW is about real, honest to goodness music discovery. The discovery is curated by Bryce Dessner, and in seven years of the festival, I can honestly say he has never let me down. It's a festival where you go not knowing much about some of the artists, who quickly become your new favorites. I'm betting that scenario might be the case when it comes to Buke and Gase . This duo consisting of Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez are just the type of MusicNOW [...]

Get ready for another batch of Cheese Coney album reviews from John Crowell…. Wavves Afraid of Heights Mom + Pop 3.5/5 It turns out the best medicine for this slapped-together stoner rock band was to stop for a minute and actually try. Produced by John Hill, whose resume includes the likes of Rhianna and Christina Aguilera, Afraid of Heights took over a year to record and had [...]

It's one of our favorite times of year, time for the MusicNOW festival ! It's tough to believe that it was eight years ago that I attended the very first MusicNOW festival. At the time I had no idea what I was in for in the years to come. Here is the first preview of the 2013 MusicNOW Festival. This year, one of our favorite Cincinnati venues is part of the MusicNOW festival. The Emery Theatre , currently being renovated and reclaimed by The Requiem Project will be hosting a weekend long art show featuring work [...]

At long last, Grey Host are releasing their debut full-length, Dawn of the Vultures . They’ve been recording this thing since we interviewed them last fall . The band has finally finished putting the finishing touches on their doom-sludge-metal masterpiece for your listening enjoyment/terror, and you should be pretty darn excited about that. You can go to their Bandcamp to see the various album/download packages available. But only by dragging yourself out of your dank basement, putting on your cleanest Sunn O))) t-shirt, and making your way to Mainstay Rock Bar can you [...]

SHADOWRAPTR , in all its genre-defying glory, releases their sophomore LP love a good mystery this Final Friday at MOTR. love a good mystery will be released a year and a half after the release of the band's debut LP It's Always Winter on the Moon , and in that time, the quartet has matured and focused as musicians. "We've been finding our sound more and more," guitarist Stephen Patota said in an interview with Each Note Secure. "We used to be all about changing as drastically as possible; kind of [...]

West Coast contributor Dave Tobias took in Django Django last weekend out in San Francisco and filed this report. Django Django played a sold out show at Public Works on Friday night, and rocked the house into oblivion. Entering the show, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Their underrated self-titled debut has a plethora of disparate influences, drawing comparisons to acts as divergent as the Shins, Yeasayer, Hot Chip, and the Stone Roses. While they have not garnered a lot of support State-side, they were nominated for the Mercury Prize in the UK, [...]

Get ready for another batch of Cheese Coney album reviews from John Crowell..... Marnie Stern The Chronicles of Marnia Kill Rock Stars 1/5 Marnie Stern makes guitar rock for people who don’t know anything about guitars and who don’t like rock music. I can’t really think of anything about her that doesn’t peel the skin from my teeth. She’s constantly referred to as a guitar [...]

Sadness. That's how I felt this morning when I heard that Jason Molina, an amazingly talented singer and songwriter had died. You might remember him from Songs:Ohia or Magnolia Electric Company . In more recent years Jason put a truly underrated album together with Will Johnson called Molina and Johnson. He has struggled with alcohol abuse for years and has been in and out of rehab. According to sources, he was most recently said to be in convalescence working on a farm in West Virginia. This [...]
